Houston Astros' 2014 Unofficial Opening Day Lineup

Hello Crawfish Boxes and Astros fans! I am a first time writer to the site and have been reading since about March of 2013. I wanted to discuss and get your opinions of what next year's opening day lineup is going to look like, what you think it should be, or what it will be. I'll throw in my 2 cents and I'll go by position #. As follows:

Numero uno: I think the Astros FO should go after a free agent to be the opening day pitcher next year (also get about 5 free agents for bullpen help LOL). But if they elect not to do that I think Jared Cosart and Brett O. should compete it out in ST for the nod. Cosart arguably has the best stuff, but has to get his walks under control and find a consistent release point. Obie has definitely been a pleasant surprise this year though. Although, I think Porter will give Lyles the opening day start because he is a "veteran" and will take the pressure off the younger guys in the rotation. I am not too high on Lyles. His ERA is right around where I expected it to be this season as of now, around 5.00. He did start off the year good, but I think he is a career 4.50 + ERA guy. He doesn't show much promise to me even though he is young.

Next, at position "C", we'll obviously see Castro the Astro. He's having a great year with a high average and has the most HR's by an Astro catcher in a single season. I would be happy if he was consistent with what he is doing this year, next year.

At first base, I would like to see Singleton start the year at the MLB level but I dont think he's ready, unless he can tear the cover off the ball in ST. I think he should play in the AFL to get some more seasoning but that's not going to happen. He should start the year at AAA to find some quality consistency with the bat at that high level. In my opinion, he can already outplay Wallace at the MLB level. I think Wallace is at the end of his leash. He hasn't proved much at the MLB level and with over 900 AB's he's had plenty of time to be evaluated. So next in line is Carter. In my eyes, he's the starting 1B at the beginning of the year next year. It pains me to say that he may be in the lineup. I don't think his power threat is worth his high K's and low average. He does walk at a high clip, but that is not enough. Come on Singleton, win that spot!

Altuve is definitely the guy at the 2 bag. He's finishing the year strong and i'm glad he's locked in that position for years to come. But please learn how to walk a little more.

Dominiguez is the guy at the 3 bag next year. He will end the year with 20 + HR's and 80+ RBI's. Although his glove is talked about being GG caliber, we're only seeing it in spurts this year. He can do better. I believe if he can get his AVG up to a consistent .260 he will be in the lineup for years to come (although he is still young and will progress).

Villar is my guy at SS. The errors are a extreme worry and needs to polish up in the offseason, but he's shown a consistent bat this year hitting around .280 at AAA and with the big league club. He also makes things happen on the base paths. Exciting player to watch!

LF belongs to Grossman to start the year. I think he has played well enough, before he got injured, to earn a spot at least to start off the year next year in LF. He has a solid average hovering around .270 and can take a walk every now and then.

CF=Springer!!! We are all very excited to see him in an Astros uniform this year and look for more of the same in the majors as the minors. No pressure, just do what you do. I think we will see him in an All-Star Jersey more times than not. I also see a 40/40 year in his career once or twice. Let's hope the K's can stay at around a 25% clip, and his walks stay AWESOME, and his BABIP % is solid. He's a remarkable player!

RF and LF has possibly many suitors. Right now I feel like RF should go to Hoes because of his ability to hit in the high two's. Although, it's tough because Mr. Barnes is so good, actually GREAT at D. We need to see more consistency from Hoes and his bat to make him stick. So far so good. I feel like their will be a healthy debate who plays in the corner spots in the outfield. I think it could go to Hoes or Barnes at this point, but I think Hoes has the edge and Barnesy will be the 4th OFer.

DH could go many ways! I would personally like to see our new acquistion from Mexico give it a whirl. That's right, Japhet Amador. He hit well in the Mexican League and his short stint in AAA, OKC. Although in about 50 AB's in AAA he had no walks, which scares me! I believe Porter will let the DH be a tossup between Japhet, Wallace, and Carter. I vote Japhet.

What the lineup will be (guessing what Porter will do):

1. Villar SS

2. Altuve 2B

3. Springer CF

4. Castro C

5. Carter DH

6. Wallace 1B

7. Dominguez 3B

8. Hoes RF

9. Grossman LF

SP: Lyles

My wish list:

1. Villar SS

2. Altuve 2B

3. Springer CF

4. Castro C

5. Amador DH

6. Singleton 1B

7. Hoes RF

8. Dominguez 3B

9. Grossman LF

SP: Cosart

Let the debate begin! God Bless
