I'm pinch hitting for Subber today, so I won't try to hit you with as much analysis as he would. I do want to highlight a couple of pitching performances, though.
First up is Rudy Owens. Yesterday, I saw a comment talking about his terrible first inning and thought to myself, "Oh, well. Guess that's a lost start." Turns out, it was just the worst inning he'd throw, as Owens locked down for the next 4 2/3 frames. He didn't blow by anyone with a bunch of strikeouts, but he did get a ton of ground balls. That's what will help him to succeed at the major league level someday soon. Also, it's encouraging that he was able to pitch deeper into the game after starting off slowly.
The other guy I wanted to point out is Lance Day, who currently sits in the Tri-City rotation after being signed out of the independent leagues. Day doesn't have super-impressive numbers, as his strikeout rate is pretty pedestrian most days.
However, since ascending to the starting rotation six starts ago, Day has been absolutely a master of control. He's only walked four batters all season with Tri-City, and two of those came in yesterday's start. He's able to pitch deep into games and generate a ton of ground balls (his G/F ratio is 1.39 this season).
He's also got a perfect 5-0 mark for a team that might set a historic record for winning percentage in the New York-Penn League. If you're looking at minor league stories, he's a great one and is having a great season because he just doesn't walk anyone.
Also nice to see Carlos Correa with a triple. Be sure to check out reillocity's first-hand breakdown of him.
