What if...
The Astros sign Bourn to a 1 year, 10 to 15 million dollar deal? Here's why it makes sense for everyone:
For Bourn: he gets paid this year, but has to come home to a lousy team for the spring and early summer. It won't be in the contract, but everyone knows he'll be traded in July, because with Luhnow, everything is for sale that's not nailed to the floor. As a midseason trade, Bourn cannot receive a qualifying offer from his new trade, eliminating the drag on his market he's experienced this offseason. He can get his longer term deal then with the team of his choice.
For the Astros, signing Bourn would mean giving up the 2-1 pick. However, I would definitely trust this regime to make a trade with Bourn at midseason, betting the prospect package received in return would surpass the value of 2-1. Even if it means a drop in the bonus pool available in the draft, wouldn't this make sense? If Bourn brings back a top 100 player, and a top 10 organization player, wouldn't that be a better haul than just the 2-1 pick?
I would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts. I don't post often, but felt this is an option that merits consideration.
