Updated 5:14 CT: Juan Abreu designated for assignment.
Update 4:43 CT: Jordan Schafer to 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury.
Update: Zachary Levine is reporting that Brandon Barnes is indeed being called up. The corresponding move remains to be seen. More news as we get it. We are looking at possibly doing a podcast reacting to the call-up tonight, so be on the lookout for that. -Tim
News broke this morning that Oklahoma City out-fielder Brandon Barnes has been called up to the majors. The news came from the Corpus Christi Hooks official twitter page in a congratulations to Barnes. The only issue now is that the tweet has been deleted and we are left with this:
A guess, just a guess: Barnes told of callup. Astros were going to send a guy out when they arrived at MMP. Premature tweet, since deleted.
Interesting! While this is a guess from Z, it's what many of us are already expecting. This could be the nail in the coffin for Jordan Schafer or Brian Bogusevic, or it could be the demotion for J.D. Martinez. If it's J.D., there will have to be another move as the 40-man roster is maxed out and Barnes is currently not a member of it. Based on David's article this morning, I would hope it's not Bogey and the hope is that Schafer's top talent will eventually come around.
The other way this could go is that a player has been put on waivers and was claimed, leaving Jeff Luhnow rummaging through scouting reports and running up the minutes on his cell phone working out a trade while contemplating letting the player just be claimed outright.
As for Barnes, he has seen his value sky-rocket this season as he dominated the Texas League to the tune of a .944 OPS while providing solid defense in centerfield. He was then promoted to AAA and while his average and OBP have increased, his SLG has quickly declined by nearly 100 points. His current line stands at .323/.383/.477. It's definitely not a bad line for an athlete roaming the vast centerfield of MMP.
More news to be added throughout the day. Stay Tuned!
