On next year's closer
the Astros really need two pieces to slot in front of Melancon and Lopez (and possibly F Rodriguez).
If the Braves can strike lightning with a rookie closer, why can’t we? Does anyone think any of the arms Wade acquired could do a job in the bullpen for the Astros next year?
Valdez?
He has good stuff but couldn’t put it together this year. I think he or F Rod have the best chance out of the new guys of making a bullpen impact. Or maybe the guy in AAA that we got not to long ago, I can’t remember his name. Think it started with an M?

F Rod has had some bad performances when he was put in 9th inning situations recently. It could just be nervousness going into that situation, but it makes me wary of him as a closer. Abreu could be a long shot as a future closer. I worry about his high walk rate though. I don’t think Melancon is perfect for the closer role, but I suspect that he is the best available in-house option for next year.

I really think we got rid of Manzella a little to early
We dont even know if Barmes is going to be here next year and Manzella would be adequate till Villar or Mier is ready
some people have brought up Witkoff as a fill in.

I'd take the growing pains we'd get with Wickoff
If we spend the money that it would take to sign a free agent and put it into the draft

I don’t think Wikoff has the defensive ability to start at shortstop in the majors. I just hate to see that happen to the young pitchers.
