Baseball America's Top 100 List Released: Five Astros Prospects Make The Grade

Troy Taormina-US PRESSWIRE

The Astros have placed an improbable five players on the Baseball America Top 100 Prospects list which was released on Tuesday.

It's not prospect season without a ton of Top 100 lists. The granddaddy of them all may just be the Baseball America list for a lot of reasons. It's not the end-all, be-all, but it is a winter event when it's released, which happened Tuesday.

Surprisingly, the Astros landed five different players on the list. Here they are, complete with their ranking:

13. Carlos Correa

27. Jonathan Singleton

37. George Springer

50. Lance McCullers

99. Delino DeShields, Jr.

Subber10 has already weighed in on this, thinking that Correa is ranked too highly and that DDJ is ranked too low. Unlike some lists, Correa was ranked only behind Byron Buxton as 2013 draftees. If you remember, Keith Law had three different 2013 draft picks ahead of Correa.

It's also not surprising that the players were rated where they were. Correa is very toolsy, which Baseball America and it's network of scouts love. DDJ had a bad year, followed by a breakout season. He also plays a position in the minors that is sometimes devalued. So, not surprised that he's not ranked higher, though he probably should be.

I was a little shocked to see Springer ranked so highly, but I get caught up in all the concern over his contact rate and lose track of his tool shed. He's an incredibly talented player who is flying through the system. If he has a good season at Double-A this year, Springer has a shot at being a Top 25 prospect next year.

The big notable here is that Lance McCullers, Jr. is on the list and ranked pretty highly. He's not the highest drafted pitcher from the 2013 draft, but he's up there. That tells me the BA scouts and writers are convinced he can stick as a starter, giving him top of the rotation potential instead of back of the bullpen stuff.

I'm also not surprised Subber disagreed with the ranking, since McCullers is his nemesis.

TCB's top prospect list went:

Singleton

Correa

Springer

DDJ

Cosart

McCullers

What are your thoughts? Is this too high for Correa and McCullers? How low is this ranking for DDJ? Are you happy so many Astros prospects made the cut?
