Astros 7, Rangers 12; Done With Doug Brocail

USA TODAY Sports

Astros pitching continued to struggle while the offense attempted to make the Astros look competitive.

During the game yesterday I sent a text to David saying I was done with the Astros pitching coach Doug Brocial. A debate was started in the gamethread regard Brocail and the job he's done to this point in his tenure with the Astros. Shortly after the game another TCB writer sent out an email to all the writers expressing a similar sentiment. I know it's not fair to blame the pitching coach for the talent of the pitching and it's hard to quantify the affect a pitching coach can have on a pitching staff but it's pretty clear to me that Brocail is not helping the pitching staff. I'm not alone in these thoughts.

After two solid starts Jordan Lyles struggled against the high-powered Rangers offense allowing eight runs in four innings, seven of which came in the last two innings. Edgar Gonzalez, Philip Humber's replacement, relieved Lyles and allowed four runs in in four innings. Gonzalez has allowed 11 earned runs in 12 innings, Between the Blue Jays and Astros, this season. He allowed all four runs in the fifth inning. Jose Veras pitched a perfect ninth.

Offensively, the Astros were held to one run, a Jason Castro homerun in the fourth, through seven innings. Chris Carter and Brandon Barnes both provided the Astros with homeruns late in the game to help the team save face. Barnes also made a fantastic catch in the eighth inning. Castro was the only Astros batter with multiple hits and Carlos Pena and Carter were the only batters to reach base multiple times.

The Astros travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers for a 6:08 p.m. CT start time. Bud Norris takes the mound for the Astros and Anibal Sanchez, who has pitched well this season, takes the mound for the Tigers. This will be an interesting start for Norris as he's pitched well in his last two starts.
