Minor League Recap: April 7th, 2013

Bob Levey

In today's edition: Carlos Correa stars in an 11-inning win for Quad Cities, two big power bats go deep in Corpus Christi, and Asher Wojciechowski dominates.

Just as the Astros' big league club continues to whiff away their chances at wins, the talent that Luhnow and Co. have brought into the organization has given Astros fans new reasons for hope every night. Whether it has been tandem rotations blanking opponents or their young bats putting balls in the seats, the first three days of the season have been very promising for the Houston farm- and Saturday may have been the best yet.

Wunderkind Correa notches combo meal, 8 total bases

After opening the year with a 2-hit performance, Carlos Correa announced his arrival in full season ball with a full scale coming out party in the Midwest League yesterday. Hitting behind Teoscar Hernandez, who registered three singles, Correa registered both his first home run and first stolen base in full season ball. He rounded out his line with a double and two singles, finishing the evening 4 for 7 with one strikeout.

DeShields, Jr. hits the ground running

After breaking the century mark in stolen bases in 2012, Delino DeShields, Jr. shot up prospect lists, even if he remained in the shadow of Billy Hamilton. After not attempting any swipes in his first two games, Lancaster's leadoff hitter made up for lost time by going 3 for 5 at the plate and 3 for 4 on the basepaths, giving him a line of 6 for 15 with a double, a triple and three steals in the early going.

Wojciechoski, long balls lead Hooks to series win

Taking the mound as the front end of a tandem on Saturday night, ex-sandwich round pick Asher Wojciechowski relentlessly mowed down Springfield hitters, allowing just one hit and one walk in his five innings, which resulted in no runs. Wojo racked up seven strikeouts and got the win, backed by Domingo Santana's first home run of of the year and #2 for George Springer.

RedHawks take opening series with nondescript victory

Coming into last night 1-1 on the young season, the RedHawks handed the ball to Jarred Cosart as they went into their rubber game against Memphis. Cosart, though he only threw four innings, got his season started off on the right foot, recording five strikeouts against two walks and three hits and one run before letting Josh Zeid and John Ely combine to throw five clean innings as the 'Hawks won 3-1. Jimmy Paredes and Trevor Crowe had your multi-hit games for OKC.
