Astros Minor League Recap
There are three primary stories from last night's action. Anderson Hernandez is the first story as he extended his hit streak to 27 games, and is making a solid case for a September call-up. It's a really impressive streak. I'm not a Anderson Hernandez fan, but you have to give him credit for this streak, and could be an upgrade over, dare I say it, Angel Sanchez.
The second story is ObieHockey pitching a very good game. He struggled out of the gate for Corpus but has since turned a few good starts. I'm not ready to annoint him a top 10 prospect or even a better prospect than Paul Clemens, but he's making a case. I will at least say he has a better floor than Clemens.
The third, and perhaps the best, is George Springer leading off a double header with a solo shot! Not only did he hit a bomb in that game, he also hit a double to show off his power. He then changed gears in the second game to swipe three bags! I just wish we could have had him in the system a little longer this year to show him off to the rest of the baseball world!

I would rather have Anderson over Sanchez
Better defender – check
More speed – check
Better hitting tools – check
Switch hitter.

Anderson Hernandez likely is a worse defender at shortstop than Sanchez. I saw some of Hernandez’s shortstop play last year, and my reaction was that he is much worse at the position than Angel. That’s why I suggested in comments last year to use Anderson Hernandez mostly at 2d. UZR indicates that both Hernandez and Sanchez are bad defenders at shortstop, but Hernandez is worse (-18 UZR/150 career). I would not want to see Hernandez starting at shortstop for defensive reasons. As a utility player, Hernandez probably is OK. Overall, I think Anderson Hernandez and Angel Sanchez are similar players: that is, 4A replacement level infielders.

Mike Tauser aka FarmStros
has said to me recently (I think) that Hernandez’s defense stinks. Really bad.
If Wikoff is not considered a top prospect, why not see what kind of utility man he can be this September? How is his defense? He seems to get to everything at 3rd. Maybe he could be at least as good as Sanchez defensively, but also a bit better with the bat.

Totally agree with you on this. Would like to see Wikoff as a Keppinger clone.

Except Wickoff shows the ability to take walks.
and I think he projects much better defensively than Keppinger.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 30, 2011 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions
He won't hit for as high an average as Keppinger
I think he’d probably be better than Angel Sanchez overall though, who looks like he is a career minor league type.

Just because he doesn’t project as an everyday player doesn’t mean you throw him to the wolves. You treat him just like any other prospect you let him play almost everyday and then let him be in that utility role in the majors. He still has to learn what has to be learned at every level. He still has to prove he can play at the higher levels. His overall stats are being ballooned by one really big month and a few mediocre ones. He has some months that he was terrible. He’s not ready.

Good to see a solid AAA lineup. Towles, Wallace, CJ, Goebbert, Shuck, Durango and Hernandez are all really good players to have on your AAA roster. Why is Hyphen still in the system?
Love those multihit games from Villar. Wikoff deserves a shot.
Musick has looked good since his move to the rotation. Could he be the 5th starter in AA next year? Look out for my boy Jon Meyer. He’s a plus defender and has improved his numbers offensively while moving up a level every year. Hopefully Greenwalt can turn his conversion into a reliever into a success story.
Some hope and good power in Lexington. DeShields, Santana, King, etc. all double digit homer years bodes well. Jay Austin isn’t even playing now. Ouch.
Attaboy Springer. Embrace the hype. Magee and Batista have opened eyes in Greeneville.
Why can't all days be like this?
Astros win
Springer
Obie
DeShields and Santana HR’s
Villar – on base and steals make a nice combo
Even nice games from Mier and Meyer
by pacbellpilgrim on Aug 30, 2011 11:22 AM CDT reply actions
Meyer
He has put together a string of nice games. He’s still young and has plenty of time to turn it around offensively.
1100 OPS last 10 games. Def on my sleeper list; could explode in AA next year.

2012 Lineup, Bench, Rotation, and Bullpen -> based on no FA additions.
Starters
Schafer – CF
his .310/.394/.414 slash line is encouraging
Altuve –
2B prototypical #2 needs to refine his approach slightly to reach his ceiling
Boguseivc – RF
has the best OBP skills on the team.
Martinez – LF
he just drives in runs
Lee – 1B
Last year of his contract thank goodness.
Paredes – 3B
Has shown well enough to be the odds on favorite to win the job out of ST, needs to refine his approach at the plate in the Winter League.
Castro – C
needs to stay healthy.
Barmes – SS
needs to be resigned. His ++ defense and double digit homers from the 8th spot are ideal for this team.
Bench
Bouregois – ideal 4th OF that brings the ability to play all 3 positions and ++ speed off the bench in late innings
Downs – best PH in the NL right now, and can play every position in the IF
A. Hernandez – prototypical MI backup. Brings a patient approach, decent speed, and a cannon of an arm.
C. Wallace – Quintero needs to be shown the door. Most over-rated player on the team. Does nothing well, to be paid $1M. Wallace has + power, but needs to work on his defense.
Goebbert – lefty swinging 5th OF that has hit consistently at ever level of the minors.
Rotation
SP1 – Norris
Best starter on the team going into next year, as I think Wandy gets dealt in the offseason.
SP2 – Myers
Nothing you can do with his contract. He will get you 220+ innings which isn’t all that bad right now for the Astros.
SP3 – Lyles
His innings will be monitored for another season or 2 before being let loose. Still has the best stuff of the legit candidates for next year.
SP4 – Happ
Gets one more chance to turn it around. I think he’s told in the offseason to come back with 3 pitches and not 5. I also think him not being caught by Quintero will make a world of difference.
SP5 – Sosa Explosive FB, needs to get more consistent with secondary offerings.
Bullpen
RHP – A. Rodriguez
He’ll return to the same role, long relief/spot starter
RHP – F. Rodriguez
Has been inconsistent lately, but is averaging 10.1 SO/9 is nothing to sneeze about
RHP – Lyon
Only 1 more year of his crappy contract to go. Nothing you can do, but he’s not the closer anymore
LHP – Escalona
Needs to work on his control, and stop giving up homers, but .590 OPS against Lefties is very good.
LHP – Wright
I like having 2 lefties in the BP, and Wright may have finally found his niche. He’s still only 26.
SU – Lopez
Most consistent reliever on the team, returns to his spot next year.
CL – Melancon
I personally don’t think he’s a closer, but he’s not been terrible in his 1st go around, and the Astros really don’t have anyone else better. Needs to work on his control, as closers should never have a higher than a 2.5 BB/9 rate. I think he should stop throwing 5 pitches and concentrate on 2-3.

Bogusevic has put up middling numbers in AAA the past two seasons, and was largely an afterthought at the major league level until his recent hot streak. I know there aren’t many options in right field, but by no means should Bogusevic be handed the job. I think we should sign a cheap outfielder to compete with him for the job.

Why not give Bogey a stress free year to do his thing??
They guy is plus defensivly and has shown patience at the plate with some power. Signing a FA outfielder would be a total waste of money. Why dont we just use the money for toilet paper or just throw it outside the stadium so someone will actually show up.

Because Bogusevic hasn’t earned the starting job yet. Platoon him and Shuck, if there aren’t any attractive, affordable options on the free agent market. As it stands, there’s nobody on our current roster worthy of starting 162 games in right field.

Platoon him & Shuck? Bogey & Shuck are both LH Bats
Platooning is not possible there. OH wait, you could platoon Bogey & Bourgey.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
Shit. Meant to type Bourgeois. Let Shuck rot in AAA.

There is nothing in FA that is worth taking and Bogey’s ceiling could be alot higher than what yall think. I dont understand how you can be so negative about a guy that plays as hard as he does after the way he has been bounced up and down so much. Bogey is fast, good glove great arm and is has really come on with his bat. WTF else do you want????
I'm with you here.
We don’t need to spend ANYTHING in FA this offseason, or next for that matter.

I like Altuve as a hitter, but I don’t think he is your “prototypical #2 hitter”. At least right now he isn’t. He swings at the first decent pitch he sees and doesn’t attempt to work the count at all. I would like to see him in the 6 hole where he can just rake without having to worry about moving guys over, bunting, etc. I really think he could thrive in that role.
For this current team, in the 2 hole, I think a Bogey/Bourgeois split in RF would be the best fit. Even tho he is playing over his head right now, Bogey has shown he can be a decent on base guy and Bourgeois has killed left handed pitching this year.
Also, I think maybe CJ gets another shot next year. Maybe in just a platoon role. But, in the small sample size since his demotion he has shown the ability to draw a lot more walks which he struggled with mightily at the big league level. Also, his power seems to have returned.
Right now I like him in the 2-hole because it means he gets a ton of plate appearances, and I think he has the best chance of being an above-average regular of the young rookies. I also want to see how his plate approach develops as he matures as a hitter, it’s important to remember he’s only 21 and still quite inexperienced.

What a double header from Springer
though considering Vallyeycats had 7 steals I’d say their catcher might have been having a bit of a mare or pitcher had really slow delivery to the plate.
Bet he made a couple of Willy Mays style catches to boot!

Good day for the farm
Let’s see, we’ve got…
Wickoff and Hernandez both edging out Angel Sanchez for his spot on the team.
Locke and Shuck are both better than JMike and should both be in competition for his spot next year.
Anybody else want to see Greenwalt back in a rotation? It seems like he’s over his slump and I think deserves another shot.
Wes Musick has looked better recently.
Erik Castro could be a legit prospect.
EMILIO KING!!! He has been OUTSTANDING this year.
Nice to see Ben Heath had a good game. I hope he has a nice rebound, he was a legit prospect coming out of college

AFL
Aside from Castro the Astros are sending pitchers Dallas Keuchel, Jason Stoffel, and Josh Zeid with position players Kody Hinze, Jacob Goebbert, and Jay Austin.
My Internet isn’t working so I can’t do a fanshot on my iPhone but I’ll break this down a little more in depth in the next several days.
by Subber10 on Aug 30, 2011 5:04 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I would have too but that’s probably a factor from him signing so late and being relatively raw for a college bat. I do know that he is going to instructs though.
My issue is why the hell is jay Austin going? You get one player from below AA and there are at least 10 id rather send from Lancaster or Lexington.

I vaguely recall that the Astros plan for him to go to instructional league after the regular season.

Same here/
Jay Austin? I’d rather see Jio Mier (our 1st rounder!), DDj (another one), Telvin Nash (missed alot of the season), Jonathan Singleton, Jonathan Meyer, Domingo Santana, uh… anybody except shitty attitude, shitty everything Jay Austin.

Telvin Nash needs to wrest his wrist in the offseason
He complained of a lot of pain earlier in the year. Might be better to let him recover fully from his injury.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
I think Austin has a lot of potential though & a trip to the AFL might be good for him.
