Mariners 9, Astros 8: Astros Find New Way to Lose

Look at Trogdor fly - Bob Levey

The Astros find a new way to lose against the Mariners.

At the moment, I can not divorce myself the Rockets' devastating loss to end their season. As such, the Mariners somehow played a hand in the tragic defeat as the closest baseball team to Portland. Today's 9-8 loss by the Astros was just another dagger from the Pacific Northwest.

If I you told you the Astros would score eight runs and had Dallas Keuchel on the mound - you would probably guess the Astros were in good shape, right? An eight-run seventh inning by Seattle may have changed your mind. The score was 2-1 Astros with the Mariners went to bat in the top of the seventh inning. Keuchel was relieved after walking three straight batters by Jose Cisnero. Cisnero walked the next batter he faced to tie the game, then the floodgates opened. Michael Saunders hit a double, Stefen Romero and Robinson Cano singled, and Kyle Seager added another double. The cherry on top? Justin Smoak hit a two-run home run off Raul Valdes, the third Astros pitcher in the inning. When the dust settled the M's had a 8-2 lead with nine offensive outs to go for the Astros.

In the past, the Astros would appear to pack it in down six runs. Be it because of lack of talent or will, the Astros were staring up at a climb of Mount Everest-like proportions. That wasn't the case today. The Astros chipped away at the M's lead, Chris Carter burninated a 1-1 curveball over the left field wall. Jonathan Villar added a two-run homer, and Jose Altuve scored on a throwing error.

The score was 9-6 heading to the eighth. Trogdor struck again, hitting a triple to score Matt Dominguez. Alex Presley drove in Chris Carter with a single. That was the end of the Astros scoring efforts, and it was the end of Houston's chances to win.

  • Astros were 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position
  • Josh Fields and Jerome WIlliams pitched two scoreless inning to close out the game for Houston.
The Astros continue Houston's quest for revenge on the Pacific Northwest tomorrow at 1:05 PM - Brandon Maurer (0,0) vs. Collin McHugh (2,0).
