Daily Boil: Opening Day Stories and Reactions

Bob Levey

Social media and national writers react to Astros' Opening Day win over the Yankees.

The story of the 2014 Astros has just begun, but I will have at least one game to replay in my head over and over again if the season is anything like 2013. The good old times were back if for just one day. There were of chants of "Let's Go Astros" throughout the game, the walkways were filled with wall to wall orange and blue (okay, some of that was Yankee blue too), and the roar of the crowd returned.

I'm not sure if it was a result of the stadium being open, the percentage of Yankees fans at the game, or some other foreseeable force but Astros fans seem to be going through rehabilitation during the game. Last year ended on a 15-game losing streak, and it sucked the life out of even the most diehard fan. The crowd seems rejuvenate with each passing inning - "they have lead", "the pitcher is holding up", "they haven't run into each other", "the bullpen didn't explode". It was safe to enjoy the game, the Astros played a complete game - completed not the concept of recording 54 outs but they played a game without error. This all culminated with the Astros first win of 2014, and Astros fans explode with emotion.

Let's take a look around the league at the reaction to the win.

Richard Justice is one of the many faces that has left the Bayou City for the national stage over the years. Of course it's always nice when he talks about the Astros theses days.

Richard Justice: With Opening Day victory, high-energy Astros offer glimpse of future | MLB.com: News
Someday, these kinds of games will be the norm for the Astros, so maybe a night like Tuesday is a good practice run for the sunny days ahead. It felt a lot like old times at Minute Maid Park as the Astros opened the 2014 season by doing virtually everything right in beating the Yankees, 6-2, in front of a big, noisy crowd of 42,117.

The Houston Astros are kind of like some small band you’ve never heard of that a guy praises while ripping Springsteen.

On Derek Jeter’s last Opening Day, Yankees fall to Astros and Captain hit by pitch - NY Daily News
At least Derek Jeter never has to experience one of CC Sabathia’s Opening Day starts again. Sabathia continued his trend of sloppy season debuts, getting rocked in the first two innings as the Astros cruised to a 6-2 win over the Yankees to kick off the Captain’s final season.

Houston's new additions sure made this team look better than last year's Astros in the season opener.

New York Yankees captain will be Derek Jeter of old, not old Derek Jeter - ESPN New York
Derek Jeter will be the Jeter of old, not the old Jeter in farewell season.
