Astros Minor League Recap
Jarred Cosart put in yet another impressive start last night by inducing twelve groundouts! Teaching a pitcher to pitch to contact is one of the hardest things to teach because it's such a mature pitching mentality to grasp. Jarred seems to be latching on right now very nicely and is inducing a lot of weak contact. That's what you want to see from a kid who is pitching at a new, more advanced, and hitter friendly environment than what he's been pitching in. Don't worry about his drop in strikeouts, its a such a small sample size and he still has his velocity. It's hard to make the jump he did and strikeout the hitters he's now facing. Pitching to contact is a much better way to ensure success at first. Once he adjusts, you'll see more strikeouts, unfortunately with the end of the season approaching, you might have to wait until next season.
Even with Cosart having a great night, he wasn't the star of the minors, Emilio King was. King had the perfect night by going five for five! It's a special night for a guy when you reach base in every at-bat, but he made it even better with a home run and a double. Congratulations to Emilio!

Brett Wallace 0 for 5. Yikes…not a good game for him.

Only 1 strikeout I guess if there is a positive.
Maybe he can get with J.D. Martinez in the offseason and borrow JD’s cheat sheets on how to add loft to your swing that Martinez borrowed from the Corpus staff.

No, I haven’t seen his batting practices. However, Wallace has a pretty high groundball rate all through the minors and majors (generally higher than 50%). His success comes from a decent line drive rate.

I would like to see him open his stance
I think he has enough power in his legs. Whomever said that have you ever seen Wallace? His legs are like tree trunks. I think if he opened the stance just a bit that he would be able to turn on the ball better and it would give his swing a little more of an upward motion. He has the power he just pounds the ball into the ground
I’m not sure it’s loft he needs to work on so much as turning on the inside pitch and pulling the ball more. Right now, Wallace hits from gap-to-gap which won’t lead to as many home runs because it’s the deeper part of the field. Especially at MMP where its 436 to center.
Legs
I think the issue is that he needs to lift more weights with his legs, I think they are a little thin, that is where the power comes from…
I don’t know. Wallace’s lower body looks pretty thick.

A couple of comments about Wallace’s issues from Levine’s interview of Barnett:
He’s got to be able to get better at hitting the breaking the ball and get better at hitting the ball to all fields, not just push the ball out to left field.
Barnett also said that Wallace has had batting practices where he drives the ball to LF, like they want, but that he needs to transfer that to the game.

Jarred Cosart
I know it was discussed some in the links yesterday, but the strikeouts don’t really concern me. The guy is throwing in the upper 90s still, so I’m sure the strikeouts will come. What I’ve been impressed with is that two of his five starts he allowed 1 hit, and 2 hits. In last nights start he only allowed 4 hits, so in 3 out of his 5 starts he has allowed 4 hits or fewer in 6 IP. That’s pretty impressive at the double A level.

Emilio King
He started out real hot offensively and has cooled off quite a bit since the start of the season, but .280 is still a decent batting average for him. I think I’ve read where he provides plus defense, so I was wondering if he put himself on the map this year with his performance, and if he is a sleeper candidate to keep an eye on.
by conroestro on Aug 25, 2011 10:55 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
I agree
I know he’s a non prospect guy, and filler, I guess I just always liked the guy since he came from the Houston area.
by conroestro on Aug 25, 2011 11:05 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
My bad. Thought you were talking about Musick and not King. I confused myself there.
Non prospect for King. He’s still pretty young right.
by conroestro on Aug 25, 2011 11:06 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
no, not really
they were unknowns at one point, but that is quite different from a known non-prospect.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions
every player
that isn’t an elementary school sensation is a unknown at some point.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions
True. Guess I would still classify Emilio as an unknown instead of a non-prospect. To me a non prospect is someone like Esposito or Van Ostrand.
maybe he has some tiny amount of prospect status
but it looks like absolute upside, he is a 5th OF type. and he is a long ways from being there.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t know about plus defense, I know he has one of the best OF arms in the system but I don’t know anything about his range or routes.
I wouldn’t call him a non-prospect like auclairkeithbc. He’s not a top 30 guy for sure, but he’s at least one to keep in the back end of a follow list.
My bad. Plus arm not for sure on the defense. I remember that from AppyAstros now. His bat was a pleasant surprise this season.
by conroestro on Aug 25, 2011 11:15 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
top 30 for sure??
man you are underrating a lot of young arms in our system.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions
I think Subber said for sure not a top 30.

Lancaster pitching staff
Lancaster must be getting thin on starting pitching if Wes Musick is starting now. I actually like Musick and was hoping that the Astros would have had him starting all year since that’s what he did with the Rockies organization and had decent success doing it. I think I read where he has decent fastball velocity for a lefty, but I think his offspeed pitches are lacking which is why he doesn’t have more success. I know he’s old for his level, and is pretty much filler, bit I still look at the boxscores to see what Wes Musick does.
by conroestro on Aug 25, 2011 11:01 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Probably nothing serious, they’ve babied him alot this year which I understand. I just hope he doesn’t become the guy that’s always hurt

Wikoff
Any chance he gets a shot at short if Barmes leaves?
by Graff21 on Aug 25, 2011 11:44 AM CDT via iPhone app reply actions
If he played shortstop in AAA next year, and showed that he can handle it, I think it would be more likely. But at Corpus this year, he has only played about 1/3 of his games at shortstop. To some extent that is due to Villar as the preferred shortstop prospect, who was also at CC. But it makes me question whether the Astros view Wikoff’s future to be a starting shortstop. We don’t have any good fielding metrics for minor leaguers. B-Ref has RF/G, which isn’t worth much, but Wikoff’s RF/G at Corpus would appear to indicate that his best position is 2d base.

Not as the everyday SS, but I really hope he gets a crack at taking over Angel Sanchez’s role. While it’s not known if he is a plus defender at SS, it appears he can play the position to at least some degree, and is used to being moved around the IF at 3B, 2B, and SS. He rarely strikes out; I can see him being a lesser righthanded Keppinger, which is way better than what Sanchez brings to the table.

Speaking of Wikoff
How about Wikoff, Orloff, and Neiko Johnson all hitting home runs the same night? The stars were aligned, I guess.
Springer
Springer is active tonight for Tri-City for the first time; not in the starting lineup though. (Assuming we can play…crosses fingers)
Is anyone an insider on espn?
Keith Law on Twitter said he has a new midseason top 50 just curious if any astros are in it I would think singleton and cosart have a shot
by wdh001 on Aug 25, 2011 5:40 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
They were both top 40 players earlier..I’m sure they continue in the top 50 area..unless they lose value for being on the Astros
by Woodlands'stro on Aug 25, 2011 6:03 PM CDT via iPhone app up reply actions
Hahaha…it would not suprise me at all if Singleton and Cosart mysteriously lost their prospect stature now that they aren’t in Philly’s system anymore.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 25, 2011 6:18 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
it wouldn't be mysterious though
if 7 or 8 new draftees made the top 50.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions
you have to remember
jose altuve mysteriously made it onto several mid-season top 50 lists too. if anything, the recent evidence would be that major prospect sources have a bias towards the astros. i’m not saying they do, but there is basically zero evidence they have anything against astros prospects, other than that they have been pretty cruddy until lately.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I firmly believe that if Jose Altuve played in the Yankees or Red Sox farm systems, we would all be tired of hearing about him by now. I’ll leave it at that.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 25, 2011 7:20 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
He would have never sniffed even a B-
before this season. not. a. chance.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions
I’m not saying he would. But he would have been considered a major sleeper and still would have gotten press, I’d wager.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 25, 2011 8:37 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
The thing is....
He never put up impressive stats until this season. He did put up solid stats, but not impressive in any way (other than he exceeded expectations for a really short guy without a lot of tools). He was only in A+ ball. There was no (good) reason to think he’d have this kind of year.
He was somewhat underrated though, even forgetting this season, but there was good reason to be cautious about him. He beat the odds, or is doing so so far anyway. The point however is that even if people who did like him as a prospect threw caution to the wind when projecting him, he wouldn’t be considered a “major sleeper,” but rather a player that has a shot to be a regular if things work out, and maybe would have given him a strong C+ grade.

Deshields with a home run tonight, #8 on the season. Good to see him flashing some power.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 25, 2011 7:50 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I'd give up the HRs for a higher average.
he is really streaky, but I guess he is only 19
by Michael McAuley on Aug 25, 2011 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I want to see HR
I like them. If he can keep his K rate down as well, that would be great (3 games in a row w/o a K now).
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I just don't think they are important in delinos case because at the MLB level he isn't expected to hit hrs he is expected to get on base
by Michael McAuley on Aug 25, 2011 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions
i disagree
He is expected to hit 10-15 HR for sure, maybe a bit more. It will be a big disappointment if he ends up being a 5 HR guy, unless he exceeds his projection in other areas to compensate.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions
He’s streaky, yeah. But as you said, he’s still pretty young. I’d like too see how he does in Lancaster before I make too many judgements.
Santana with a dinger tonight, too. That’s his 4th one in a week.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 25, 2011 8:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
awesome to see him start off so hot
always good when the good prospects do well. seems like with the astros, the lesser prospects are the ones that do well, while the top ones have struggled.
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 25, 2011 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions
That seems like the case lately. Guys like Martinez and Altuve had breakouts the past couple seasons, while our recent early draft picks have scuffled.
