Pretty exciting night last night
Hope they get that 2nd seed and don’t have to go to Philly.

Another quality start from Happ.
6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K. While I can’t say it would have been a good thing to send Happ down earlier (his bad starts helped us get the #1 pick), he should have been sent to AAA a LOT sooner. I don’t know what the Astros’ thinking was here…

Games been good so far. The first inning is what I like to see from the Astros top of the order. Schafer walk, stole second, Altuve advanced him to third, Martinez sac fly.
Hopefully that’s a preview of things to come.

NL baseball at its finest, right there.

Deshais interview
McTaggert interviewed Jim Deshais on the anniversary (yesterday) of his record setting performance, striking out the first 8 batters of a game. It is still the modern baseball record. The article is interesting.
That was an amazing series.
Deshaies 2-hitter, followed by a Ryan 1-hitter, then Scott’s division-clinching no-hitter… incredible.
"Nothing says romance like a face full of QWERTY." - The first-ever edition of Ask BLAS
I like Deshais’ comment that if his record is ever broken, he hopes it isn’t a big name pitcher like Sabbathia or Halliday who does it. He would want it be another lessor known pitcher like himself.
Lesser known?
I know who Jim DeShaies is (kidding around – it’s late)

Kousmanoff has been a horrible defensive third baseman in this series.
He gives the Astros a chance, throwing the ball away.
I’m not getting this game on television. Is this being shown in Houston? Is it My 20? The Chronicle doesn’t show it as a FoxSW game. College football and lack of television coverage probably explains some of it.
I'm in Brooklyn
and watching on mlb.tv. Is that why Bagwell is on this broadcast? It’s not televised in Houston so the lawyers don’t know where he is?

Where can I get
A late eighties astros hat? The blue with an orange star and an H on it? They used to sell them on the astros website but now the only retro hats I can find are the orange ones.
You mean this one?

I'd rather try to steal when one of the best base steelers is on first.
Bunting would have been fine with a poor runner and/or a good bunter. But that was not the case. However, it is a god inning to be bunting.
I would also rather have Altuve bunting it that situation. Time and again it’s been proven that he’s not the greatest bunter.

On to another inning. Astros haven’t exactly been blasting the ball in the last few innings. Shafer got on with a dribbler.
can’t blast the ball when you’re asked to bunt

ya I’m just being snarky and the Carolina game just got done. But I’m still annoyed that Atluve is being asked to bunt simply because he’s small.

I didnt know thats why he bunts now...
Cuz he’s small…poor lil guy. I want to see him hit more in key situations.
by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 24, 2011 9:36 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
He is being asked to bunt in that situation because that is a bunting situation. If you bunt any time, that is one the times you do it. But you probably are referring to the fact that he has bunted in a lot of situations. I get the impression that Altuve has done some of those on his own, because Mills has mentioned several times that he didn’t agree with some of the bunts.
by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
and really it comes down to philosophy, I think bunting is okay in the right situation. But with a guy like Altuve who has proven he can hit in the Minors I think asking him to bunt is diminishing his skills as a hitter.

If the Astros wanted Altuve to bunt
why didn’t they have him in the 2 spot doing that? I think it’s a bit short sighted to ask someone who has batted in the 3 spot primarily to learn how to bunt at the major league level in the 2-hole.

they should have had him lean over the plate and utter a series

…there are a few. when I was doing research on the subject, I found a few, though it’s not common. My recollection is that Chipper Jones is pretty close to equal from both sides.
I don’t think that would be the case. Most switch hitters become switch hitters early (like high school or earlier) and they probably were star players at that point.
Did you find out if it was worth while being a switch hitter or not? I’ve always doubted it’s value but have always trusted the players opinion.
That’s hard to figure out, since we don’t know how they would hit if they weren’t a switch hitter. I don’t know where to find aggregate splits on switch hitters as a group. B-Ref doesn’t have it. My general impression from looking a large number of individual switch hitters’ splits is that they tend to have smaller splits than pure LHBs.
I was thinking that switch hitters were most likely true lefties that felt that they could get a an advantage from batting both ways. So it’s not quite avoiding a platoon. Why don’t you write an article about, clack. And you’re welcome, I like volunteering people for work.

I haven’t been keeping up with the bullpen usage tonight…but was it really necessary to bring Lyles in at this point?
i guess it was necessary to make sure the game had and end or else it would turn into a cricket match
pulling up boxscore right now.

…sounds like they were getting close to exhausting the bullpen, particularly since Harrell will likely start. I guess I just don’t like the way they moved Lyles to the bullpen.
I have a source that said the plan for Lyles was that he’d only pitch if there was a blow out, like last night. So I don’t know why he was brought in again this evening.

Nope. I'll bet he would have done a Miguel Tejada if that were brought up on air...
Remember Tejada’s episode when he was confronted about the age discrepancy? That’s what would have happened with Baggy.
The way ESPN set it up was pretty bush-league, though...
