Trevor Crowe To The Disabled List; Marc Krauss Called Up

Scott Halleran

Astros outfielder Trever Crowe expected to be on the disabled list for 3-6 weeks after running into the right field wall. Marc Krauss has been called up to replace Crowe in the outfield.

Trevor Crowe is being placed on the disabled list and Marc Krauss is on his way to Houston, according to Mark Berman of Fox 26:

Crowe fought the wall in right field and the wall won. He's being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained the AC join in his right shoulder. Prior to his injury he had a .194 batting average, a .280 on-base percentage and a .269 slugging percentage. He's expected to be out 3-4 weeks and possibly 4-6 weeks as a worst case scenario, according to Brooks.

This gives left-handed hitting outfielder-first basemen Marc Krauss, 25, an opportunity to show case his skills in Houston for the time being. At Class AAA Oklahoma City, Krauss has a .277 batting average, a .393 on-base percentage and a .488 slugging percentage. He has nine home runs and almost as many walks as strikeouts (43 walks, 45 strikeouts).

With Chris Carter and Carlos Pena entrenched at first base and designated hitter, I expect Krauss to see a majority of his time in either left field or right field, where the only sure thing is Brandon Barnes. Both Justin Maxwell and JD Martinez have weighted on base averages (wOBA) below .300 and could possibly be replaced if Krauss shows he can hit major league pitching.

A spot on the 40-man roster will need to be made for Marc Krauss to be called up. Brandon Laird and Ross Seaton are two possibilities. Laird has a .316 wOBA for the RedHawks this year and with Jon Singleton now in Oklahoma City Laird's figures to see his name on the lineup card less. Ross Seaton has a 8.18 ERA between the Astros Class AAA and AA clubs.

UPDATE:

Ross Seaton was designated for assignment, according to Brian T. Smith:
