Crane mulling new name and uniform
Well, I for one, am to young to remember the last time the professional baseball team in Houston was not called the Astros. So I don't have much experience with a team being renamed. So by default, I'm against it. I mean I know it's just a name but it's the only name I have ever know to cheer for. And if it does happen it will sadden me deeply. Not deep enough that I'll change my baseball team, but it will hurt.
On the other hand, we are making some big changes and what is one more? I mean this would leave the Astros in the National league forever and start fresh in the American. So I can see the debate forming and both sides have valid points. I know I stand on the side that wishes for the Astros to always remain the Astros, but I know Crane won't call me and ask me for my opinion. But I'll ask you guys. Do you want a new name? And if so, what should that name be? Should we get away from the space theme as the Texans did?

Definitely
Don’t want a new name but I would like to see the Astros change the uniforms back to the Orange and Blue Unis.
Against it
The new uni/logo changes has been discussed heavily around here but I think the majority of us favor a revert to the classic Colts/Astros orange and blue because the current colors have no historical significance. I do expect some new logos and unis when we make the jump to the AL.
The name “Astros” on the other hand would be a hot topic and in my opinion I can’t see Crane taking that big of a jump which will likely be met with negative backlash. The name is entrenched with the history of our team. From the Astrodome to Orbit to the star logo…The name is more than just a name. With fan support already at a low point due to a bad team and an unwanted move to the AL, renaming the team might be like lighting a stick of dynamite and holding on to it for JC.

What you get when you look at the fan base is the older we get and I’m old, you don’t like to change. But the younger fans are very receptive to change and the older ones aren’t, so that’s what we saw with the American League.
I’m 30. I hate the league change. Am I old?

For it
I don’t think any team has changed their name while remaining in the same city since the Houston Colt 45s 45 years ago (not counting the Tampa Bay Devil Rays being shorten to just Rays ) . We’re moving into a new league and a new era, why not take up a new name?
Of course the name has to be as good or better than the current name. Something about the city of Houston that hasn’t been covered by other team names in the city like the space industry in the Rockets, and the oil/energy industry in the Dynamo. Certainly not something generic like the Texans (although I don’t mind the name that much now).
I would definitely would like to go back to the Colt 45s, but wasn’t that changed because of copyright law? Besides we also live in a more pc society, especially over gun violence, so I think that would not probably be a viable option. I’m thinking more along the lines of something to reflect the city’s history like the (Sam) Houston Generals, or even something with locomotives like the Express, even though both of those are already used by minor league teams.

Express? I think Nolan Ryan when I think Express.
Now assuming this has to be done and Colt .45s is out of the question, what about the Houston Loop? Team colors are smog and international orange. Logo is this:

Same name - new uniforms
I think it is a given the team will change uniforms – how much I don’t know. I doubt it will be a return to a former style.
I’d say slim to no chance they change names. The Colt 45 change to Astros was tied to the super modern Harris County Domed Stadium opening – The Dome looked like some thing from the space age so Astros as short for astronauts was acceptable at the time.

I’m probably in the minority, at least here at TCB, in the fact that I like the current colors and uniforms. I don’t like orange and really don’t want to wear an orange rainbow shirt/jersey.
I REALLY don’t want to lose the “Astros” though. The name Astros is symbolic with the city and losing it after this many years would be really hurtful.
