Astros Fill More Front Office Positions

The Astros hired Sig Mejdal, a Cardinals' baseball operations person, as director of decisions sciences. Mejdal was director of amateur baseball analytics with the Cardinals and will be in charge of developing data to be integrated into team decisions. Stephanie Wilka, a Harvard and Pepperdine Law School graduate, was hired as amateur scouting coordinator, replacing Mike Burns, who is now working for the Blue Jays. Wilka previously worked for the Dodgers and Red Sox.

Director of Decision Sciences

I’m still trying to decide what I think that means. How much baseball input will he have or is he strictly there to evaluate & improve the decision PROCESS?

There is a difference in having input in the decision & working to make sure the decision makers have the right input & are using the data correctly.

I like the hire & as an engineer myself (albeit a lowly civil engineer) I like his credentials. I’m just not sure exactly where his responsibilities end.

I think I’ve decided that he’s mainly a process guy. Which is fine but a guy in that position better have a solid understanding of the baseball side otherwise its just an added level of bureaucracy.

I don’t know if Law is still under consideration, but I don’t think either of these hirings have much bearing on whether Law could be hired. The amateur scouting coordinator position probably is mostly administrative in nature (it doesn’t appear that someone with scouting experience is filling the position). I doubt that Law would have been considered for a data development position, similar to the decision sciences position. Supposedly he was interviewed for the scouting director position, which isn’t involved here.
