That game (April 19th) basically sums up the Astros in 2014. There's never a safe lead because Porter refuses to name a closer. But, in his defense, he refuses to name a closer because he doesn't have one. He has a bunch of set up men being forced into a role they are not meant to have. They can't add onto leads because most of the players (Chris Carter leading the way) couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. The Fowler, Albers and Qualls signings smell of the same trash we were handed by Drayton McLane in his last three years. They are dragging their feet on bringing up better players because they are cheap. If winning mattered more holding off free agency one more year wouldn't matter. They are still a team loaded with "potential" players, not MAJOR LEAGUE quality players. Castro and....uh......uh.....let me think....OH YEAH...MAYBE Springer (once we see a little more) are the only players who would start on most if not every other team in baseball. And the fans deserve better!
As far as the argument of, "Why aren't they spending money?" Goes, that is insanity. We saw an attempt when they offered a big contract to Shin Soo Choo and were turned down. Why? Because we were outbid? Yeah, that is what Luhnow wants you to believe. The reality is no one of real quality WANTS to play on this disaster! To get top free agents to come here Luhnow/Crane will have to over pay significantly to get anyone to come here. Case in point, Feldman. Do you really think he's worth 30+mil? Heck no, but to get him they over paid. But that is Luhnow and Cranes fault because they traded away TOO MANY veterans to get TOO MANY minor league players. Minor leaguers are great if they are able to become major leaguers. Our's don't appear to have that ability. We have too many players now that are too far away and Luhnow is killing a fan base.
If a group was trying to build disinterest so that they could move a team, they couldn't do a better job than what Luhnow and Crane are doing right now.
