Red Sox 8, Astros 3: Boston bats beat up on Astros starter

Bob Levey

Chris Carters' multi-home run game is not enough to keep the Astros with striking distance of the win against the Red Sox.

The Astros fell behind the eight ball early as George Springer was a late starch. Springer was scratched for knee discomfort. The rookie outfielder has quickly become the offensive and  general positive vide spark for this team. Any time he is out of the lineup there is a clear lack of life in the Astros side.

That said it didn't help that Red Sox pitcher John Lackey was on his game for the most part last night. He held the Astros to two runs on four hits over six innings. The Astros weren't able to capitalize enough on walks from Lackey, he had five in the six innings he pitched.  The Astros did put one run across after Lackey walked Robbie Grossman and Jon Singleton, Enrique Hernandez drove home Singleton with a single.

Chris Carter added another run against Lackey with the first of his two home runs of the night in the sixth.

The night wouldn't be so clean for Scott Feldman, the Red Sox jumped on him in the third with back-to-back extra-base hits from Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia to plate two. Stephen Drew tripled in the fourth and was driven in by freshly-called up Christian Vazquez.

Vazquez would strike again in the sixth as the Astros intentional walked Drew to face Vazquez with the bases loaded. Vazquez was already two-for-two (and 2-for-5 in his young season) in the game and Drew was batting below .150 for the season. Vazquez would double to score two more runs. David Ortiz would come the plate with the base loaded again in the sixth, now with Darin Downs pitching. Ortiz muscled a double to clear the bases and put the Sox up 8-2.

Chris Carter would another home run in the bottom of the sixth, but it would be too late. Worth noting, David Martinez pitched three scoreless innings in relief as the offensive failed to muster any more runs Friday.

Brett Oberholtzer steps in for Collin McHugh who has a blister on his pitching hand. Obie will face Jack Peavy at 3:10 pm CT.
