Astros Minor League Recap

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - AUGUST 27: Brian Bogusevic #19 of the Houston Astros bats while Chris Stewart #37 of the San Francisco Giants waits for the pitch during a game between the Houston Astros and the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on August 27, 2011 in San Francisco, California. Brooks is in a rush today so I thought I would jot down a few quick lines for you on his behalf (AstroB).

The big story last night, and of this weekend, is Hurricane Irene sweeping into the East Coast, so Tri-City's game was postponed, and there will be no game today, so they will play a double header on Monday. It was quite a scramble to get all the baseball in as it was. George Springer went 0-3 in his debut, so hopefully he can notch his first hit on Monday.

Adrian Houser threw possibly his best outing of the season last night, throwing five scoreless. Jordan Scott continues a strong season despite an all-star snub that had some people very worked up earlier this week. Lucas Harrell lowered his AAA ERA in the Astros organisation to 1.72, Brett Wallace cannot buy a home run, Jonathan Singleton continues to strikeout twice in every game he plays and Folty had a rough outing.

This is a question I wanted to ask, but haven't had a chance to ask it, and here seems a good a place as any. If J.D. Martinez, Jose Altuve and Jordan Lyles had not been called up, and continued the pace set in early 2011, hypothetically where would they be in your prospect top 10? Thoughts?

Minor league lines to follow on Friday and Saturday's games.

Ha ha, you had to mention Chan Moon, 0-4 with 3 K

If they hadn’t been called up, I would think that our top 10 prospects would look like this post trades:

1. Jonathan Singleton
2. Jordan Lyles
3. Jarred Cosart
4. George Springer
5. Jose Altuve
6. J.D. Martinez
7. Delino Deshields
8. Paul Clemens
9. Brett Oberholtzer
10. Mike Foltynewicz

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 10:53 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

I didn’t forget about Ovando or Santana, but I would place them just outside the Top 10.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 10:55 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Would paredes be outside top 10 as well?

by Woodlands'stro on Aug 28, 2011 11:38 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I would have Paredes at #13. He made our top 10 last year, but that was really more indicative of the weakness of our farm system than it was his talent.

Paredes certainly has a good combination of power and speed for an infielder, but I’m somewhat skeptical of his current major league performance.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 12:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Ok sounds reasonable.

by Woodlands'stro on Aug 28, 2011 2:48 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

That looks about right

And it’s a pretty damn nice top ten. Six top 100 prospects. There’s also Jason Castro—was his service time clock ticking this year while he was on the DL? Not sure how that works.

Paul Clemens

Hit his first bump in the road with the Hooks last night. He was cruising through the game for the first 3 innings, but really struggled in the fourth. At least now we will get to see how he rebounds from the rough outing.

by conroestro on Aug 28, 2011 11:54 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

My list...

1. Jonathan Singleton
2. Jarred Cosart
3. Jordan Lyles
4. George Springer
5. Jose Altuve
6. Paul Clemens
7. JD Martinez
8. Jonathon Villar
9. Domingo Santana
10. Adrian Houser

by lawson3 on Aug 28, 2011 12:20 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

It might be a little too early for houser

But I like him a lot too I just think we will have a better gauge on him after next year

by wdh001 on Aug 28, 2011 12:25 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

yeah. I'm always higher on pitching. Hence Clemens at 6.

So it was between houser and folty at 10 for me. And gotta be optimistic about the new draftees.

by lawson3 on Aug 28, 2011 1:06 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Steve Martin

Seems like a sleeper to me he was in the mid 90s in the college world series but he was wild. I would like to see him in a rotation next year to get more innings to see if he could work on his control issues. Emilio King has been on fire lately. It seems like all the hitters at Lexington are all or nothing a lot of hits but a lot of ks as well.

by wdh001 on Aug 28, 2011 12:23 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Here it goes

1. Springer
2. Lyles
3. Cosart
4. Singleton
5. Altuve
6. Martinez
7. Villar
8. DeShields
9. Foltynewicz
10. Santana/Ovando/Houser/Clemens (pick one)

What are the reports on Michael Feliz looking like?

by lawson3 on Aug 28, 2011 1:13 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Lyles

Does not make sense to have him in the top 3 under these rules. Don’t see him as more than a #3 starter (maybe Shane Reynolds with less K upside? seriously, check out Shane’s low BB rate and then look at his frame).

I’d say:
1) Singleton
2) Cosart
3) Martinez – dude learned how to hit for power at the higher levels this year; and he’s shown good mobility and a canon in left; Instead of a ceiling as a line-drive hitting corner outfielder, maybe a 4th outfielder on a good team; I think his ceiling is more in the 30hr range
4) Altuve – yeah, his BB is terrible and he’s getting exposed, but clearly a + glove, and there’s no doubt he’ll stick in the majors. And he’s 21. He showed too much power in A+ and AA to think that he won’t start driving the ball in 2012 or 2013.
5) Springer
6) Lyles
7) Villar – love the increase in BB rate as he moves up. Still only 20 and in AA
8) Paredes
9) Santana
10) Folty

by Exiled in St. Louis on Aug 28, 2011 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

Baseball America ranked Jordan Lyles the #42 prospect in the minors coming into this season. The only prospect currently in our system who ranked higher was Singleton. That is justification why he should be ranked highly.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 2:22 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

one possible reason for this

might have been his major league ETA rather than his ceiling.

by AstroB on Aug 28, 2011 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re might be right that his high ranking was based more on his youth than his ultimate ceiling, but he was ranked highly nonetheless, which I took into account in my list. Cosart absolutely has a higher ceiling than Lyles, but coming into this season he wasn’t a top 50 prospect due to injury concerns.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 4:34 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

*You might be right, not you’re. I hate my phone.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 4:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I think Wates is going to make these top 10 lists that don’t include his name look silly next year in cc. I think he’ll be in cf at mmp by the end of next season.

by Brad E on Aug 28, 2011 2:25 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

if this wasnt a "what if" list

And I took out JD and Altuve off. Wates and Folty round out my top ten.

by lawson3 on Aug 28, 2011 2:42 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I like your list. I think Singleton is #1 too. I think I would slot the what if guys in the same places you have them.

by Brad E on Aug 28, 2011 2:52 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Singleton

His K rate at Lancaster has been puzzling, and just a bit of a concern. On another day he could be at the top my list – it is pretty close in those top few spots.

by pacbellpilgrim on Aug 28, 2011 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Wates

Certainly well-rounded offensively, and has some defensive potential. I guess we’ll need to see how his numbers look outside of Lancaster and the California League next year.

by pacbellpilgrim on Aug 28, 2011 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

velasquez

we’re now 11 months since his tommy john surgery. I guess after the full 12 months we’ll see if he starts a re-hab programme.

by AstroB on Aug 28, 2011 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

At this point? I will preface by saying Im a HUGE JD believer. As in I think he hits .300/30/100 next year.

1. Singleton
2. Cosart
3. JD
4. Springer
5. Lyles
6. Altuve
7. Villar
8. Folty
9. Santana (like what hes doing in our system so far)
10. Ovando

THAT is a top 10 system.

by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 28, 2011 2:58 PM CDT reply actions

If you think JD will go .300 with 30 HR, why not put him #1? Do you think Singleton has a higher ceiling than that?

by Brad E on Aug 28, 2011 3:23 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I’m skeptical that Singleton has 80 power. He he’s yet to hit 20 home runs in either of his seasons in the minors, but its true that his power could still develop later as he’s just 19. I think 30 home runs is his best case scenario, but that’s a long shot.

Telvin Nash, on the other hand, has 14 homers in only 65 games Lexington (after a broken wrist, no less). If anybody has a chance at 80 power in our system, its him.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 4:41 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

*at Lexington.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 4:42 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Fun fact on Singleton via Astros County

Out of the ordinary: In 11 home games for Lancaster, Jonathan Singleton has a .682 OPS. In 15 road games, he has a 1.161 OPS.

by AstroB on Aug 28, 2011 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Well known, respected Scout based it on body type and mechanics, loft of his swing.

Power is one of the last things to come around. Im not worried about his power, Im a little worried about his high K rate and hope we are not jacking with his swing too much.

But overall his ceiling is the highest in our system and one of the highest in all of the minors. That’s why he’s on top 50 and top 25 lists. Like to see the K rate go down though..

by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 28, 2011 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m certainly not trying to tear down Singleton, because I like him a lot as a prospect. I just think we should temper our expectations. Most of Singleton’s prospect hype came from a torrid first half of the season in Low A last year. His stock has actually fallen slightly since then, as he hasn’t flashed as much power since. The potential is still there, though, and he should still be in the Top 50.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 28, 2011 5:48 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

JD

I could see .300/15/80 being a more likely outcome – and that would be considered a success, in my book

by pacbellpilgrim on Aug 28, 2011 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

He has 5 hr's and 25 rbi's in less than a month.

I know the league will make adjustments but he has proven he will too.

He has just now found loft and power to his swing and he has an excellent eye at the plate. A few of his K’s should not have been K’s and were bad umping.

I fully believe hes capable of .300/450/.550 and next year he’ll get close to 30 hr’s.

Top 10 based on a mix of what they've shown and how they project

1.) Cosart
2.) Lyles
3.) Springer
4.) Singleton
5.) Martinez
6.) Altuve
7.) Clemens
8.) Houser
9.) Santana
10.) Paredes

by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 28, 2011 7:07 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

For the record

I don’t think Folty has improved enough to earn a spot over any of these guys, but he is still high on my list. Villar could be a phenom but he’s so raw right now he might just be a bust. Ovando is in his first season and has done well but not better than these guys. DDJ and Mier were reaches and will hopefully develope more down the road. I think Kvasnicka was our biggest most recent draft mistake.

by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 28, 2011 7:13 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Kvasnicka

I still hold out a glimmer of hope that he will develop some power all of a sudden.

But I agree that it was a big mistake to pick him so high.

until springer blows it in pro ball he has to be above singleton unless you are baseing it on preformance

singleton is good but is a 1b therefore as an overall player is limited. As a true five tool talent springer is at least one if not 2 steps ahead of him untill he falls on his face in minor league ball if that even happens. I think pitching is more important and Cosart is the #1 today

Maybe springer takes over that spot and maybe singelton does but right now i think thats the way it starts.

1 Cosart
2 Springer
3 Singleton
4 villar
5 santana
6 ovando

by astrosfan1989 on Aug 29, 2011 2:13 AM CDT reply actions

For saying pitching is more important, you don’t have much pitching in there. I agree with you about Springer being higher because as an OFer he can have more impact defensively and similar impact offensively. Its like asking who’s more of an impact player, Josh Hamilton or Ryan Howard? Really if they’re both on your team…WHO CARES??

History will show you that strong pitching can get you to the WS, so I definately agree with Cosart at #1 too.

Still no word on Velasquez?
