I wonder if the 50th anniversary announcement and the theme of celebrating our team’s history is in part a ploy to convince Bud Selig we are a team with a lot of history and should not be the ones to be moving to the AL.

Anyway, I really like the "Flashback Fridays" idea for home games

During Friday home games next year, the Astros will wear a throwback jersey that represents a certain era in the Houston franchise. Each month will highlight a jersey from a different era, beginning with the Colt .45s uniforms from 1964.

“We are especially excited to wear the old Colt .45s uniforms in April,” promotions and special events coordinator Christie Miller said. “We believe it will be the first time we’ve played in this uniform since 1964.”
One thing that I’d like to see is a complete change of the current uniforms

Bogey had a good pitch to hit for a homer, but insteads hits a hard single up the middle.

Bogey seriously has the strength to hit 30 homers in a year if he could just not be so ground-ball prone.

My immediate reaction: “Use your head, Towles.”

That was just a mental lapse by J.R. He had no chance at the runner at 2d, and he has to know that the runner at 3d will take advantage of it.

by clack on Sep 22, 2011 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Ya I thought he should of tried to bait the runner at third instead of going to second.

Ball all the way up Tal’s Hill. For a second, I wondered if he would have another triple by Carlos Lee.

by clack on Sep 22, 2011 8:12 PM CDT reply actions

It looked like he may have been admiring his work out of the box. But I’m not sure he would have been able to leg out a triple anyways. CF played it perfectly.

Yikes, Paredes acts like he has never seen a slider before on that first swing.

by clack on Sep 22, 2011 8:14 PM CDT reply actions

I serously doubt his bat going into next year. He & Schafer are pretty much alike.

I have more faith in CJ’s bat since he is a consistent LD hitter. Just that 3rd base isn’t the defensive position for him.

So I read an interesting article that talked about getting extra strike calls as catchers (linking tomorrow). So now I’m starting scrutinize Towles and his catching ability.

by Timothy De Block on Sep 22, 2011 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

I assume you’re talking about the B-Pro article. I tried to look at that spreadsheet. I thought about posting something on it. It appears that Towles is fairly negative in 2011, and Corporan and Quintero have been very good at pitch framing in 2011.

by clack on Sep 22, 2011 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

yup

I was able to open it. Kevin Cash was good as well. Robinson Cancel and Jason Castro were both negative. The thing I took away from though was how the catcher received the ball. Towles doesn’t move his head, but he’s moving his glove hand before stabbing at the ball as it arrives. He also seems to move his entire body after the pitch is made.

Follow my ramblings on Twitter .

by Timothy De Block on Sep 22, 2011 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions

One of the interesting things about that article is that Mike Fast (whose work I really like) looked at video of the best and worst catchers at pitch framing to see what the differences are in their movements.

I have said this before, but I don’t like the thing that Rodriguez does, pulling the ball out and back into the glove during his windup. It seems like it is sometimes inconsistent and leads to bases on balls.

by clack on Sep 22, 2011 9:42 PM CDT reply actions

Doesn't Bud Norris do that as well?

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

by BustaPozee on Sep 22, 2011 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I haven’t noticed the multiple movements with Norris. I think the initial movement is changing the grip, which Norris may do. But then F-Rod moves the ball into and out of the glove, and the timing doesn’t seem consistent and distance he moves away from the glove varies. Maybe that is deceptive to the hitter, and is why he does it.
