Wandy, Sosa, and Myers going in this series.
Winning this series isn’t going to be as easy as the Cards think (in terms of getting a sweep, at least).

Of course, they counter with Garcia, Westbrook, and Carpenter.
Maybe we beat Westbrook?

well, his OPS is .811, which is pretty good for a catcher. However, I’d take a .305 average from the catcher position even if the OPS was .650…I think with all of the recent emphasis on OBP, actually getting hits is being under-valued
OPS will tell you more but wOBA or wRC+ will tell you even more.
Starlin Castro is hitting .307 does that mean he’s having a better year than Molina?
Follow my ramblings on Twitter .
by Timothy De Block on Sep 26, 2011 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions
No, Yadier is having the better season.
Name a catcher who is batting over 300 with at least 14 HR who is having a bad season when you look at wOBA or wRC+. Especially a catcher with Yadier’s defensive abilities.
Batting average isn’t as useless as you think.
but would you say a .262 hitter is having a good season?
Follow my ramblings on Twitter .
by Timothy De Block on Sep 26, 2011 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Depends, I’m not saying batting average is the most important stat. The TV flashed the stats .304 14 HR 64 RBI, so that’s the stat I used when I commented. It struck me as a good season for Molina. If it would have said .262 14 HR, I would have still thought it was a good year for Molina because that is about his career average but with twice the HR…I probably wouldn’t have commented on it though.
don’t be brain washed by the TV, you must be brain washed by us.

I just realized I am very fat.
I went outside to videotape how fast I can throw a baseball.
And the number I came up with was a putrid 68.182 MPH. But of course, in the video it didn’t look like I was trying to throw it hard enough, so perhaps I’ll try again some other time.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
The second pitch I threw was anywhere between 80.579 mph and 88.636 mph (This makes me a lot happier)
But there is a lot of variance in my calculations. I will need a large data set to calculate velocity more accurately. Especially when one frame of a camera can change velocity ± 8mph
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

What I was referring to is that Barmes moved a bit off 3d base stopped when he got a quick look from Molina, but Molina, like a lot of fielders, did it very quickly, and that allowed Barmes to continue running toward home plate when the throw went to first base. That makes the play at the plate a difficult one for the Cardinals on the return throw from 1st base.
by clack on Sep 26, 2011 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I should also mention that Freese was not on the 3d base bag when Molina made the glance toward 3d base, which Barmes noticed.

With Barmes on third and Towles on first Wandy bunts down first base line
Molina ran up the first base line to field the ball and throw it to first,
As soon a Molina threw to first Barmes raced home.
Barmes beat the throw back to the plate partly because Albert Pujols was standing too far from home plate so his swipe was far from Barmes

He is from Austin. Went to Texas State in San Marcos. I was surprised to see him at the ML level, because it made me remember that I had lunch with one of his relatives a couple of days after he was drafted in 08. We talked briefly about where he would be assigned, etc. Shortstops don’t have much future in the Rockies’ organization, considering who their shorstop is. Maybe that is why First Inning lists him as a 2d baseman. His offensive stats look good for a shortstop…maybe not so hot for a 2d baseman.
