Good mix of young and old(er)

Now that the unpleasantness of 2012 is out of the way and erased from my mind. It's time to look at 2013 where, come February, Hope springs eternal and Spring (training) brings new hope.

Now I'm not ready to get excited about the Astros as they currently are; but I'm going to put a little faith in Luhnow to give a little boost to this team in free agency. I'm going to make some comments that are way out on a limb but, bear with me, it's just my little dream off-season here.

If we end up going into 2013 season with Norris, Lyles and Harrell as our 1-2-3, that is just not going to cut it. They're nice pieces but the Astros need to find a #1 and soon. Norris is a solid #2 and Harrell is in the right spot at #3. I would love to think more highly of Lyles and youth is on his side; but his inconsistency, in my mind, makes him a #4 right now. Maybe a look at Jake Peavy. He's was a #1 before his injury and could be a short term guy until our kids start to earn their stripes. Peavy appears to be fully recovered and; even though he walked too many, he did strike out 191. He's only 31.

As far as the offense goes, JD Martinez is our new Jason Lane. Ship him off somewhere and find the power hitting LF we need. Cody Ross might be a 2nd tier, short term answer here. Anyone in favor of bringing Luke Scott back? Obviously we're all looking forward to Springer in the outfield, But while we wait, it could be fun to watch Maxwell and Martinez out there for a full season.

Glad to see Castro is healthy....he'll make a nice back up for the full time catcher the Astros should be looking for. Mike Napoli anyone??? I just not sold on Castro as an everyday player right now. If you could get a veteran like Napoli maybe Castro could become a 3-4 out of 5 guy, but I just don't think he's there right now.

DH is now something I'm struggling with. Not that I don't understand it, it just reminds me how much I hate having to move to the AL. But I guess we need a DH now so I’ll live with it. I think Napoli makes a ton of sense for this as well. The guy can catch, play 1st or DH...it would be a serious win for the Astros not to mention one less bat in the Rangers line up.

Well there’s my little fantasy. I’m really hoping to see the a little of the future this year and maybe catch a few glimpses of what could be, just a few years down the road.
