Here are 2 proposals to make the fan experience better. One is a rule change and the other a directive to the umpires concerning an existing rule.
No. 1 (Rule change) A batter may not leave the batter's box nor shall the umpire grant him time to adjust his equipment after taking a pitch. Exception: If the batter is forced from the batter's box by the pitch he will be granted time to adjust his helmet before the next pitch. Nevertheless, the batter shall return to the batter's box immediately. Penalty: the umpire shall assess a strike against the batter for non-compliance with the rule.
No. 2 (Directive to the Umpires) The second base umpire shall carry a stopwatch which he shall display conspicuously during the game and rigorously enforce the current time rules related to pitching.
I would like to have the rule apply to the batter no matter what the result on a pitch, but have not figured out how to craft it, as I can see that a swing may well loosen the batting gloves or the helmet. Perhaps after a year or two with the new rule we could figure out how to keep the batter in the box even when he swings. Maybe everybody else loves watching batters go through their pre-swing rituals, but I hate it, and I do not think it really helps them. Do your ritual before you get in the box, but once in there, let's go.
