Astros Minor League Recap
Big thanks to AstrosB for putting in an intro for me yesterday morning. My wife and I woke up just fifteen minutes before we had to leave for church, so we had to rush out the door.
The big stories from last night are the two home runs off the bats of Jonathan Villar and Brett Wallace. The bigger of the two coming from B-Wall since that was the purpose of sending him down. Wallace has to have a JD Martinez type adjustment in his swing if he wants to be in the Astros plans for the future. I don't necessarily agree that he has too provide a lot of power in order to be a major league first baseman, but it seems that power is what the Astros are looking at him for. They want power from first base and he has the tools to do that, he just has to make those adjustments. He has the bat speed and the power in his swing, especially when he gets his foot down early and has good hip drive. He just doesn't have the loft. His swing is too level. Sound familiar JD?
Villar's home run was his tenth of the year at AA and very nice to see him get a big hit. He's been struggling very badly this month, in fact it's been his worst month so far of the season. I think it would be a very bad idea to make him a September call-up when he's posted a sub-.600 OPS for the month and a .288 OBP in Corpus.

Hopefully Villar’s home run can boost his confidence and help him end the season on a high note. He was starting to put it together in July before this huge August slump.

Wallace
He hit the ball hard both times he reached base. The home run was to left-center, which is the deepest part of the park here in OKC (the wall is 400-415 ft). He’s been hitting the ball hard generally, but mostly just singles until recently.
I think some of Villar's struggles this month are most liekly due to his not having
Paredes, Altuve, and Martinez hitting behind him in the lineup. Opposing pitchers have no fear of the current lineup in Corpus imo.
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
Even if that is the source of the struggles, it shows he’s not ML ready. He has to be able to control an AB no matter who is around him and he’s not doing that.
Thats true to a certain degree but some hitters tend to chase pitches that they normally
wouldn’t when their team is struggling to score runs and are trying as hard as they can to get things going. The other part of it is just the simple fact that he’s a 20 yr old kid in AA long before he was ready for it. So expecting a kid to “control” and AB at his age and at a level he wasnt ready for to begin with is asking quite a bit. I think too many folks on here are beginning to jump off the Titanic long before it hits the iceberg when it comes to Villar.
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
Thats my point. I’m not jumping off the titanic. Just saying that he has developing to do. The fact that he’s 20 and not controlling ABs is why he shouldn’t be promoted. He hasn’t shown he’s ready to compete over AA. CC is where he and needs to stay. If he’s chasing cause he feels he needs to do more just shows that he doesn’t have the baseball maturity to move forward.
I’m not off the titanic on him, just saying he’s not ready.
I completely agree that he is nowhere close to being ready. I would be more worried
bout his defense at this point rather than his offense. JV has a tendency to boot the easy routine plays and nail the more difficult plays a SS can make. His offense will come around as he matures but I will never expect him to become a Barry Larkin or a young A-Roid or Jeter who hit for a high avg. and with 20-25 HR power. I personally see JV as more of Shawon Dunston clone. I wouldn’t get too excited about his HR numbers here as he tends to go oppo field when batting mostly LH and if you’ve been to Whataburger Field you know that the winds blow from RF to LF nightly and almost always somewhere in the 10-20mph range. Id like to see him repeat these numbers next year here in CC and let’s see if most of his HRs are here or on the road and to which field they are being hit while at home.
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
wind helps a ton if your hitting it to left field, thats why I feel bad for Gaston, not fair for him.

In my opinoin,
…a Sept callup would be good for Villar. Certainly not to play everyday, or even often, based on his performance, but rather to expose him to a major-league environment. It will help him know what to expect when he IS eventually called up to be a real contributor next year or in 2013, and hopefully shorten the learning curve.
Why start his arbitration clock? If he hits his ceiling, he is the type you want to keep him under team control as long as possible.
And, pulling a guy up to the ML team to sit is not a good environment for him. If you want to expose him to that, you do it ST which will undoubtedly happen.
No you let him get rest and let him prepare for possibly the AFL or send him to instructional league. Villar is also a candidate for Winter leagues so let him rest up. It’s a long season.

That's a really good point
I wasn’t thinking about Fall/Winter leagues.
In Sept does anyone think it would be good to shut Bud down
We have more than a few guys at AAA that it would be nice to get a look at them at the ML level, Just for starters Van Hekken and Harrell. Plus lets save Bud a few innings for next year.
Maybe at some point before the season is over. Given that he is coming off a very good game, I wouldn’t do it immediately.

I would understand if they shut him down but if the Astros were to make a run next year would not stretching him out this year hurt him?

Its not gonna happen, "Its gonna happen".
Dont get me excited about making a run, I always believe everything good is gonna happen but it never does.

The Astros will probably be a bottom 5 team next year as well.
I don’t think that part is a concern.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
At least we have taken one step forward with getting rid of some of the old guys
I still want Lee gone. Bags talked about it last time he was on that when he came up and the Astros were very young they lost 97 that year. The next year they got the wild card so I think if we look at it like that we are on our way back
I wasnt born back then but wasnt the wild card a bit later in the 90's like 95' or 96'.

oh ok its 95" but was supposed to be 94' but the players strike(not cool) happened, I think you meant the next year they went .500.

Exactly!
Its not ou of the realm of possibility that the Astros could be in contention for the wild card at this time next year. We have 3 young guys that if we would have had all year (instead of having Hall and Johnson (even if CJ is my boy)) we’d probably be in a much different boat right now. Between The K Masters offense and CJ’s defense and Wallaces struggles and the pitching staffs struggles, this season went down the crapper.
I noted yesterday that we really only have 2-3 real question marks going into next season, RF SP and the pen. Then bullpen is inexperienced and could do better next year with time and reps. SP could get a free agent or hope for a rebound from Myers and improvement from the young guns. RF currently has Bogey but could also see a FA. Everything else looks acceptable to me as long as we can retain Barmes and Castro comes back healthy.

Sorry, I can't agree with this
I don’t think the performance we’re getting from the three rookies you’re referring to is sustainable in the short term, meaning over the rest of this and next year. They will have bad slumps and adjustments to make. Also, even if they were to maintain this level of performance, we still wouldn’t be contending even with Pence, Bourn, and Wandy (who will likely be traded as well) still on the team. This roster’s holes are too significant to be waved away as resulting from a few players.
We have a lot more than 2-3 question marks. Basically the entire roster is filled with question marks. Even the best of our young players are not proven major league commodities. In fact, the only proven major league contributor we have is Wandy, and he’ll probably be out the door as well in the offseason.
I feel good about the chances of some of our young guys, but we’re still not talking about players who have multi-year records of production, and some of them WILL fail. That’s almost guaranteed.

I think it’s headed in the right direction and I’ll enjoy watching the young guys in the meantime. I just don’t expect much next year.

What I was saying is that next year we are probably going to lose 90-100 games
2013 I think we can have a chance to compete for the wild card if not the division because I think NL Central will be weak. But the way guys are coming along should be interesting
Re: Villar
I’m a little shocked that anyone considers Villar even remotely ready for the bigs…..he was only so-so in Lancaster, and I always figured the only reason he was promoted was to keep him paired with Altuve……He’s a talented player but needs lots of refinement; I’m hoping the new minor league instructional staff that we’ll have next season (must happen !!!!) will have the right people to bring out Villar’s (and Jio Mier’s) skills…..
Fully agree. One could easily argue that he needed more time at Lancaster prior to his promotion. If not for his newfound power in stroke in AA, I wouldn’t be opposed to sending back down to High A.

He should stay right where he is. Sending him down now would be silly especially when
Jio Meir is Lancaster and he’s struggling mightily this season.

SS, nice to see you back! You went MIA
Villar would FAIL at the ML level right now and wouldn’t be ready for another shot until next September at the EARLIEST! I could see a Sept call up next year if he can refine what we’ve seen from him this year. I’m not worried that he boots the easy plays and nails the hard plays, that actually excites me. The easy plays will come with time and reps but the fact that he’s already making the hard plays, those are harder to learn. It’d be great if he turns into our own little Starlin Castro!
Singleton seems to be the Altuve of K’s!
I’m really excited to see what Houser Hallock Trop and Velasquez do next year. I think we got some really good prospects to watch now and I’m really excited about our system!

I just noticed that Jonathan Singleton is batting .343, but he’s striking out about 32% of the time, also his obp is .400, with only 8 walks in 113 PA’s, so I guess it’s official that he has been infected by Lancaster.

...Or we are jacking with his swing.
We bring him over here and he just suddenly stops taking walks? I don’t buy it. I think we’ve been telling him to swing more to make more contact to make his avg. go up or we’ve messed with his swing.
In my opinion Philly’s player development is light years better than ours.

This is a kid that has been very patient and suddenly he
HAs only 8 walks? I know it’s a small sample size but that’s why people project him to be a middle of the order type hitter. I think it’s definitely curious, and I don’t think its out of the realm of the possibility that they’re instructing him to swing more, since his avg has gone up.
IF they are, hopefully he retains his patience as well. Maybe they’ve figured he has patience locked down and they’re working on his contact skills…
by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 29, 2011 4:12 PM CDT reply actions
I think it’s more possible that he wants to get a promotion since he was traded to the Astros system. One day he’s stuck behind Ryan Howard, learning how to play the OF, maybe a little stressed out b/c of that. The next day he’s playing in the Astros system, excited he has a clear path to the majors & maybe really wants to get promoted so he just wants to swing a lot.
That’s my take

I think he’s just trying to let it rip, and impress his new organization. I was a bit worried about it at first, but it probably isn’t a big deal.

I expect a big slump once teams stop throwing him so many fastballs. His future depends on how well he learns to hit breaking balls. Either he’ll be an above average 3B or a utility player.

Obligatory J-Wall AB analysis for future reference.
1. CB inside taken while showing bunt
2. CB taken for strike
3. CB/SL down in the zone fouled off
4. CB/SL outside fouled off
5. FB down the middle swung and missed on for a K
Analysis: First off, I couldn’t tell if pitches 3 and 4 were curves or sliders since they were about 78, but didn’t break much. That being said, it seems like teams realize that Paredes hasn’t shown an ability to hit breaking balls. After seeing a bunch the past couple of ABs, so was caught guessing on the fastball to end it.
Domingo Santana just hit another HR tonight.
That’s his 5th in 9 games.
He is absolutely killing the ball at Lexington. He’s going to do wonders next year at Lancaster with their hitter’s park.
DeShields has also hit a HR, his 9th of the season.

Doubt that.

Unless he wrecks Lancaster and CC like Altuve did and bat .300+ with a good OPS, he shouldn’t be called up.

I wouldn't put it past the FO, depending on who they are next year and how he shows in the spring, to start him out in CC next year.
Lancaster is a pretty worthless farm team.
Putting him at CC next year is probably rushing him.
Texas League has some pretty good pitching in it.
I’d rather he go to Lancaster and hit around .280 than going to CC and hit around .240. Keep his confidence up.

I agree for the most part and am not advocating rushing him.
I’m just saying that since we have shown an affinity for aggressively promoting players, I could see it happening.
That is true.
Villar to CC may not have been the smartest move. Could be worse though. Atleast he’s not hitting .195 anymore. Plus, he’s hitting a lot of HRs.
I honestly think Santana is a bit further down the road in terms of development than Villar was at the start of this year. Villar is still incredibly raw, but like I said, he’s starting to find his power swing.

"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too

Don't necessarily agree about the "impressive" part of his debut
The kid was obviously nervous, but he didn’t show me much outside of a nice breaking ball and a fast fastball. His command was horrible, and his mechanics are not strong in the least.
Sure, there’s some potential there, but there’s a reason Atlanta was able to get him for nothing this off-season.

And his command wasn’t horrible. It just wasn’t good.
Potential is all I care about. Got a plus fastball, and from the looks of it, a pretty good curveball. Just fix his mechanics in the off-season, and he could be a good arm from the bullpen.

King looks good in Lexington, but he's behind at least
Schafer, Bourgeois, Shuck, and Wates on the organizational depth chart
Next year?
He’s realistically had 1 good year and he’s still in Lexington. His strikeout numbers are not good, and he really has no track record like Altuve. To jump from A ball to the Majors just isn’t happening.

Last year was Altuve's 1st season in full season ball, this year is King's first
And don’t forget Anderson Hernandez could have played 2nd, but instead they called up Altuve.
If Ed Wade still holds the reigns next year, King could make it to Houston by the end of the year. It’s possible if all the shapes go in the right holes.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
Every year of Altuve's career, he batted above .300
King hasn’t done that in 5 years, and he stalled in the lower parts of the minors for 4 years. He’s having a nice year, yes, but Altuve’s call-up was based on a very impressive first five years, not a decent year after four mediocre to bad years.

I'm hoping Altuve, Martinez, and Paredes are exceptions to the rule...
Otherwise, I don’t think we should be promoting these guys before they are 100% ready to produce at the Major League level.
Are you kidding
Schafer is about 1,000x better than King, and he’s not even very good. At this point I doubt King ever makes it to the majors, and if he does, I don’t think it will be as an everyday regular… and certainly not next season.
