Astros Minor League Recap

The biggest stories of the night have to be Ross Seaton and the ValleyCats as a whole.  Seaton, other than giving up a bomb, dominated last night.  The ValleyCats, just straight up dominated in general.

Seaton has been one frustration after another since he's been drafted.  He posted good overall numbers but had a disappointing strikeout rate in Lexington in his first full season of baseball, and thats been about the only highlight.  The issue has primarily been consistency with Seaton, one night he'll pitch very well and the next he'll run people out of the stadium in jaw-dropping disappointment.  Even his fastball velocity has been inconsistent with it ranging from high 80's on some nights and others being in the mid 90's.  Last night was the final and arguably his best start of August and it has been the most friendly to him.  He posted his lowest ERA (3.10 and 2.37 in last five starts), strikeout rate (8.0 K/9), and unfortunately walk rate (3.1 BB/9).  Part of the reason for his success was his lowest BABIP as well, but the positive thing to take is that his peripherals are the best they've been and are at the very end of the season.

I have said it before, but Nick Tropeano is one of my favorite picks in this years draft.  I think that he is a real sleeper and was pretty underrated going into the draft due to pitching for a small Division-I program and lacking a hard fastball filled with them.  But, if he can maintain the recent reports of him pitching in the low 90's, he can really be a steal.  I can't remember specifics on his projected draft rounds, but we snagged him the later part of it so we we ared definitely getting good value there.

George Springer had another solid night at the plate and was able get two doubles.  I don't know if he legged those out or were doubles off of the bat.  Springer is just one of many ValleyCats to go off last night as they scored sixteen runs!

Yeah, Andrew Robinson has strung some nice ones together. He’s starting to strike people out too. He might be a guy to watch next year.

Tropeano was listed at 89 in Baseball America’s College Top 100 Prospects list coming into 2011. He was somewhat of a known commodity, and he was probably drafted around where should have been.

He sure has opened a lot of eyes this season, though. He already possessed one of the best changeups in college baseball; if he can keep up his newfound fastball velocity, as you said, he could be pretty good.

Also, nice to see Singleton draw 3 walks in one game last night. His plate discipline appeared to be tailing off slightly at Lancaster, so its good to see he can still take some pitches.

No way they put him in CC to start the year. Best case scenario, he starts in Lancaster and dominates, after 250 ABs they move him up to CC.

Good start for Cedeno. Surprised he got a start.

Another multihit game for Villar. Seaton looking strong last night, hopefully his final start is good and he can finish hot. My boy Wikoff with 2 walks.

Robinson has been hot. Probably will get the nod to AA next year. Like what I’ve seen from him, Musick, and Buchanan. Really wish Cisnero’s ERA was lower, because his stuff is illmatic.

That Tri-City rotation has been absolutely money.

by Snake Diggity on Sep 1, 2011 10:12 AM CDT reply actions

Tri-City starters posted a composite 2.72 ERA in August. Tropeano is working on an 18-inning scoreless streak dating back to July 30.

*18 inning streak without an earned run. (one scored unearned last week)

Phucking TJ Steele!

What is he?!!!?!!! Is he good, is he bad….MAKE UP YOUR MIND AND STOP TEASING US!!!

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

I think we all pretty much know that he’s a non-prospect at this point. There isn’t really any teasing or making up of minds involved.

Each night when I check the box scores for our minor league teams, I’ll see that the Hooks got this many hits and this many runs, and I’ll think “cool, maybe a guy like Villar or Hinze had a good night”. It’s always disappointing when I open the box score and see that it was Steele or Gaston who did most of the damage that night….Hahahaha. Why couldn’t one of the legitimate prospects have had a good game instead?

Glad to see Singleton take some Walks!

Good night for him. Keep it up.

VEEEEERY intrigued by this Andrew Robinson fellow . In his last three starts, Robinson is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 24K:1BB in 18.2 IP!

Does anybody know what kind of stuff he features?

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 12:44 PM CDT reply actions

Ross Seaton

I joined the convo a little late today but I waited to watch some of Ross Seaton’s outing on my lunch break and waited until I checked the box scores. I’m glad I did because he had another good outing. I hate that the season is ending now because it would have been real nice to see if this recent run of success is Ross figuring it out at the AA level, or if bad Ross was just on vacation for the month. The fact that he is still young for his level and is starting to experience some success has me hopeful that he may still turn into something. One thing that I noticed is that he was getting more groundouts than flouts for the most part during his recent run of success. Hopefully he can keep that going. It was hard to tell on milb.tv, but it looked like he threw mainly just a fastball and curveball. He was successful with his fastball up in the zone, and was also able to locate it down in the zone as well. The majority of his strikeouts came on his curveball in the dirt which was his out pitch yesterday. Overall he had a great game outside of the fastball that he left right in the zone that was hit for the 2 run homer.

by conroestro on Sep 1, 2011 1:14 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Tropeano

I think I’ve heard people mention here on TCB before, but Nick Tropeano looks to have a chance to fly through the system much like Jordan Lyles did. He has been impressive for the ValleyCats this year.

by conroestro on Sep 1, 2011 1:16 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Andrew Robinson

Is another one that has been on a decent run to finish off the season on a high note. If I had to guess right now I would think he would get promoted to Corpus next year. Corpus’s rotation looks like it will be very promising next year.

1.) Jarred Cosart
2.) Ross Seaton
3.) Jake Buchanan
4.) Jose Cisnero
5.) Andrew Robinson

That would be a very nice rotation.

by conroestro on Sep 1, 2011 1:22 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

AAA

Sorry about all the posts at once, but all of our rotations in the minors look to be strong for next year. One thing that I like is that the Astros shouldn’t have to have guys like Figgy and Hyphen next year as emergency backups. Lucas Harrell, Henry Sosa, Aneury Rodriguez, and Dallas Keuchel should be able to fill that role just fine.

All of that of course changes if Wandy or Brett or both gets traded in the offseason.

But to have those guys as depth type guys and Oberholtzer and Clemens in the mix the Astros pitching depth has drastically improved at the upper levels.

by conroestro on Sep 1, 2011 1:26 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Oklahoma City’s rotation looks to shape up pretty nicely as well:

1.) Clemens
2.) Oberholtzer
3.) Keuchel
4.) Cedeno
5.) Sosa/Harrell/Aneury

by s0ssy on Sep 1, 2011 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Project for solid rotations all around next year:

MLB: Wandy, Norris, Lyles, Myers, Happ/Sosa/Aneury
AAA: Clemens, Keuchel, Oberholtzer, Happ/Sosa/Aneury, Van Hekken/Cedeno/Perez
AA: Cosart, Buchanan, Seaton, Cisnero, Robinson/Musick/Aristil
A+: Tropeano, Dufek, Hallock, Doran, Cruz/Donovan/Quevedo/Sogard
A: Folty, Bushue, Alaniz, Shirley, Cotton/Champion/Armstrong
Left for short-season: Houser, M. Feliz,Grills, Culbreth, Ordosgoitti, F. Ramirez, Lee, Batista, Perez, Tiburcio, Franco

by Snake Diggity on Sep 2, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Left out Harrell, who will be in AAA or Houston.

by Snake Diggity on Sep 2, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I watched Springer's ABs on MiLB.tv.

His first double was a well hit ground ball just over the third base line, and he got to second standing up.

His second double was a very well hit ball that hit the left center field wall.

His approach at the plate is excellent, so he should breeze through the minors.

I watched that game too. What did you think about Nick Tropeano. That kid looks like he could be something special. It will be interesting to see how he does over a full season next year. Hopefully he impresses.

by conroestro on Sep 1, 2011 1:59 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He's pretty much dominated at Tri-City with a 2.35 ERA.

Next year will tell if he’s a legitimate pitching prospect.

He works real quick. 6 up, 6 down. All GB outs.

Been following it on gameday. So, he looks pretty good? He’s barely thrown any pitches.

by MadMartygan on Sep 1, 2011 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, he looks good. He works low in the zone and looks like he has great command of his pitches.

They just announced on the broadcast that the Astros will call up Harrell, Lyles, CJ, Wallace, Towles, and activate del Rosario.

Sounds good. I sorta look at guys like J.D, Altuve and Paredes as september call ups also. Also some of the pitchers.

by MadMartygan on Sep 1, 2011 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Dam

I wouldn’t mind calling up Van Hecken and going with a 6 man rotation or sitting one of our starters down for the rest of the season. Maybe Bud or Brett would be good to play it safe. Plus no point in trying to win games, it’ll screw up our race man…

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 1, 2011 9:22 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Screw Nick Williams. There I said it. I’m not gonna root for my shitty team to lose. I hope they win all of their remaining games and somehow end up with the 5th pick or something.

by MadMartygan on Sep 2, 2011 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I’d prefer the #1 pick, but I would be content with a pick anywhere in the top 5. There’s no surefire slam dunk #1 pick so far, but there are five or six very good players at the front.

Still hurts that he signed…

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 2, 2011 11:47 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Except Rendon was considered a sure #1 pick at one point, but injury concerns caused him to slide. So far, there’s no Rendon, Upton, or Harper type of player that is clearly better than anybody else in the 2012 draft.

Hey friends!

Hows our minors looking tonight?

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 9:50 PM CDT reply actions

Buchanan looked pretty good. 7 in. 6 h 1 bb 2 Ks and 1 inherited runner scored. 13-3 GO/FO.

by MadMartygan on Sep 1, 2011 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice, I like Buchanan quite a bit.

Hope he translates that to AA next year. I think he can.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

This was actually his first AA start, I believe. Nice confidence boost to go into next year.

by MadMartygan on Sep 1, 2011 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok, help me figure out my prospects please?

It was either Tanner Bushe or Buchanon (I think) that was a hard throwing SP with very few pitches. I thought it was Bushue but somebody said he only throws around 89. Who am I thinking of?

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 1, 2011 10:39 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Bushue's a lefty with projection, think he sits around 90.

Buchanan is a control guy w 3 avg pitches, and what sounds like good mound presence/ pitchability. Buchanan could be a GB specialist or possibly a 4th SP type.

Bushue’s absolute ceiling is a #2 SP, – I think. if he ever gets healthy.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 10:45 PM CDT reply actions

Bushue is a righty

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

by BustaPozee on Sep 1, 2011 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh.

Yeah, see I get em mixed up too. All this time I thought Bushue was a lefty and thats why we picked him so high.

Now I do not know why we picked him so high.

… I wish I was high.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

Allright just looked up a few scouting reports on Bushue.

Man, he has potential. He’s still just 20, but seems to be injury prone.

Bummer. Hopefully he does a lot better next year, cause this year is a BUST. That 09 draft not looking so great so far -cept for JD.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 10:59 PM CDT reply actions

I am the only one on here.

No matter! I will carry forth!

I have been drinking a bit..

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 11:07 PM CDT reply actions

Just starting drinking so I'll try and catch up

I guess I’m lost on whoever I thought we had…

Also regarding our 3rd base prospects I think I might be inclined to post Erik Castro over Meyer. I don’t know why exactly and I’m not counting projection or development but he seems like a more legit prospect.

PS I’ll be checking back occasionally till about 4 am, so don’t think you’re alone.

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 1, 2011 11:24 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Right on.

Singletoin 2-4 2 singles. Meyer 2-4 too.

Springer… not so great 0-4 but no K’s and he has 2bb:1K so far. With a 857 OPS. Please be a superstar Springer, please.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 11:35 PM CDT reply actions

Im ok with players having 0-fers

As long as they’re no K’ing. They can just get unlucky sometimes like last year when Carlos Lee was hitting balls extremely well just right at people and couldn’t buy a hit.

by Its Gonna Happen on Sep 1, 2011 11:37 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

absolutely. As long as they dont K 4 times. Springer seems to me a guy

who has to make adjustments, and hes shown he can do it, so the .227 avg doesnt really concern me at all. His OPS is ncice and I expect tit to climb before theyre through – which I think is soon, cause theyre not going to the playoffs.

by YohannDookeyblue on Sep 1, 2011 11:42 PM CDT reply actions

We're seein I to I...

Springer is kinda like the Ovando situation though, just when we get him we gotta wait a year to really see him play…bummer
