You guys are whacking at your Pythag record lately

at least it seems like it.

Pretty exciting night last night

Hope they get that 2nd seed and don’t have to go to Philly.

actually the margin between the Astros’ Pythag record and actual record has been growing. The Pythag wins are 8 games higher than the actual wins. It had been 7 games in July / August .

Another quality start from Happ.

6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K. While I can’t say it would have been a good thing to send Happ down earlier (his bad starts helped us get the #1 pick), he should have been sent to AAA a LOT sooner. I don’t know what the Astros’ thinking was here…

Games been good so far. The first inning is what I like to see from the Astros top of the order. Schafer walk, stole second, Altuve advanced him to third, Martinez sac fly.

Hopefully that’s a preview of things to come.

Deshais interview

McTaggert interviewed Jim Deshais on the anniversary (yesterday) of his record setting performance, striking out the first 8 batters of a game. It is still the modern baseball record. The article is interesting.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

That was an amazing series.

Deshaies 2-hitter, followed by a Ryan 1-hitter, then Scott’s division-clinching no-hitter… incredible.

I like Deshais’ comment that if his record is ever broken, he hopes it isn’t a big name pitcher like Sabbathia or Halliday who does it. He would want it be another lessor known pitcher like himself.

Kousmanoff has been a horrible defensive third baseman in this series.

He gives the Astros a chance, throwing the ball away.

bunt was good idea. players have to execute though.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd rather try to steal when one of the best base steelers is on first.

Bunting would have been fine with a poor runner and/or a good bunter. But that was not the case. However, it is a god inning to be bunting.

by ntn on Sep 24, 2011 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I would also rather have Altuve bunting it that situation. Time and again it’s been proven that he’s not the greatest bunter.

If the Astros wanted Altuve to bunt

why didn’t they have him in the 2 spot doing that? I think it’s a bit short sighted to ask someone who has batted in the 3 spot primarily to learn how to bunt at the major league level in the 2-hole.

by Timothy De Block on Sep 24, 2011 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions

could well be a disconnect.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

…there are a few. when I was doing research on the subject, I found a few, though it’s not common. My recollection is that Chipper Jones is pretty close to equal from both sides.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think that would be the case. Most switch hitters become switch hitters early (like high school or earlier) and they probably were star players at that point.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you find out if it was worth while being a switch hitter or not? I’ve always doubted it’s value but have always trusted the players opinion.

by ntn on Sep 24, 2011 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

That’s hard to figure out, since we don’t know how they would hit if they weren’t a switch hitter. I don’t know where to find aggregate splits on switch hitters as a group. B-Ref doesn’t have it. My general impression from looking a large number of individual switch hitters’ splits is that they tend to have smaller splits than pure LHBs.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

…and most switch hitters are better from the left side.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I was thinking that switch hitters were most likely true lefties that felt that they could get a an advantage from batting both ways. So it’s not quite avoiding a platoon. Why don’t you write an article about, clack. And you’re welcome, I like volunteering people for work.

by ntn on Sep 24, 2011 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Lance Berkman was a true righty. But his father pushed him into switch hitting from his earlier age, because Micky Mantle was his father’s favorite hitter. Berkman turned into a better hitter from the left side, perhaps because he faced more RHBs.

I haven’t been keeping up with the bullpen usage tonight…but was it really necessary to bring Lyles in at this point?

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

…sounds like they were getting close to exhausting the bullpen, particularly since Harrell will likely start. I guess I just don’t like the way they moved Lyles to the bullpen.

by clack on Sep 24, 2011 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I have a source that said the plan for Lyles was that he’d only pitch if there was a blow out, like last night. So I don’t know why he was brought in again this evening.
