Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

The Sweep Is Sweet: Astros 2 Pirates 0

These aren't your Astros. Who is this team and who's this fellow called J.A. Happ. The Astros have swept only one other series and that was back in May against another division rival the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

J.A. Happ had a very un-Happ-like start going 7 innings posting 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowing 0 runs on 3 hits for his fifth win of the season. Maybe he should be called Dr. Hooton because apparently he's fixed whatever ailed Mr. Happ. As much as we rag on the guy for not being very pleasing to the eyes statistically you always root for him to have games like these, where all your statistical mumbo jumbo can be thrown out the window.

The Astros did miss some opportunities that would of blown this game open like last night. For whatever reasons they didn't have their mojo, but that's okay because they provided just enough to win.

If you like small ball this was your game as both runs scored came via a ground out and a bunt single. Jimmy Paredes was the first to score on a Humberto Quintero ground out to catcher Ryan Doumit who initially looked back Paredes at third before throwing to first, Paredes still decided to come home after the throw was made. The return throw would go eventually end up out of play allowing Paredes to score the first run. After a J.A. Happ walk, his third of the season, Jordan Schafer laid down a perfect bunt single that allowed Angel Sanchez to score.

Mark "The Shark" Melancon came in the ninth to close out the game and secure his sixteenth save of the season.

With the win the Astros now have a 47-90 record, a four game winning streak and a 5-5 record in their last 10 games. To avoid losing a 100 games this season the Astros will need to go 16-9 the rest of the way. If they continue to play like this it's very possible and certainly something to root for.

Anyway, it was an awesome win and a sweep we’ve been desperately needing. A little momentum going into 2012 wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world would it?

YES IT WOULD BE TEERRRRIBLE, last year we were good in the 2nd half and then this year happened, although last year did end sour in the last 13 games.

If i were Arnold Rothstein id pay Ryan Braun all the money he
wants to stop going on homer streaks against the poor Astros....

am i the only one?

I just got back from the game.

If you saw a douchey looking guy in the Crawford Boxes, it was probably me. Anyway, great start for Happ. He actually threw twice as many strikes than balls. I found it funny that the Pirates decided against taking batting practice and proceeded to put 4 hits up on a guy with an ERA over 6.

knowing the front office incompetence I would expect them to run with

‘insert Astros 2012 slogan here’.

That might be an improvement from this year…..

Intresting stuff.

Happ just admitted that he was really negative and down earlier in the year, he says that hes changed his mentality alot.

Burt hooten is a witch doctor

He’s done a helluva job this year in my opinion. He fixed ja happ, he helped keuchel make adjustments, Harrell has pitched really well under him etc. Am i going overboard probably but i tgink he deserves alot of credit. I really like having a guy like him in AAA especially for the younger pitchers who will be up there in the not so distant future

Happ had a 6-6 GO/FO on the game

which is a steady improvement. Some things to think about:
1) Its two starts, against struggling teams.
2) Happ needs to keep the ball in the infield more to be successful.
3) It didn’t help that we had a pretty awful infield ‘D’ early in the season, Wallace-Hall-Sanchez-Johnson.
4) What he needed to fix was his fastball movement. He needed late vertical break to induce more groundballs, and get rid of some tailing movement from left to right. As Sean said to me this meant fastballs he wanted on the outside corners to RHers were tailing into the heart of the plate, and getting ripped.

Looking at the pitch f/x data for his start against the Giants and comparing it to his last start before being sent down, the average horizontal break on his fastball has dropped from 6.46 to 3.97. He is peppering the outside corner more, which is good, but I’d say he still needs more swinging strikes on his breaking balls.

Hooton

Let’s make him the Astros pitching coach next year.

Jonathan Meyer was pulled from the first game of tonight's double-header.

Anyone know why?

probably injury. At this point in the season, theres no reason to do so, even in a promotion situation.

I really like schaffer great approach at the plate

When you ask Carlos Lee what his favorite place to play is, and he anwsers with the words, anywhere with a Buffet. You know theirs a real problem.

Watching the games re-run now

Happ looked so-so… I’m not sure if he was as dominant as the Pirates were just bad. From what I’ve seen so far his stuff is good but I’m questioning his command. Astro batters definately have some swagger goin!

I’m excited that half of our team is going to winter ball. Not only will it give me some baseball to watch but it shows our guys are striving to get better.

Last 10 games

.500 last ten games. Great pitching lately and also coincides with Schaefer’s activation off the DL.
