The Astros are expected to sign one of the following: Mark Appel, Kris Bryant, Jonathan Gray, Colin Moran, or Clint Frazier (I'd rank them in that order of likelihood).
Are there any dark-horse candidates who could slip in at the last minute?
Carlos Correa wasn't that unexpected as a 1-1 pick last year, with several publications putting him at or near the top of their prospect lists in the week leading up to the draft.
But could there be a surprise waiting in the wings this year?
Kohl Stewart? He's a local guy with a high upside and good athleticism. See illinibob's case for him at 1-1 on this site. I'd put the chances at about 5-10%.
Austin Meadows? Would the possibility of him sticking at CF entice the Astros to take a flyer on him? He has about a 5% chance, I'd say.
Reese McGuire? Now that would be a real surprise, though he does play a premium position (catcher) and is considered promising on both offense and defense. Still, there would be a less than 1% chance of this happening. A high school catcher is just too big of a risk at 1-1. The only reason we would look in this direction would be to go way under slot, to save money for future rounds.
Anyone else we should keep an eye on?
