Houston Astros Minor League Recap

DENVER, CO - AUGUST 22: Matt Downs #16 of the Houston Astros trots around the bases after hitting a three-run home run in the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on August 22, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. So boys and girls, this is the last day before Brooks returns, and (gasp) George Springer debuts. Or rather he might debut tonight. He will arrive in Troy this afternoon, but whether he will be in the starting lineup, is something yet to be announced. Let's have a quick gander at what our recent first round picks have done in short-season ball after being drafted.

Delino DeShields went .313/.356/.433 in 16 Greeneville games, swiping five bases after a couple of games in the Gulf Coast League. Jiovanni Mier, in signficantly more playing time in the Appalachian League posted an .864 OPS and wowed scouts enough to debut at #74 on Baseball America's prospect list. Jason Castro, the year before like Springer started in Tri-City, showing a keen eye (13.6% BB rate). The catcher was #51 prior to the 2009 season.

This brings me to my point, which is, will Springer sneak into Baseball America's top 100 prospect list for 2012, and in your opinion does he deserve to? Right after the draft I remember Keith Law being asked what draftees would make it into his top 100 and Springer was not one mentioned. Should we care if he isn't? How much should we read into prospect lists? Does it say anything about Springer's talent if he is not there, or does it speak more about how much pro-ball he has to play until he reaches the majors? Post your thoughts below.

More to follow after the jump.

Springer

I think he could sneak in to the back end of a top 100 list, however with a good season next year I could easily see him in the top 40 with his 5 tool ability

Springer will definitely be a top 100 prospect. I see him in the 50 to 60 range, maybe higher.

Brandon Wikoff

= infield version of J.B. Shuck?

thats exactly what I said a cpl days ago, hes got an approach.

If i were Arnold Rothstein id pay Ryan Braun all the money he
wants to stop going on homer streaks against the poor Astros....

am i the only one?

As to whether Springer's ranking matters

Low rankings don’t seem to have slowed down Altuve, J.D., etc.

Springer

Law said (last week, I think) that he’d probably have 15-20 players from the ‘11 draft in his top 100. Given that he ranked Springer #16 among eligible players before the draft, I’d expect him to be on the back end of the top 100, or maybe one of the first players left off.

Lucas Harrell deserves an opportunity to show what he has at the major league level.

I agree he’s been pretty solid in AAA since we got him from the white sox. I think he will be up soon

Santana

Domingo with another home run last night. The guy is 6 foot 5, 200 lbs and still growing. He could be 6’6 or 6’7 when all is said and done, and if he ever taps into his raw power he could be a monster.

by Stupendous Man on Aug 23, 2011 11:43 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah when he starts putting on some weight thats when we could truly see some solid power. He’s like a pole right now

Righthanded Adam Dunn? Or is that just Mark Reynolds?

by Raidas77 on Aug 23, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Way better potential than Reynolds due to his defensive potential. I don’t think he will have the raw power of Dunn or Reynolds but I don’t think he will strikeout like them either. Scouts put his top potential a vladimir gurerro

strange thought

I have not given up on delino jr or mier, but looking at their production this season maybe the Appalachian league isn’t the best way to measure a player.

Wandy claimed by the Rockies

Would love a “Wandy + $8.5M for LHP Rex Brothers, C Jordan Pacheco, and SS Hector Gomez”.

by Snake Diggity on Aug 23, 2011 4:05 PM CDT reply actions

I agree, and I’m ok with that, but I’d also love to get some more prospects and free up more 2013 payroll.

Kevin Goldstein suggested

Springer will make his top 100 in the offseason.

by AstroB on Aug 23, 2011 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

Springer should be in the top 50

I’m higher on him than most national guys and have been since before the draft though, more likely he’ll wind up as a guy in the 51-90 range on most lists.

I’ll be surprised at each list I see where he’s not in the top 100, though.
