Astros Minor League Recap

I was supposed to write the recap yesterday morning until I woke up to my internet not working!  But, I'm back now and will be covering the minors again for the remaining few weeks of the season.  I have to send a big thanks to David and Josh for covering for me while I was gone (and my internet not working), I really appreciate it and I definitely enjoyed seeing my family.

There's a little player movement I need to catch you up on.  As I'm sure most of you know, George Springer spent about a week in Kissimmee at the GCL Astros facility and traveled to Tri-City yesterday.  Supposedly, he'll train for a few more days before he actually gets in the line-up.  Also leaving the GCL is Brad Dydalewicz, who will be leaving for Lexington today.  His stats weren't good in the GCL with his walks still too high, but he has always been a high walk guy.  While Tri-City gained Springer, they lost Tommy Shirley.  Shirley is also joining Lexington today.  I haven't seen any corresponding moves to make room for them in Lexington.

The big performance last night came from the one we call ObieHockey in Corpus.  He turned in his most definite best start in the Astros organization and will have to continue to do so to get me to rank him higher.  As many of you probably know, I'm much higher on Clemens than Obie, but I also feel Obie has a better floor.

Van Hekken had a rough outing yesterday. I’m sure I missed the news, but where did Chase Davidson disappear to. Haven’t seen him listed in awhile.

Great start by Oberhertzer, maybe he can build off of it.

Also decent start from Cisnero, however I think that’s the first time that I saw him end up upside down on his GO/FO ratio.

by conroestro on Aug 24, 2011 9:17 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Davidson is on the DL, I think he only appeared in one or two games in Tri-City.

Cisnero has his nights where he has more flyouts than groundouts every now and then, not to the extreme of last night though. He had to battle in the second or third inning, so the fact he lasted as long as he did is encouraging.

Obie is nearly striking out 9 per 9 IP. It’s raised his season K% up to 7 per 9.

by Subber10 on Aug 24, 2011 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

Good to see some wins.

The demotion to AAA has not treated Chris Johnson very well. I would’ve predicted him struggling judging from his comments after he heard the news.

Great night by Obie. Luckily it looks like the farm has gotten to the point that guys can be developed slowly. Obie can spend a whole season in AAA next year with no pressure. My boy Brandon Wikoff with a homer last night! Is it totally asinine for me to expect a resurgence from Gaston and Steele next year?

Alex Todd continuing to hit; anyone have any insight into his upside? Greenwalt has handled getting bumped back down to Lancaster and converted into a reliever pretty well. Would like to see more XBHs from Singleton but at least he’s hitting and walking.

Attaboy Telvin Nash. Santana staying hot.

I wonder if Johnson’s defense is adequate for 2B? His apparent power would look much better there than at 1B.

Lots of good things in Greeneville. I keep telling y’all, look out for Jordan Scott. Magee sure came out of nowhere, but it’s always good to see middle infielders providing some offense. Darwin Rivera is always doing pretty well lately.

Interesting about the roster moves. Would’ve thought they might promote Shirley or someone else to Lancaster instead of Lexington given how bad the back of Lan’s rotation has been. I’m surprised Dydalewicz has been promoted back up; I thought he was on the verge of release. Hopefully he gets it back and gets on the right track again; he’s still young enough to make it happen.

by Snake Diggity on Aug 24, 2011 10:24 AM CDT reply actions

Looking at Chris Johnsons numbers I honestly think he needs to be released. Parades has been so much better just defensivly its not even funny.

by Nado2036 on Aug 24, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know alot about Matt Mangini

But the mariners released him yesterday. He posted .336/.399/.409 at triple A this season. Should the astros take a chance on him to create some depth at 3rd for next year?

by lawson3 on Aug 24, 2011 10:27 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Just looked him up

He is 24 and has knocked the cover off the ball the last two seasons. Says he plays 1B and 3B. Looks better than CJ

by Nado2036 on Aug 24, 2011 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

He was a 1st round pick in 07 I would take a shot

by Nado2036 on Aug 24, 2011 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

lol. better than CJ.

That was exactly my thought and reason for posting that question.

by lawson3 on Aug 24, 2011 10:37 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I was a CJ guy at the start of the season but his defense just turned me sour quick

I think also that Mills mishandled this team from top to bottom this year and maybe thats one of the reasons that CJ was pissed when he was sent down.

by Nado2036 on Aug 24, 2011 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

hit 18 HRs last year in trip A

Struggled with injuries this year. Only 58 games.

by lawson3 on Aug 24, 2011 10:35 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Wonder why they released him?? Are they all in with Kyle Seager at 3rd? With the lack of productive 3rd basemen around the league, I can’t believe a team would release a 24 year old 3rd baseman with a pulse.

by Brad E on Aug 24, 2011 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Not only a pulse but a former No 1 pick that has been hammering the ball the last two years

by Nado2036 on Aug 24, 2011 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

i think he will be on the DL the rest of the season

Bc of a concussion. But as for next season he should be back. But a guy who already made it through the ranks and is at triple A, it just seems like no brainer for the astros to at least look into it, especially with the production from 3rd this year.

by lawson3 on Aug 24, 2011 11:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Would be nice you could have

Schuck, Shafer, Bogey, Marinez, Paredes for OF

Lee, Altuve, Barmes, Downs, Wallace, Paredes, Mangini, for INF
Would make the team very versatile

Top 100

So, other than Springer, Cosart, and Singleton, which other farmstros get top 100 love this offseason? My list of maybes would include Villar, Clemens, Wates, Nash, DeShields, Santana, Folty, Armstrong, Ovando, Hallock, Tropeano, Oberholtzer, and Houser. Although, I think only Villar and Clemens have any realistic shot, I think the others could slip in on a list or 2 as sleeper reaches in 80-100 range.

With at least 3 in the top 100, it’d be hard to imagine the farm system being thought of as below average moving forward.

by Snake Diggity on Aug 24, 2011 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

I doubt anyone else makes it aside from the top 3. Villar might get some love from BA again for his tools and closeness to majors. But thats it. Everyone else is B- at best, and Villar is a B-/C+ in my book, so he still doesn’t make it for me.

by Subber10 on Aug 24, 2011 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Pretty crazy list of names there

Hallock and Tropeano wouldn’t be in most top 1000 lists. I’m 100% serious about that. But they are certainly borderline top 1000, maybe even top 750 for some. Nash might make some top 500 lists, but not most I’d imagine (if people regularly made lists that long). The other guys could easily be in a bunch of top 250 lists, with Folty, Ovando, and Villar sneaking into some top 150 lists. Villar has the best chance because of BA’s affinity for him. Clemens has no real chance in my mind, and it would be quite surprising to see him on many HM lists that might go up to 150.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree with you there, except that the criteria for those lists is varied and fairly inconsistent. List creators who value primarily upside might include guys like Armstrong, Ovando, Santana, etc. Those that value statistical performance (especially recent statistical performance) might be inclined to take a flier on a Hallock or Clemens type of prospect. My takeaway from that is that the difference between the 1000th ranked prospect and the 150th really isn’t nearly as significant as one would think.

by Snake Diggity on Aug 24, 2011 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, if you’re talking only the most widely recognized/quoted listmakers, I’d totally agree that the list of potential farmhands that have a chance is much much smaller (the 3 sure things plus Ovando, Folty, Villar, and Clemens).

by Snake Diggity on Aug 24, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say Santana and maybe Nash have good shots at cracking the top 100.

I’d lean towards Santana because his ceiling is insanely high.

But, I think Springer, Singleton, and Cosart will make the top 100. Nobody else.

Nash? As in Telvin?

My understanding is that one tool guys don’t make the top 100 until that one tool just explodes like Paul Goldschimdt. Nash isn’t even in the Astros top 10 IMO.

by Raidas77 on Aug 24, 2011 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

No, he isn't a top 10 Astros prospect

According to me anyway. I like him quite a bit, and he should be a top 20 Astros prospect for sure, with a case to made for top 15. No real case for top 10 at this point.

Timmy mentioned in the podcast how well Towles has been hitting

surprised me. Mentally though, I think he’s just not cut out for the big leagues.

by AstroB on Aug 24, 2011 10:39 AM CDT reply actions

Towles always hits well in the minors. Then he gets called up and forgets everything and struggles to hit .200

by Astrofan on Aug 24, 2011 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I’d think he’d have at least one more year after this one. He’s still a young lefty with a decent fastball. He just needs to be able to repeat his delivery (which is apparently easier said than done).

I would love Chad Bettis

I’ve heard his name mentioned a few times in Rockies trade rumors. Why would they want to trade that guy. Seems like he’s got a power arm and huge upside.

by conroestro on Aug 24, 2011 1:22 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He's on the brink right now

Having a great season in Hi-A Modesto, but then again college pitchers should cruise through A ball.

If he performs with similar results in AA, then we have a top of rotation guy on our hands. Right now, it’s uncertain. If we can get Wandy for Bettis, you guys get a very good pitching prospect and we get the finished product for our window.

As weird as it sounds, the Ubaldo trade gave us plenty of pitching depth and only limited rotation spots. Players like Friedrich, Betttis, Cabrera all become assets for trade just as much as they become parts of the future rotation.

i think that the astros if the deal goes down,

will get Aaron Cook. His contract is up after this year and they need a starter to replace Wandy. With money and taking back cook i think that they might be able to get at least on good prospect as well as a low A player with “some” upside.

as much as I dislike Rosenthal

his Hammel + prospect idea yesterday has some weight. Instead of just eating salary, we trade you Hammel (who has been a good starter until his recent struggles) and a prospect for Wandy.

We reduce the payroll obligation and free up rotation logjams.

I'd honestly just swap Rosario for Wandy rather than keeping Wandy.

I know we have Castro, but he has no bat. And while he has great defensive talent, Rosario is also a good defender, but his bat is significantly better.

Even though we have quite a few legitimate power hitters in the farmsystem,

we gotta add Rosario. He’s a lock to be in the top 50 entering next year.

As stupid as it sounds

If Wandy pitches well today, i could see the Rock putting him out there. D.O.D has shown that if they are in it he will go after people. If they win today and the D backs lose they will be 5 games back. Dont forget what they have done in the past.

How do you guys think this line up looks

This is of course for the future. How competitive do you guys think we could be with that line up?

1: Singleton/Wallace/Hinze/Davidson
2: Altuve/DDJr.
3: Parades
SS: Villar/Mier
C: Castro/Wallace/Heath
RF: Santana/Springer/Ovando
CF: Springer/Schafer/DDJr.
LF: Martinez

P1: Norris
P2: Cosart
P3: Lyles
P4: Folty
P5: Clemens/Ober/Harrell/whoever

My prefered lineup:
Villar
Altuve
Singleton
Martinez
Springer
Santana
Parades
Castro
P

Just looking at it there would be alot of power with those players.

by Macerate on Aug 24, 2011 3:24 PM CDT reply actions

stop.

stop putting villar in the 1-hole. people keep doing that. IF he makes the majors, he’ll likely be a .300 OBP type with some pop. probably a #8 hitter. as a minor disagreement, ovando should probably be penciled into that long term lineup instead of santana. i could see either way, but ovando is the better prospect by a noticeable margin in my opinion.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Currently, I believe that Santana is the better of the two, and its not really close. Santana is playing fairly well in Low A at age 18, while Ovando has yet to show much in short season ball.

Not to mention that Santana was the #9 prospect in Philly’s loaded system…Ovando cracked our top 10, but its not a big deal to be a top 10 guy in crappy farm system.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 24, 2011 5:05 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Ovando has the higher upside

And while he’s had a smaller sample, he’s been much better.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I have Ovando at #5 in our system

But I could see a good argument for #4 as well. Right now Santana I have at #11, though I did give him a B-, which people seem to think is too aggressive for someone who can stop striking out. I am giving him a bigger break than I give Nash, because he’s younger, but it is REALLY concerning.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

We can agree to disagree, but I wouldn’t be surprised if BA or Sickels ranked Santana ahead of Ovando next season.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 24, 2011 5:36 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn't be shocked necessarily

But it will be a bad sign for our system. Because Santana’s value is pretty much known. A guy with good upside that is REALLY struggling with K-rate. Just can’t be considered a top 200 type prospect right now. But Ovando seems like one to me…maybe BA thinks little of Ovando right now, but that is a bad sign, not a good one.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

in other words...

If BA is looking at both young players in a pessimistic light, Santana might be ranked ahead of Ovando. If BA is looking at both players in a neutral or optimistic light, then Ovando will certainly be ranked ahead of Santana.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 24, 2011 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I like santana more right now as well, he is showing some power. If singleton is going to be our ryan howard then he should be hitting cleanup. You should probably do one with a DH spot since it looks like we will have one by time this all shakes out.

by lawson3 on Aug 24, 2011 4:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Not sure if you’re lineup is a projected roster, but if that was the case, you’d have to take off Heath and one of the RF.

That works as good as any other projection I’ve seen; it’d be more rational as a 2015 lineup rather than 2013.

Agree with the other poster, Villar is probably a bottom of the order guy. I’d go:

Schafer/Shuck
Altuve
Springer/Bourgeois
Singleton
Martinez
Paredes/Downs
Castro/Wallace
Villar/Mier

Rotation: Cosart, Norris, Lyles, Folty, Clemens
Bullpen: Aneury, Ober, Wright, F Rod, Lopez, Carpenter, Melancon

Everyone in that group could be in Houston by 2013; most of them already are.

by Snake Diggity on Aug 24, 2011 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

So what's the story with Neiko Johnson?

I know there hasn’t been any power numbers beyond tonight’s homer, but that walk rate makes me feel all fuzzy inside. Anybody got a good scouting report?
