Astros Minor League Recap
I'm sure most of you know now that Lucas Harrell has been called-up to make a start fro Brett Myers. Ed Wade said that Harrell was going to be called up anyway in September so he will be staying with the club afterwards. To take his spot in the AAA rotation, Paul Clemens has been called up to AAA. To take his spot in the AA rotation, Jake Buchanan has been called up. I haven't seen anything on a possible replacement for Buchanan.
These aren't your normal promotions. These are simply to fill rotation spots. Although, it does give some indication whom the Astros think is the most advanced of the pitchers at those levels and feel who could handle the next level for a start or two. Clemens is no surprise. Buchanan is a little as you could make a case for both Cisnero and Robinson. Although, Cisnero is on the DL and Robinson was supposed to pitch today, so you would have had to move other pitchers up on short rest.
Jarred Cosart had another great outing last night. He had the strikeouts to go with his innings pitched last night which has been a knock on him. His numbers caught up with his stuff last night. Although, he didn't have the extreme groundball to flyout ratio we have gotten used to seeing from.

Every time I see Kvasnicka’s name, I get more irritated that we took him and moved him to 3B rather than just taking Nick Castellanos who is a pure 3B. Oh well….
The Astros don't spend enough money on the draft to blow $3.5M on Castellanos
Blame Drayton.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
It really is a shame that Drayton was always so cheap when it came to signing draft picks.
Hopefully Crane isn’t a tightwad, assuming he ever gets approved. I don’t want any more “safe” picks like Kvasnicka.
I remember reading that Kvasnicka was a Tal Smith pick, and that Wade and Heck weren’t necessarily pushing for him.
For what its worth, I did see a few mock drafts that pegged Kvasnicka going in the first round proper…but they had him listed as a catcher.

He was definitely Tal's guy,
which is another one of the many reasons he needs to be relieved of his duties. What has Tal brought to the table, other than raping his son in a trade or two? Anyway, Kvasnicka’s bat is probably decent for a catcher, but he doesn’t have the defensive ability to stick there. Then again, he doesn’t have the bat or defensive ability to stick at 3B either.
When Kvasnicka was drafted, I was definitely upset, but I remember thinking “I can live with this pick, because the Astros are so shallow at 3B in the minors”.
Wrong. This pick sucked, in an earth shatteringly bad way.

I’ve actually warmed up to Kvas recently. He has some power upside as he is one of the league leaders for doubles. Unless your name is Prince Fielder or Mike Stanton, most players usually see power develop last. If he had a good glove, I’d be a fan. And if he was a catcher, I’d be all in.
Sneaky OBP numbers coupled with doubles power has me hoping against hope.
I think it was a diversification of risk pick. They took 2 high upside, but raw high school players in the first round. Then wanted to get a “college bat” with a lower ceiling, but higher floor. They had an Astros Insider episode on the 2010 draft last year, and Wade, Smith, and Heck specifically talked about targeting a college bat with that pick.
Lucas Harrell
Harrell has looked very, very good here in OKC. He consistently gets ahead of hitters with his fastball and is able to keep his pitch count down as a result. His fastball location is very good, and is 91-94 mph. He occasionally will struggle with control of his breaking ball and walk way too many batters, but still works deep into those games because of the high amount of groundballs he has been inducing of late (just look at his GO/AO in his last few starts…wow). It’s hard to tell whether or not his high GB% is sustainable or not, but as mentioned earlier, his fastball command is good, and he typically is able to keep it low in the strikezone on a consistent basis. In fact, he has yet to give up a home run over 52 1/3 innings in the PCL, which we all know is a hitters league.
I’m glad that Harrell is getting a chance to show what he can do for the Astros this season. I hope he has a good outing tomorrow.
by conroestro on Aug 31, 2011 9:54 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Is the groundball rate sustainable? I think so. His GB rate at OKC is 53% and this actually at the lower end of his GB rates at previous minor league and major league levels. He seems to be capable of extreme groundball percentages (55 – 65 %). His OKC stats look good…except his BB rate is high enough to be a concern.
It’s cool to see Deshields rack up 30 stolen bases on the season. While his numbers look kind of ugly this season, they aren’t TERRIBLE for an 18 year old in his first year of full season ball. He’s shown power, speed, and the encouraging ability to draw a walk here and there.

Why is everyone so high on this kid?
I absolutely hated this pick at the time and even now, I just do not understand why you would go with a toolsy, high school kid that is right handed and plays CF/2B. Those guys are a dime a freaking dozen, almost any player that is right handed can play 2B or 1B. His upside is not even that great, he could be Delino DeShields Sr, without the switch hitting and maybe a little more power, big freaking whoop. I just hope that he gets high enough of a prospect so we can trade him for something later.
It's called plus plus speed and the frame to add muscle muscle to hit for above avg.
power plus he grew up around ML ball players and knows what it takes to succeed at the ML level.
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
I dont know why we would draft anyone specifically for 2B
We drafted a guy late this year that was a college 2B. I would rather any other position drafted
Why not? Teams draft specifically for other postions right? So why not draft specifically
for 2nd?
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
Second base is a premium position (both middle infield positions are premium positions). If DDS reaches his ceiling, he will be a very valuable player at second base. His value at other positions would less.

I think it was a good pick. I liked it then, and I’m still on board with it. Craig Biggio wasn’t a dime a dozen player. And there is no reason that DDS can’t have a similar ceiling. He is just a long way from proving anything because he is so young.

umm 15 hr potential, 30+ stolen base potential… decent eye… good defender…. your right… why was he worth that pick???? whoelse did wade draft at 2b that had similar tools… plays 2nd for the phillies now…. not saying he will match utleys power… but 15/30 potential with good defense not bad for 2nd base… think people will eat their words on DDJ. remember… hes 18
by strokin_stros on Aug 31, 2011 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions
I wasn't a huge fan of the DDJ pick
Would rather have had Sale or Choice or Whitson BUT DDJ has had a decent 1st year for an 18 year old. Seems like he’s learning to make adjustments and he’s showing his speed and power.
Next year SHOULD be a big jump for him. I’d expect everything to go up, and for him to hover around his July numbers for most of the season, which were very good.
by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 31, 2011 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Deshields is young and very raw, but his ceiling is a player similar to Carl Crawford. Decent power, tons of stolen bases, which is more valuable at 2nd base than in the outfield. I think he was a solid pick at #8 overall, and he definitely wouldn’t have lasted much longer if we didn’t take him there.

how did we acquire Harrell?
Did the White Sox release him? I know he has had a slow rise to AAA, bit he’s always been solid.
by Brad E on Aug 31, 2011 9:36 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
The White Sox DFA'd him for some reason,
and the Astros claimed him.
Awesome. I looked at his milb career numbers and can’t think of why they would dfa him. I hope he does well in Houston. Thanks for the giving us your observations on him. You work for the Redhawks right?
by Brad E on Aug 31, 2011 10:05 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yes, I work for the RedHawks.
I work in sales, so I’m at a majority of the games, but I don’t always get to watch very closely. Harrell has easily been the most impressive starter I’ve seen for the RedHawks this year.
Jarred Cosart
Jared looked unhittable in the first and second innings. Everything was clicking and he struck out the side in the second inning. He struggled with location in the third inning, rebounded for a quick fourth, and struggled with location again in the fifth. He showed that he can be dominant at times, and I’m sure that he will only get better next year as he gets more acclimated to the league.

Tropeano
While I’m thinking about it, I wanted to mention Levine’s minor league report on Nick Tropeano at Tri City. (There is also a report on Shirley too, by the way.) The manager, Stubby Clapp, says that Tropeano’s fastball is a good low-90’s pitch. That’s better velocity than I expected from him. (Or maybe I am mis-remembering what I thought.) Clapp says that the coaches have gotten Tropeano to use the fastball more in recent games, and as a result he he hasn’t allowed a run in his last three starts. He has struck out 20 in his last 12 innings. Tropeano relied mostly on his off-speed pitches in college, and they believe that he will have better results with using his fastball more.

I really liked the Trope pick
And I like it even more if his fastball is a legitimate low-90s pitch (we already know it has movement). His performance with the ValleyCats has been exceptional so far as well.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Considering that......
….the previous college pitchers recently drafted in rounds 4-5 (Duncan, Doran) have been absolute disasters, hopefully this guy (and Chris Lee) can reverse the trend….
Yeah, Tropeano is looking good so far. I wonder if he starts at Lexington or Lancaster next year?

Prefer Lexington.
Sending a pitcher to Lancaster is asking him to get lit up.

I think Trope is going to be one of our top pitching prospects soon enough.
I can see him being a B- prospect if he continues to pitch this well. He’s been lights out at Tr-City this year.

You mean a B- in the next couple years?
Or you mean THIS off-season? I am really high on him, but almost zero chance he sniffs a C+. Again, I’m not sure if you just grade way differently than common grading standards. But for comparison sake, the Domingo Santana, who I am also high on, is going to be a B- at best this off-season. Realistically, it is doubtful we have anyone higher than a B- other than the top 3 prospects, though tons of them could improve their stock dramatically.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 31, 2011 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, no way Trope is a B- this offseason
Maybe after 2012 depending on how he performs and scouting reports.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
No, I mean in a couple of years.
Not nearly proven enough.
He’s got the stuff and command to maybe be one, though.

Could Santana really be a B- this offseason? I know grades are based on projection (which he offers in spades) much of the time, but would the huge ammount of strikeouts this season temper some scouts’ enthusiasm on him?

Yeah, he's a 19 year old raking in Low A.
He has the frame to project even more power and his K/BB has improved since he’s been here. So he’s a B- for me.
by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 31, 2011 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions
This was his age 18 season (he turned 19 this month), so he’d be considered an 18 year old raking in Low A, which is even better.
Here’s hoping he keeps it up.

I can see either C+ or B-
I definitely don’t think straight grade C is appropriate anymore.

Be nice if Springer starts at Lancaster next year.
I guess if Austin Wates can make the jump from Tri-City to Lancaster, Springer can do it.

AFL Rosters are out
Chris Hicks, Dallas Keuchel, Jason Stoffel and Josh Zeid make up the pitchers.
Kody Hinze, Jay Austin (taxi squad), Jake Goebbert and a catcher TBA (Wallace?) make up the fielders.
Would like to have seen Villar on there.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/winter-baseball/arizona-fall-league/2011/2612261.html
Villar is going to play winter ball
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
Yep. From Astros County:
Jose Altuve – Venezuela
Henry Sosa – Dominican Republic
Jimmy Paredes – Dominican Republic
Jonathan Villar – Dominican Republic
Brian Bogusevic – Dominican Republic
David Carpenter – Dominican Republic
Brett Wallace – Dominican Republic
Carlos Corporan – Puerto Rico
Koby Clemens – Puerto Rico
Wallace and Carpenter will play for Escogido, who will be managed by Tony DeFrancesco, OKC’s manager.
Wow, maybe I shouldn’t be, but I’m happily surprised that so many plan on Winter ball. Is that normal for so many to plan on it?
For relatively young major leaguers, it’s more frequent. And the Astros have a good number of Latin players in that category, and they are more likely to play winter ball.
