Astros roster moves: Jarred Cosart to make major league debut Friday

Al Messerschmidt

Following Wednesday's loss to St. Louis, the Astros announced Cosart will be called up to start against the Rays Friday.

Well, then.

The Astros made a pretty significant roster move shortly after losing 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday night. Heralded prospect Jarred Cosart was called up to make Friday's start against Tampa Bay, with Jimmy Paredes sent back to Oklahoma City.

Cosart was acquired as one of the pieces from Philadelphia coming to Houston in the Hunter Pence deal. He is one of the most advanced pitching prospects in the system and made a significant step forward this season in his results at Triple-A. In the past, Cosart had a label of "great stuff, no results," with a good fastball and solid secondary offerings.

In Oklahoma City this season, he's put both of those things together, Cosart struck out 93 batters in 93 innings while walking 50. That 9.0 K/9 rate is easily his minor league best, though his walk rate has stayed high. In Cosart's favor is his stuff, where he mixes a good fastball with a great ground ball rate. Typically pitchers who can strike out a batter per inning and also generate 50 percent or better in ground balls can be pretty successful in the show.

Houston has not announced any starters for this weekend's series with the Rays, but will also need to fill Lucas Harrell's rotation spot sometime after the All-Star Break. Will Cosart be the guy to fill it?

What do you think? Are you happy Cosart is finally getting a call up to the show? What do you expect to see out of the young fireballer?
