It's no secret that the Astros are a rebuilding team and probably won't do very great this year. It's also no secret that the media has absolutely blown this team out of proportion and has made them the butt of countless jokes. Thanks to that, we are now looked at as a joke. I don't know how many of you go through the same thing, but I live in Chicago and all that I hear all day is the constant bashing of the Astros. Every single day, my phone is blowing up with how they should be a Single A team. Most of it is directed for me to see, to make me feel stupid for being a diehard Astros fan. It's not just once in awhile, not just every week, not just every day, its multiple times every day that jokes get thrown at me. (sorry this is turning into a rant)... I'm a high school senior, a week ago I walk across the classroom wearing my Lucas Harrell shirt, a kid points up at me and says "I don't even watch baseball but I know they suck, they're never going to win". All I said back was "you don't know anything about baseball" and walked away. Monday, the day after they win on opening night, someone comes up to me and says "guess who won last night but is still going to only win 45 games this year!?". Last night, starting around the 7th or 8th inning, my phone was blowing up with people joking about how the 'Stros are a joke. Today, I heard nothing but comments about getting owned last night. Many people I know seriously believe that the Astros won't be relevant in baseball for at least 8 years, I've even heard one person say 20 years. I'm in a group chat on my phone for my fantasy baseball league.. every single day it's just constant bashing how much the Astros suck. "My dog could make the Astros and be their shortstop", "Adam Dunn is going to hit more home runs than the Astros will win games this year", "Their best player is the size of a 5th grader", "this team is f***ing pathetic, my 10 year old baseball team could beat them"...... It goes on for awhile.
To be 100% honest I really don't care about the actual comments. I don't care what people say. It's the fact that it's constantly used to make fun of us Astros fans for liking a team that is going through the biggest rebuild project in MLB history. After all, do we make the decisions for the team? No. We're just heavily loyal fans.
I'm going to start referring to Bo Porter.. His slogans don't only apply to the team itself, but the fans as well.
When we finally are back in contention and fighting for a World Series, it'll be well worth it. I do believe it is sooner than most people think. Luhnow knows exactly what he is doing. Watching that final out in the ninth inning to secure a World Series for Houston will bring tears to my eyes. I will scream and fall to my knees in awe. It'll all be worth it then. We will all look back at this and be able to say that you believed and you were a real fan. That's what baseball is about.
But until then, ignore the noise.
