Astros Minor League Recap: June 22, 2012

I attended my last Oklahoma City game for the season last night. I'm going to be at work tonight so I won't be able to attend the final game of the series. The hitting looked great in the first game but failed to put runs up the last two games. Lots of big hacks that went left them walking to the dugout. Also, it seemed like the strikezone was a bit large and Brett Wallace was pretty upset with it the past two nights.

Pitching wise, all three starters I saw were injured. Wes Musick was hurt on the second pitch of the second inning. He said they haven't checked out his arm yet and will when they get back to OkC. Brian Bass was hit on the hands by a pitch. Armando Galarraga left after the first inning. Luckily they have several arms in the pen that can pitch several innings like Sergio Perez and Aneury Rodriguez.

Aneury didn't look great. His fastball ranged 89-91, but most were at 90. He left lots of balls hanging over the plate that were begged to be hit a long way. Luckily, Nashville is the second worst hitting team in the PCL. He only allowed two hits and two walks, but allowed lots of contact. Really just wasn't impressive.

Chris Hicks looked good. Fastball was 91 on the first few but he got warmed up and was 93-94 for the last two batters of his first inning and the second inning. He got a whiff on his breaking ball that looked really sharp. Not all of them were sharp though. He still has some developing to do, but he looked good.

There were a handful of scouts on hand and turned out that most were Brewer scouts (Brewer affiliate) and didn't pay much mind to any Astros propsects until Chris Hicks came up. Those guns were up quick. There was one scout that you could tell he was there for the sole reason to watch Astros prospects. He really didn't watch the Brewers guys much. I didn't get a chance to talk to him to see who he was affiliated with though. There have been plenty of scouts there this week, but they all seemed interested in Brewer players only this week. He was the first that looked the opposite. Trade speculation begin...

Ariel Ovando had a big night! He and Jean Carlos Batista combined for a 9-11 night, with Batista going 5-6 and all were singles. Ovando on the other hand was 4-5 with two doubles and a triple. Despite Ovando repeating Greeneville this year, he is still the youngest player on the roster. I'm not going to emphasize anything with his numbers from three games, but this is at least a positive sign.
