Time to take a stand. Brad Mills is NOT the worst manager that the Astros have ever had. If you think that, obviously you are not old enough or your memory is not good enough to remember the Terry Collins and Jimy Williams days.
Terry Collins could not manage a T-Ball team back then and he's doing yet another bang up job with the Mets. The Astros lineup boasted Biggio, Bagwell and Caminiti and the pitching staff was anchored by Kile, Hampton and Drabek. They literally were able to get to .500 in spite of Collins insane moves. He was so bad and the team was so good that Larry Dierker was able to step out of the broadcast booth and take the same team to the playoffs 3 years in a row and 4 of his 5 years.
Jimy Williams was a prize as well. His team had Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman and Hidalgo in their primes with Roy O as the ace of the staff. Once the front office finally figured out how bad this guy was in 2004, they fired him and brought Phil Garner in to save the team. Garner had that unreal stretch in his first half year that the Astros went from 19-1/2 games out to the wildcard team under Garner. This team had talent and Williams didn't know how to use it.
Brad Mills has NO TALENT to coach. Terrible hitters, a mixture of "What do we get today" pitchers, a bull pen that is ...well....bull, and players who have no business at the MLB level. Will he be back next year...who knows. But to say he's a bad coach is short sighted at best. But to say he's the worst manager in Astros history is absolutely ridiculous.
