Holy cow! Michael Foltynewicz is pitching lights out right now! Last night he pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out six while allowing only five to reach base. Four of the baserunners came by hits, and just one by walks. Over his last two games, he's walked five, struck out thirteen, and given up just six hits in thirteen scoreless innings of work. This is the time of the season where he really has to start putting it all together to showcase himself to the front office. This FO is already starting to determine where players are going to go next season, and they have a big decision to make with Folty. Lancaster or Corpus.
To us, the obvious answer is Corpus, but I don't think it's as clear cut as we would like to think. Folty has lowered his ERA by over two runs from last year and improved in just about every statistic, but hasn't really been dominant. Dominance is what you really want to see from a prospect before you let him skip a whole level. And, Folty hasn't really consistently done that. He has games where he dominates, but then he has games where just gets the job done. These two starts he's been dominant. The strikeouts have been there, he's limited baserunners, and he's kept the innings scoreless.
The other thing I've noticed is that he hasn't been this good since the mid-point. His numbers are significantly worse in the second-half as opposed to the first-half. So, he really needs to keep this streak going to prove to the FO that he's ready to start in Corpus next year. Although, we may not be affiliated with Lancaster next year, so this may moot.
