Angel Sanchez designated

The moment many of you have been waiting for, Angel has been designated. I honestly expected another reliever to be designated, but I guess Luhnow had different plans. So now we have Lowrie, Marwin, and then we have Downs who I imagine is about the same as a shortstop that Angel was. Here's to Jed Lowrie!

I imagine Angel will be picked up pretty soon. Who do we know that can use a utility infielder?

Mar-Go is likely your utility guy. I doubt Sanchez gets claimed and will either become a FA or go to OkC

This deserves a full post later :D

As much as I enjoyed Sanchez when he first came up (6 RBI game) this was a move that needed to be made.

Sanchez was a replacement level player, and often played that way, but for what he was, he always seemed into the game and doing his best to help the team.

Good luck wherever you land, Ahn-Hel!

I wouldn’t be overly surprised if Sanchez ended up back with the Red Sox. They have some depth problems at shortstop. Or maybe he still is with the Astros in spring training if he clears waivers and takes an assignment.

I like Sanchez fine, but he is what he is—-a 29 year old utility player. He may well be claimed or sign with another team, because utility players have value.

I wonder how easy it would be to find a spare SS in case Lowrie got injured in ST.

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it. - Henry Ford

Well, they’ve got Bixley. And Downs can play shortstop if necessary. It depends on whether the injury is long term or short term. If it’s long term, they might want to pick another veteran up. Felipe Lopez might still be available.

Now that the Tigers signed Prince Fielder. Could that mean that the Indians try and make a trade for CLee? That is their best option right now.

With Gomes and Pena off the board, the only FA left that could DH is Pat Burrell and Johnny damon. I would think that Lee would be the best option for them but the FA would be cheaper and would not require them losing a young player or two.

Russell Branyan is another cheap option too, I suppose.

Well, this team is definately shaping up!

Bu-bye Sanchez, thanks for 2010…LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!

Anxious to see if he gets claimed. It’s nice seeing players like Sanchez jettisoned, as AAAA guys like him are the hallmarks of a floundering team.

Now that Snyder is signed, CF is the most glaring need and the only hole I think they absolutely need to address before ST. The ‘ace’ and ‘closer’ roles a wanting, but those can wait.

Moves I’d like to see:

1 acquire a CF (either through trade or cheap free agent—Ankiel?)
2 sign a high risk/high reward/low cost SP (Chris Young, Rich Harden, Jon Garland)
3 check the price on Lidge and Wheeler. If either will sign for 1yr, <$3M, do it.
4 salary dump Lyon if anyone will take more than $1M of his cost
5 get what you can for Lee, Wandy, and Myers (Lee and Wandy to NY for Burnett and 6 Betances, Myers and Bourgeois to COL for Josh Rutledge)

I also wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on Lidge. Something that I had never really noticed, Lidge is way older than I thought he was. I guess I forgot that he was college pitcher and had some injuries in the minors.

Lidge signed for $1 million plus incentives with the Nationals.

This article says that the Astros are among several teams which have made offers to reliever Luis Ayala.

by clack on Jan 26, 2012 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

$1M for Lidge is a steal unless there’s something we don’t know about his physical condition.

I saw that on Ayala. Curious with all the depth in the bullpen that they’d spend money there. Depending on the cost it might be a good move.

Other than CF, I like the way the roster is shaping up so far. I’ll be surprised if they lose 100 games again (of course trades could change that).

Dan Wheeler signed to a minor league deal with Cleveland. Would have gladly taken Lidge for that.

I don’t think much comes out of this one, but it’s another no risk acquisition.

I don't see CF as a glaring need

I’m completely fine with Schafer starting in center field opening day and getting a full season to see if he can break out.

I’m with you there. Schafer is a CF option with upside. He needs a full shot.

I’d really love to get a pitcher with question marks on a one year deal.

That’s a reply to SD.
