I've been looking at the draft lately and it is loaded with leftys at the top. Of course everybody knows about Carlos Rodon who was thought to be a lock with the number one pick until recently. Rodon might turn out to still be the number one pick, but HS lefty Brady Aiken has been rising fast. A White Sox scout said "whats not to like" when talking about Aiken this week. I did a little research on Aiken. He is 6-4 and 205 lbs. He has a very good work ethic and good mechanics. He has a good fastball and a very good breaking ball. Like the scout said whats not to like? I believe the scouts on this one.
Another lefty I like is Mat Imhof of Cal Poly. Imhof is listed at 6-5 and 220 lbs. I'm no expert, but his mechanics look good to me. This guy leads the nation in strike outs. He pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout on Friday night against UC Davis. He had 13Ks and 0BB. That is pretty dog gone impressive. Imhof now has 77Ks in 51.2 innings.
A third lefty that I have my eye on is Mac Marshall, a Georgia high school kid. Maybe he will be on the board at 37 or 42. He might not be, but there is a chance because it is a deep draft. Jonathan Mayo was impressed with Marshall this week. He said that some have him as a 1st rounder and some scouts have him as a 2nd rounder which gives me some hope that he could possibly be on the board at 37 or 42. Marshall is listed at 6-2 and 185 lbs.
Imhoff may have pitched his way out of the Astros reach at 37, but I'll hope that some how he is there.
My picks today:
1. Brady Aiken
37. Matt Imhof
42. Mac Marshall
There is still a long way to go. Rodon may be the top choice when it is all said and done, but it isn't the slam dunk that it once was. There are also some other leftys that should go very high. Guys like Sean Newcomb, Brandon Finnegan, Kodi Medeiros.
I don't know what the Astros will do come draft day, but it does look like they will get some left handed pitching help. This draft is loaded with leftys and that is something that they could use. They could very well get 2 or 3 leftys with their 1st 3 picks.
