TCB Weekly College Prospect Update

Matt Ryerson-US PRESSWIRE

With another Another exciting weekend in college baseball is over, TCB is here to bring you the results of the top draft-eligible prospects from around the nation.

The showdown between two of the top college lefties - Indiana State's Sean Manaea and Minnesota's Tom Windle - didn't disappoint. Both pitchers went the distance, with Indiana State squeaking out a 2-1 victory after the Gophers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, with Kurt Schlangen getting thrown out on a very close play at home after trying to score on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Arkansas' Ryne Stanek was relieved of his Friday night starting duties in favor of freshman Trey Killian, but the move to Sundays didn't help Stanek very much, as he only made it 4.2 innings against Ole Miss, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

TCB Prospect of the Week

Beginning this week, TCB is going to start announcing a Draft-Eligible Prospect of the Week - but we need your help! Our minor league staff has identified eight candidates - four hitters and four pitchers - for the award, and we're opening those choices up to fan voting to determine which candidate walks away with the honor. It's completely up to you to decide how you want to vote - if you're a fan of the strikeout artists, the long ball, the better overall prospects, your alma mater - however you want to decide!

Now, about those candidates...

Kris Bryant's (OF/3B/1B, San Diego, Jr.) week may not look impressive on paper - 2-for-9 with a home run, three runs, and 2 RBI - until you realize that the home run was a two-run walkoff shot in the 14th inning against BYU. It sealed the sweep for the Toreros, two days after Bryant opened the series by hitting three home runs, including another walk-off.

Tyler Horan (OF, Virginia Tech, Jr.) helped the Hokies sweep Duke by going 7-for-15 with a double, two triples, and a home run.

Brandon Thomas (OF, Georgia Tech, Sr.) looked incredible in the Jackets' conference opener against Boston College, going 8-for-14 with a double, triple, home run, and a stolen base for good measure. Thomas is hitting .479/.557/.658 on the week.

D.J. Peterson (3B/1B, New Mexico, Jr.) may be playing in a hitters' park in a small conference, but he continues to come up huge for the Lobos, going 4-for-13 with two huge home runs, 3 runs, and a whopping 8 RBI.

Sean Manaea (LHP, Indiana State, Jr.) was a little rusty after not having pitched since late February, but he led ISU to a win over Tom Windle and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, pitching 9 innings and allowing 6 hits, 1 run (unearned), 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts.

Jonathan Gray (RHP, Oklahoma, Jr.) pitched a complete-game shutout against Northwestern State, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out 12. On the season, Gray is now 4-1/1.51 with 39 K and 8 BB over 36 innings.

Not to be outdone, Jason Hursh (RHP, Oklahoma State, Jr.) pitched his own complete game shutout against Iona, striking out 10 and walking none, with 4 hits allowed in the 9-0 win.

Ben Lively (RHP, Central Florida, Jr.) tied his career high 11 strikeouts against Columbia Friday night, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, and 1 earned run.

So now we turn to you to help us decide: Who will be the first-ever TCB College Player of the Week?
