AAA Oklahoma City RedHawks: 6-5 win over Nashville (MIL)
-> Max Stassi: 2-for-3, RBI, 2 R
-> Austin Wates: 2-for-4, RBI, R, 2 SB
-> Jonathan Villar: 2-for-4, SB, R
-> Matthew Duffy: 1-for-4, RBI, R
-> Ronald Torreyes: 1-for-4, RBI
-> Joe Sclafani: 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI
-> Preston Tucker: 0-for-3, BB, R
SP Nicholas Tropeano: 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 K
RP Jorge De Leon: 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K
RP Anthony Bass: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K
RP Jason Stoffel: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K (win)
I'm not sure what to think about Nitro's future. I'm expecting regression, but it doesn't really come, and then he'll have a sort of rough outing like this one, and it's not because of BAbip regression, but homers. His peripherals remain strong, even when struggling. He's...hard to get a read on. At any rate, 2.64 ERA, 2.35 BB/9 and 8.51 K/9 in 92 innings of work this season.
Wates is hitting .316/.395/.447 with two doubles and a long ball during his last ten games. He's also kind of quietly accrued 30 steals in 34 tries in his 71 games. That was kind of a surprising number to me when I just now noticed it, I haven't been paying much attention to that aspect of his game in a while. You have to wonder when he'll get a shot, with someone, somewhere. If he's not protected, I can't fathom that all 29 teams would pass up a guy with his OBP, low strike out rate and big SB showing this year.
With the coming trade deadline hubbub and the questions on if we'll deal Tony Sipp or some other reliever, this might be a good time to point out that Jason Stoffel owns a 2.81 ERA, 4.38 BB/9 and 9.29 K/9 in 51.1 innings this year. If not for the 40-man roster crunch, he could have already had his first taste of the Majors.
AA Corpus Christi Hooks: 11-3 loss to Midland (OAK)
-> Brandon Meredith: 2-for-3, BB, 2B, solo HR
-> Tony Kemp: 2-for-5, solo HR
-> Delino DeShields: 1-for-2, BB, 2B
-> Telvin Nash: 1-for-2, BB, RBI
-> Ruben Sosa: 1-for-4, R
-> Andrew Aplin: 0-for-3, BB
SP Jordan Jankowski: 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K (loss)
RP Kyle Weiland: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K
RP Kyle Smith: 4.0 IP, 5 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K
Kemp has cooled off a bit, not unexpectedly; he's hitting just .256 in his last ten games, yet he still has a .370 OBP and .436 SLG during that run. He still has more walks that strike outs (17 to 16), just as he did down in Lancaster.
DeShields is beginning to put something together; he's hitting .258/.359/.484 during his last ten games. He has a hit in eight of the ten, and two doubles, a triple and a homer providing the juice to that SLG.
For those wondering, Appel's first start with Corpus is scheduled for Wednesday.
A+ Lancaster JetHawks: 8-3 win over Stockton (OAK)
-> Jack Mayfield: 2-for-2, BB, 3B, R
-> Chan Moon: 2-for-4, BB, 2B, 3 RBI
-> Austin Elkins: 1-for-2, BB, R
-> Danry Vasquez: 1-for-3, BB, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
-> Roberto Pena: 1-for-3, HR, RBI, R, 2 BB
-> Tyler White: 1-for-4, BB, HR, RBI, 2 R
-> Rio Ruiz: 1-for-4, BB, 2B, R
-> Teoscar Hernandez: 1-for-4, BB, SB
SP Kent Emanuel: 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K (win)
RP Daniel Minor: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K
Emanuel had been very mediocre, stats-wise, since being promoted, but he's strung together three really nice starts now; he owns a 1.13 ERA, 1.69 BB/9 and 9.56 K/9 in 16 outings during his last three games. Sure, this one was at Stockton, possibly the most reasonable park in the league, but that just means he wasn't having the location actively work against him like it does at Lancaster and some other places.
Likewise, it also makes Vasquez's homer more encouraging. There was just a 12 MPH wind blowing out to left, and Vasquez, a left-handed hitter, hit it to center. He's hitting .283/.347/.411 with 24 doubles, two triples, and now five homers on the year.
A- Quad Cities River Bandits: 9-2 win over Bowling Green (TBR)
-> J.D. Davis: 4-for-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R
-> Chase McDonald: 2-for-3, R, 2 BB, 2 2B
-> Brett Booth: 2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R
-> Ronnie Mitchell: 2-for-4, BB, RBI, R
-> Dayne Parker: 1-for-3, RBI, R
-> Brett Phillips: 1-for-4, BB, HR, R, 3 RBI
-> Brian Holberton: 1-for-5, 2 R
SP Edison Frias: 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 8 K (win)
RP Albert Minnis: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 5 K
The early returns for Davis in full season ball are very good; he's hit .333/.383/.452 with five doubles in his first 11 games. He does have just four walks and 12 strike outs, so he won't sustain this pace without some improvement there, but there's no reason to expect he won't. For all the worry about the legitimacy of his hit tool and contact ability pre-draft, he's looked fine so far, albeit slightly strike out prone at times.
McDonald's impressive run continues; he's hitting .353/.488/.794 with six doubles and three jacks in his last ten games. He has seven hits in his last five games. On the month, he has a 1.024 OPS and just 15 strike outs in 22 games, a notable improvement after whiffing 36 times in 31 games during May and June.
That's Phillips' second homer in as many days. He now has nine on the season, to go along with 19 doubles and 12 triples.
SS Tri-City ValleyCats: 7-5 loss to Aberdeen (BAL)
-> Derek Fisher: 4-for-5, SB, 4 R
-> Nick Tanielu: 3-for-4, 3 2B, 3 RBI
-> Jose Solano: 2-for-5, RBI
-> Juan Santana: 1-for-3, BB
-> Mott Hyde: 1-for-5, R
-> Ariel Ovando: 0-for-3, BB
SP Luis Ordosgoitti: 5.0 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K (loss)
RP Raul Rivera: 2.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K
RP Aaron Vaughn: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K
Shark Week has started early in Tri-City! Derek Fisher is laughing at the NYPL right now. Laughing. He's hitting .368/.473/.447 in 20 games. He hasn't even hit a homer yet and he's dang-near the league MVP. This is a crazy run. I keep trying to tell myself it's just one month and it's short season competition and all that, but hot dang.
Tanielu was the other big man tonight, and with Reed and Davis both having moved up to figuratively-greener fields, he has a chance to step in and help power this offense into the NYPL playoffs again. He's hitting .321/.368/.466 with nine doubles, two triples and two bombs in 35 games. He's driven in sixteen runs in his last ten games alone.
Troy Scribner, quickly becoming one of my favorite underdog prospects, goes tonight!
RK Greeneville Astros: 7-3 win over Bristol (PIT)
-> Cesar Carrasco: 3-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI
-> Hector Roa: 3-for-4, R
-> Bryan Muniz: 1-for-3, BB, solo HR
-> Jeffry Santos: 1-for-3, BB, RBI, R
-> Jacob Nottingham: 1-for-4, 2B, R
-> Antonio Nunez: 1-for-4, BB
-> Yonathan Mejia: 1-for-4, RBI
-> Luis Reynoso: 1-for-4, RBI
-> Ydarqui Marte: 1-for-4, R
SP Austin Nicely: 4.0 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 8 K
RP Aaron Greenwood: 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K (win)
RP Angel Heredia: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K (save)
Roa is fresh up from the Gulf Coast League, where he hit .280/.324/.500 in 26 games. The big slugging percentage came from 11 doubles, a triple and three long balls. Aside from that though, he didn't walk much and struck out a lot, but he's very young (won't be 20 until next March) and GCL stats can be extremely misleading, as prospects are often there to work on specific aspects of their games, which can skew statistical results.
Nicely has put together three straight very nic... uh, good starts; he's allowed seven runs, but just two earned, in 13 innings, while walking four and striking out ten, for a 1.39 ERA, 2.77 BB/9 and 6.92 K/9. The walk rate is most notable, as he had posted a 6.38 BB/9 during his first five outings.
