Astros Minor League Recap: POTW

I haven't been able to do player of the week in quite some time, so instead I'm going to basically hand out a player of the week but for guys I think have performed well enough over the past several weeks to deserve it.

Jose Altuve Award: Josh Magee

Magee had one of the bigger stories to end the season for Greeneville and put his name on the list for players to watch next season.  Since he was a high school pick within the first twenty rounds last year, he at least has some talent.  There are several factors that make you drop that far, including being in a small area, not playing the big circuits, or not having outstanding tools.  Either way, he's at least interesting to watch.

Pitcher of the Week: Nick Tropeano

Trope is one of my favorite pitchers from this years draft and has finished the season very strong.  Reports are that he's leaning on his fastball more now and his velocity is actually in the low 90's which makes him all that more of an attractive prospect.  He could move very quickly through the system with a good fastball that apparently has good movement and a changeup that has been described as one of the best in the draft.

I agree with your POTW picks

Tropeano’s last two starts were impressive. Subber, do you think they will start Tropeano out at Lancaster.

Cisnero also had a good year. I am ready to see what he can do at Corpus next year.

Cisnero had a real good game his last start out as well. 10 strikeouts in 7 innings.

Is Brian Moehler (however you spell it)

A good comp for Trope? He had LOW velocity with descent off speed stuff and good command. Trope’s stuff might be better, and if his fastball is legitimately picking up velocity this isn’t a good comp but might be someone to look at.

Only thing I’ll worry about with Springer are if his K’s get absurdly high. Wich they won’t because there’s no time left for that to happen. As long as he’s hitting the ball for an out I know sooner or later those hits will start dropping.

I like Cisnero and I really like Cedeno but what’s the deal with his contract? We have to re-sign him after the season or what?

So Minor League deal with a ST invite might do it?

Or will we have to compete to sign him? How old is he?

Good to know

Is he polished enough to make a case for the #5 spot next year, or AAA bound?

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 4, 2011 6:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He missed all of the 2010 season, so if he resigned he would probably be AAA bound. That would be good though. If you think about all of the AAA rotations the Astros have had in recent years, I’m pretty excited about the one for next year.

Both Aneury and Xavier would be good to see in Oklahoma City’s rotation next year.

Good to see Mier is finishing strong with a mini hot streak.

Minor League boxscores

Today was a horrible day for our pitchers in the system. Van Hekken had a good game, but Cosart got hit hard, Musick got hit hard, and Hallock got hit hard. Oberholtzer also got hit hard yesterday.

by conroestro on Sep 4, 2011 10:13 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I wouldn't breathe too much into Cosart's start as the Hooks are finishing out their season

against the SA Missions who are by far one of if not the top team in the division and their roster is made up with most of the Padre’s top hitters.

"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"

I hope Ross Seaton is able to end the season on a positive note tomorrow.

I agree with your picks.
