Astros Drop A Quick One To The Reds 2-0
I feel bad for Wandy Rodriguez I really do, this is yet another season in which Rodriguez will finish with a record that reflects no where near what the type of pitcher he is. I know wins are far from perfect but you still like to see good pitching performances rewarded. It wasn't his best outing but he did go 7 innings and allowed only two runs with one run coming in each of the first two frames.
On the other side Bronson Arroyo with a 5.87 FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) went the distance shutting out an interesting Astros lineup. He needed only 91 pitches to get through the Astros 27 outs and actually had a no-hitter going into the top of the fifth before Carlos Lee leadoff the inning with a single to left field. It really wasn't that dominating of an outing either with only 2 strikeouts and 6 hits allowed. The key was that he didn't walk anyone, or the Astros hitters didn't really feel like taking a walk. I don't know maybe they were really excited to get back home for the unveiling of the Astros 50 year logo. Game time was 2 hours 12 minutes.
Speaking of the lineup, I wasn't all that upset with it in fact I kind of liked it. Sure Jose Altuve, Brian Bogusevic and Jimmy Paredes were out of the lineup but it was still an interesting one. J.B. Shuck in his first return home as a Major League player batted in the two hole. His on base skills make him a pretty good option for that spot in the lineup, unfortunately in this one he was 0-4.
I'm sure you're all aware of my love affair with Matt Downs so I don't mind him starting over the struggling Altuve. I really like the idea of Downs becoming a super utility player, especially since it's very possible Jose Altuve and Jimmy Paredes get a long look next season. Having him as option to platoon with Bogusevic in the outfield is not a bad idea. He also unfortunately went 0-3 with men on base.
Chris Johnson was back in the lineup as well and unlike the other two had a nice 2-3 day with a double, unfortunately he also picked up 14th error on the season. J.R. Towles got a rare start as well working with Rodriguez who he's had some success with. He went 2-3 with a double.
So overall I didn't have much to complain about with this lineup, obviously I would prefer Altuve or Paredes starting in place of Johnson, but considering the results it's a moot point.

With a double each!
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
And I agree with you
Downs and Bogey would make a good platoon in RF. How is his arm though?

Angel Campos -terrible umpire
I missed the game but both team recaps indicated Campos blew that critical call of the catch that was really a ball off the wall. Last night umpiring home plate he was calling balls strikes and strikes balls ay too frequently.
Campos is Angel Hernandez’s protege , but that doesn’t mean he has to be as bad an umpire as Hermandez.

If you see the replay, it clearly hit the wall
by Patrick Harrel on Sep 21, 2011 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions
LIke how the Reds broadcasters made no reference to
possibility it hit the wall.
My opinion you’re guilty of cheating if you did what Sappelt did. Surely he knew it hit the wall first before going into his glove?
This bothers me:
Mills went out to argue with third-base umpire Angel Campos, who made the call, just as the umpire was watching the replay on the video screen above left field.
“He cautioned me when I went out there, saying, ’Don’t refer to that,’” Mills said. “I said, ‘OK, I’m not going to refer to it. But you saw it just like I did, and how can a guy catch it when his glove is not [turned the right way]?’ It all sounds like sour grapes right now, but that was not the issue; that was just kind of an add-on. We had some other opportunities and it just didn’t happen.”
There was a controversial call recently (Cards-Pirates, I think) where a double was taken away from Lance Berkman. Berkman hit a ball to the outfield wall and it was ruled a double. The Pirates manager argued that interference prevented a catch. The umpires said that LaRussa argued that it was a HR (he said he did not). The umpires used replay to review the call and saw that it was neither a HR or a double, and they reversed the double call. The Cardinals were upset because replay was used to reverse a double. The umpires said that if they in the course of performing a review for a HR that they can reverse any other call if they see that they were wrong. The umpires said that they cannot ignore a replay if it show they are wrong, whether a double or HR. That reasoning opens up a can of worms, by the way—-and here is an example, if Hernandez saw a replay which showed that his call was wrong but he refused to reverse it. I had to listen on the radio, so I don’t know if the play on Downs’ ball was high enough that Mills could argue for a HR review. But that’s the thought that crossed my mind—-argue that you want it reviewed as a HR, so that it the catch call on the double can be reversed.

Looking at that video link above, I suppose it wouldn’t be credible to ask for a HR replay.

Same thing happened in I believe it was Miami with Hunter Pence.
I wonder if MLB has told umpires to test replay in the gray area.

I really believe the underlining feelings with the umpires is that they want to get the call right. So if they go to review something and find an issue else where they’ll correct the call.

I may be thinking of the same incident and just getting the players and teams wrong. I thought LaRussa was involved, but I was going off the top of my head.

that was probably Pence and Manuel then.

Altuve has had some good AB's lately...
And his defense is worlds above Matt Downs’s at 2B. Why sit Altuve when he could be learning on the job? I think his last AB where he worked the count to 3-1 and doubled to left is something to reward. He never should have been benched this morning in favor of Downs. Poor player development at the Big League level is going to be the downfall of the Wade-Mills regime. Just wait until Paredes struggles next year, and we are going to have a real quandary.
I wouldn’t be so quick to call Altuve’s defense that much better than Downs’. The advanced statistical results are still too early to determine what we know about their defense. DRS and UZR show Downs as somewhat positive (UZR/150 at +3.2) and exactly average (DRS=0) at 2d base over his career. From what I’ve seen, average seems about right. DRS and UZR show Altuve as average (DRS) and slightly below average (UZR/150 at -2.1); but the sample size for Altuve is too small to reach conclusions.

Throwback Fridays!!!
During Friday home games in 2012, the Astros will wear a throw-back jersey that represents a certain era in the Houston franchise. Each month will highlight a new jersey from a different era. ‘Flashback Fridays’ will also include special ticket pricing, as well as pregame ceremonies, in-game entertainment and specially-themed Friday Night Fireworks, presented by Marathon Oil Corporation.

Do you think that’s telling that they expect there Pujols negotiations to get messy, or just a fallback option in case.

I’m sure they would like to have both players in the lineup.

I don't see Pujols going anywhere.
Boston and New York already have 1st basemen, and I don’t see Pujols signing up to be a DH. CHC is the only other destination I could see him leaving for (might as well stay in STL; better pitching with Carpenter, Wainwright, etc.).
Manny Ramirez is looking for reinstatement.
If any team wants to sign me, I would play.
Let’s SIGN HIM!!!!
