Astros Minor League Recap: August 26, 2013

A prospect is taking over twitter and a lefty throws a shutout.

Lancaster Twitter Takeover

No, this isn't an Anthony minor league recap, but there is some house cleaning to do.

"House Keeping! Want me to fluff your pillow?"

Lancaster does this from time to time, and I feel like it's been a long time since they've done it, but they are handing over the reins of their @JetHawks twitter account to a prospect. It's free range and you can ask the prospect your questions and more than likely get them answered right there on twitter. It will start at 3 PM CST, and last for about an hour.

This time it's Delino DeShields! And I love how they announced it!

Pitching Prospects Shut Down

We knew that Mark Appel made his last start of the season on Sunday and Jordan speculated late last week that Lance McCullers had too when he was placed on the temporary inactive list for Quad Cities. But, Brian McTaggart confirmed both of those last night and even dropped another one on us. Andrew Thurman was also shut down. But, I want to highlight a quote from it that came from Jeff Luhnow.

"I didn't get a chance to see any of his starts, but they said the last two starts he was getting stronger and stronger and his velocity was getting into the mid-90s, and he was showing really exceptional fastball command," Luhnow said. "They were saying they can't wait to see what he shows up in Spring Training looking like. He made real good progress this summer."

OkC Rallies Late But Falls Short 6-3

Ross Seaton inflated his ERA more and now sits at 8.16 in AAA. But, the offense put together some hits. Ten to be exact. This Japhet Amador guy seems to be able to hit. Sample size thrown out the window. There were question marks about his hitting ability to translate given the the holes in his swing. Well, it's working out so far. Obviously we'll need to see more as teams start to get more scouting reports on him and understand his weaknesses.

  • Ross Seaton-4 1/3 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 2 HBP, 5/4 GO/AO, 86/53 P/S
  • Rhiner Cruz-1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO
  • Pat Urckfitz-2 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 3/1 GO/AO
  • Hector Ambriz-1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO
  • Trevor Crowe LF-0-5, 3 SO
  • Jose Martinez 2B-2-5, 2B
  • George Springer CF-2-4, BB, 2 SO, SB
  • Brandon Laird 3B-0-4, 3 SO
  • Japhet Amador DH-2-5, SO
  • Jonathan Singleton 1B-2-3, 2 BB
  • Marc Krauss RF-1-3, 2 BB
  • Carlos Perez C-1-4, 2B, 2 SO

Luis Cruz DOMINATES in 5-0 Win

Just dominated. A two-hit, complete game shutout is no joke. Yes, that is a quality start. Yes, that is an incredible Game Score of 96! Yessir! We rudely left him out of our top lefty's in the system in the podcast before last and Mike Fast called us out for it. Apparently, we offended him too. He wants us to know that he's legit. And he proved it in just 109 pitches.

In other news, Leonardo Heras hit his first home run in affiliated ball.

  • Luis Cruz-9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 14 SO, 5/5 GO/AO, 109/79 P/S
  • Leonardo Heras LF-3-5, 2B, HR, SO

  • Erik Castro 1B-2-4, 2 2B, 2 SO
  • Drew Muren CF-1-4, 2B, SO
  • Matt Duffy DH-2-4

Lancaster Drop Game 4-1

VV sat 'em down but he also walked them and let get hits. It just wasn't a great night for him. Man, I love how he can strike them out though.

  • Vincent Velasquez-5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR, 2/2 GO/AO
  • Tyson Perez-3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 5/3 GO/AO
  • Jordan Jankowski-1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO
  • Carlos Perdomo SS-3-3, BB
  • Chris Epps RF-1-3, 2B, BB, 2 SO

QC Falls 3-2 in the 10th Inning

When we talk about evaluating prospects, Tim always likes to look for trends. Well, here is a trend that I think Tim will enjoy.

April OPS: .597

May OPS: .640

June OPS: .739

July OPS: .824

August OPS: .839

If you guessed that trend belonged to Rio Ruiz, you are correct. It was an aggressive assignment early on for Rio, but he slowly has risen to the challenge.

  • Josh Hader-6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 SO, 9/0 GO/AO-WOW
  • Zach Morton-3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 6/1 GO/AO
  • Patrick Christensen-2/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO
  • Teoscar Hernandez CF-1-4, 2B
  • Bobby Borchering 1B-0-4, 4 SO
  • Rio Ruiz 3B-2-4, 2B, SO, SB
  • Austin Elkins 2B-1-3, 2B, BB, CS, PO

Adrian Houser Has a Rough Night in 8-1 Loss

It wasn't all his fault, but a lot does fall on his shoulders. He lasted just one out into the second inning, but those four outs were enough time to surrender six runs (three earned). He just didn't have it. He pegged two hitters and allowed eight total baserunners. Just not a good night. But don't let that overshadow a pretty season so far. He still boasts a sub-3.00 ERA.

  • Adrian Houser-1 1/3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2/1 GO/AO
  • Randall Fant-5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 4/3 GO/AO
  • Charles Basford-2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO
  • Zachary Dando-1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3/0 GO/AO
  • No notable hitting performances

Phillips Returns From DL With a Good Game

Brett Phillips came off the DL from a hand (?) injury and while he didn't score a run or hit an RBI, he had a good game at the plate. A double and two walks is a good day, if you disagree with that, I'll punch you in the face. Not really...or am I joking. I don't know.

  • Frederick Tiburcio-5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 7/3 GO/AO
  • Austin Chrismon-3 1/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 5/1 GO/AO
  • Tanner Mathis LF-2-4
  • Brett Phillips CF-1-2, 2B, 2 BB
  • Brian Holberton C-1-5, 2B, SO
  • Angel Ibanez 3B-0-4, 3 SO
  • Marc Wik RF-0-2, 2 BB
  • Thomas LIndauer SS-2-3, BB, CS

GCL CRUSHED 9-1

Ouch....

  • Joe Musgrove-6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 6/6 GO/AO
  • Juan Santos-0 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2/0 GO/AO
  • Robert Corniel-1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO
  • Jorge Perez-1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO
  • Yonathan Mejia 1B-2-4, 2B
  • Jacob Nottingham C-1-4, 2B, SO
