As Houston's offseason needs and objectives become more clear, I have been thinking it would be really neat for them to either bring back some former 'stros or (more likely) bring back some home town guys.
Houston has needs at 1B, OF, backup SS, SP, and RP.
Option A, sign a bunch of former stros: Berkman comes back to split 1B/DH with Carter until Singleton is ready, at which point he either retires or gets traded to a contender. Barmes is signed as a backup SS. Oswalt replaces Bedard. Myers and Valverde are brought back in bullpen roles. Those guys wouldn't make much difference since they are mostly washed up but none of them would be expensive and they'd generate interest among the casual fan.
Option B, sign a bunch of hometown guys: Loney is brought in to play 1B. Chris Young for RF, Scott Kazmir replaces Bedard, and Jesse Crain becomes the closer. All 4 fit needs, would make a meaningful upgrade, and should fit under the teams payroll. Plus they'd all be great in the community and may be willing to take a discount
anybody else I'm missing that is a pending free agent and either a former stro or Houston bred?.
