With the Biggio snub for the HOF I thought I would do a little comparison of their careers since Yount was a first ballot HOFer. If the statistical difference is slight I'm going to judge it as a push or even.
Hits: Biggio 3060, Yount 3142 advantage=push
BA: Biggio .281, Yount .285 advantage=push
HRs: Biggio 291, Yount 251 advantage=Biggio
Doubles: Biggio 668, Yount 583 advantage=Biggio
SB: Biggio 414, Yount 271 advantage=Biggio
OBP: Biggio .363, Yount .342 advantage=Biggio
WAR: Biggio 70.5, Yount 74 advantage=push
SLG; Biggio .433, Yount ..430 advantage=push
Runs: Biggio 1844, Yount 1632 advantage=Biggio
RBI: Biggio 1175, Yount 1406 advantage=Yount
MVPs: Biggio 0, Yount 2 (at 2 different positions) advantage=Yount
Both players were rated below average on most defensive metrics. Yount may have a slight advantage.
Both players played demanding defensive positions. Biggio (Catcher, 2B, CF with a little LF) Yount (SS, CF)
I would like to look into more advanced metrics later on to further compare their careers but the only justification I can make for Yount being a 1st ballot HOFer and Biggio not is the eras they played in and Yount's MVPs (the fact that he's one of only 3 players to win MVP at 2 different positions is pretty impressive) because the raw numbers favor Biggio in a lot of aspects. Just furthers my belief that Biggio should have been voted in yesterday.
Just thought I would post this for some food for thought.
