Big Inning Dooms Wandy, Astros Lose 5-1

Amidst all of the constant trade rumors throughout last week, Wandy Rodriguez remained an Astro. I was very pleased with his start tonight... until the fifth inning. Wandy was dealing through the first four frames, but he quickly unraveled after that, and the Reds made him pay. 

Edgar Renteria's grand slam proved to be the difference, and we couldn't get anything going against Homer Bailey. The local product from La Grange threw eight solid innings, and no one could record a multi-hit performance.

Luis Durango's first hit with the Astros was a RBI single in the fifth, and Jimmy Paredes also singled in his first at-bat tonight.

Carlos Lee's lack of hustle prevented a run in the eighth, but what else is new?

Unfortunately we could see a lot of games like this in the near future with our weak lineup, but there's always a silver lining. Right?

Jarred Cosart threw a gem in his debut with Corpus Christi tonight (6 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts), and Jonathan Singleton is batting .500 through two games so far with Lancaster. Small samples aside, this immediate return looks promising.

I think he will start to come around, in pregame show he said hes still trying to slow everything down. I think he’ll be very solid major leaguer for sure.

i liked bourgeios theyre for now. jd extends lineup and when he comes around itll make the lineup a bit better with him batting 5th.

i have always been a diehard fan of astros, and i used to be a fan of cards except when we were playing them and when they were in first, when they won 04 NLCS i cried and called them the deadbirds.

That pitch was no way intentional it was 1st and 3rd with no outs. Plus saito would never do that, he takes to much pride in his game. Anyway la russa took motte out after he hit braun, he was pissed. Motte didnt want to hit braun, you could tell, he was shaking his head and stuff after he threw 2 balls at braun. I blame it all on molina.

He very well could but SF tried that earlier this season and his #'s were horrible

thats why they moved back to being a SP. He may not have the mind set just yet to make that transition

I thought I read somewhere that he was about 86 with the fastball and touching 88 occasionally. That makes me feel better if he sits at 88 and touches 91 or 92

We need to ask our resident OKC insider and have them keep an

eye on Keuchel up there to see what Hooten has doing after a couple of starts and to see where is velocity is after some time there too.

Stadium guns usually run 1-2mph hot

So if he’s sitting around 88mph and occasionally touching the low 90s according to the stadium gun that means he probably is around 86-87mph typically.

92-94mph coming into the draft

But I almost expect his velocity to have dropped a tick as a cold weather HS arm transitioning to pro ball. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the gun was hot and he was sitting closer to 91

his last start that I caught on MiLB the announcers

said that he started off hitting 95-96 and that in the 5th inning he was still hitting 95. so I dont know if their gun is fast or not but it sure sounds good

Not to keep harping on it, but from those that have watched him HOW high do y’all guesstimate that Keuchel can dial it up when he needs to?

Tops at 92’ish maybe?…I don’t know. I’ve only watch him in college.(He was NAILS). Thats why I’m asking.

I know that velocity isn’t everything or maybe even the most important thing, I’m just wondering how fast he can dial it up?

He has good location and control but struggles with both

at times. All his pitches could use some polishing at this stage which is normal. You can def see that he is not too far off from putting it together. HE has def gotten better as the season has gone on.

Robinson has been working on his mechanics and has hit 94 a few times. That velocity and recently, he’s been performing pretty well at times. I think Buchanan is a safer bet to make the majors because of his GB tendencies, but probably in a reliever role. I think Robinson has the better ceiling but lower floor.

Tropeano is a lot like Lyles, average velocity with a great changeup and developing curve. Real sleeper type, could be a lot like Lyles. Hallock is going to be 23 in a few days and has shown some good performances. But, with his age I’m skeptical at this point.

He has a chance to have lyles type velocity. Thats probably where he is sitting right now with the adjustment to pitching more often. End of next year I can see him being 89-90.

Not always, body type, body maturity, mechanics all play a factor. Given Tropes tall lanky build, he’s a candidate to add a little.

It gets very blurry after Cosart Folty for me. A few guys who could be B- but more likely really nice C+. After that, there are tons of C+ guys who have potential to really move up given better performance as they move up.

I think you're probably a little too high on Houser

Given he hasn’t even pitched in Greeneville yet. I would still put Oberholtzer above him as a BoR arm with MoR potential. For me it’s B- down through Oberholtzer then you get into C/C+ range. (I like Keuchel but let’s face it his ceiling is BoR.)

I am probably higher than most on Houser, I really like the frame and I love the determination and drive the kid has. I’ve heard that he’s low to mid 90s right now in pro ball with a good curve. A lot of it is just gut feeling really.

Since he wasn’t all that highly rated coming into the draft (it means he has more to prove). On the plus side it was a very deep draft.

I think it was a factor of his region. He was in a division lower than the Bundy/Bradly group and they were all from within a 30 minute radius of each other. So, when scouts flocked to the area for chances to scout, they usually pitched the same night. Where would you go as a scout? Bundy/Bradley every time, especially if you are thinking of taking one very early in the draft, you want to watch them as much as possible.

BoR is looking very likely for Keuchel, I still hold out hope for ceiling of #3 but its such a small chance is negligible.

The more I read, I’ve switched who I like better between Ob and Clemens. Body type kind of pulls him down I think and puts Clemens higher for me.

I kind of think Ob and Clemens are B's who were rated C+'s because they were in a loaded Braves system.

Anyways, I’m glad Wade pulled the trigger. Sure I would have liked the other guys. However, the guuys we got are exactly what the system needed. I think Wren was probably saying, look Oakland will take these guys for Crisp..I’m NOT giving you the guys you want so you can take these guys or I’ll go with Oakland.

My thoughts

Yeah I think they’re a bit underrated because of pitching in the loaded Braves system, but I think straight B is going a little too far. I have a hard time giving a straight B to any pitcher with a middle rotation ceiling unless I feel very confident that they can reach it (and I think Oberholtzer is more likely a no. 4 and Clemens more likely a late inning relief arm).

These aren't quite right to me. My rankings:

1. Cosart – Easily our best pitching prospect. He and Lyles will be our future #1 and #2.

2. Oberholtzer – Has 3 good pitches. Should be a #3 or #4.

3. Keuchel – Mr. Consistency should be our #4 or #5 of the future.

4. Folty – Has been up and down this year, but that may be because he’s been asked to work on one specific thing, so he could just be throwing fastballs every pitch in order to improve his command. We’ll see how legitimate he is once he gets to Corpus Christi.

5. Clemens – Has a fairly high ceiling, but position is unknown right now. Could be a starter, could be a closer-type. He’s got great stuff, but he’s still pretty raw.

6. Houser – Has a high ceiling, but is unproven. So far so good, though.

7. Sosa – Was once considered a #1 or #2. Things have obviously gone wrong, but he’s still got some talent. Hopefully a change of scenery gets him back on track.

8. Zeid – Has the best slider in the minors. If he can solidify his other stuff, he could be our closer or set-up man of the future.

9. Tropeano – Has been lights out in Tri-City. Could figure into our future rotation.

10. Stoffel – If he can consistently command his fastball, he should be a reliable pitcher from the bullpen.

I’m like you, I’m high on Oberholtzer. He’s 21 with decent velocity, and he’s having success (especially recently) in his first season in AA. I think he could easily out preform Clemens from this point forward.

That reasoning is false. Hitters who are interviewed about it say that it get overblown. You have to make adjustments there. You still have to refine your approach, still have to work on your swing. It’s not about succeeding in numbers, the coaches still are going to make you work.

I used to think on the same line as you guys. But, I have gotten a chance to talk with a few people associated with the league and I’ve come to see a lot of positives about the Cal League and Lancaster that are very strong positives and unique challenges that are good for the prospects.

Surprisingly, MLB did a study and the Cal league isn’t even the most offensive league.

Here's my top 10 position prospects, let me know what you guys think:

1. Jonathan Singleton – The obvious choice. Singleton has All-Star potential. Very patient hitter with great power potential. Dangerous combination.

2. Jonathan Villar – It’s tough to put him at #2, but he’s got gold glove defensive potential, and he’s got some pop. He’s made some good progress over the past two weeks. Not striking out as much, walking a bit more, but most of all, getting hits. I think another year at CC should do it for him. Hopefully he’ll be ready by 2013.

3. Kody Hinze – Much like Singleton, Hinze is patient hitter with good power potential. He’s not on the same level as Singleton in terms of power potential, but he could be a 20-30 HR guy who gets on base quite a bit. He wasn’t drafted very high, but he’s putting up big numbers.

4. Austin Wates – Has been very consistent at Lancaster. He gets on base, he hits doubles, and he steals bases. Should be a solid backup OF if everything goes wrong for him.

5. Telvin Nash – This is probably too high for most others on this board, but Nash is one of my favorite prospects. He’s got great power potential. While he’s been walking at a high rate this year, his Ks are high. If he can fix that, he should become one of our top prospects.

6. Delino DeShields Jr. – Started off the year very slowly, but he’s bounced back. BA has gone from .200 to around .230 in a 2 week time span. He’s also made some big progress on stealing bases. I think he’s 13 for his last 16 attempts. He’s got the speed, but he’s got to improve his technique. He’s also got power potential. Has hit 6 HRs this year, and has the potential to hit far more. K rate is alarmingly high, but he’s only 18.

7. Ariel Ovando – Ovando is unproven, but I think he’s got the highest ceiling of anyone in the farmsystem. Has got some serious bat speed and power potential. Once he proves himself at Lexington and Lancaster, he’ll become our top prospect. That’s an if though. No guarantees at this point in his career. So far, he’s been pretty good at Greeneville.

8. Chris Wallace – Wallace is an interesting prospect. He’s got some power potential, but his defense looks pretty poor so far at CC. Next year will decide if he’s legitimate enough. While he’s made big strides this year, I’m not quite sold on him. Defense needs a lot of work.

9. Jio Mier – Looks like a bust from my point of view, but he’s still got time to turn it around.

10. Adam Bailey – Has been tearing it up this year. We’ll see how he does against legitimate pitching in the Texas League.

Springer will instantly shoot up to the top 5, but he’s not signed. He’s expected to sign, but I still have my concerns.

Of course any time you promoted two top 100 prospects it’s going to weaken your depth there. I would not put Hinze nearly that high also, he should be about 8th on this list behind Ovando. 1B only guy having a career year while being old for his level requires a lot of caution. Telvin Nash is too high as well. It’s tempting to overrate the pure hitters who statistically mash but you really have to pay attention to defensive tools/upside as well.

Wallace's defense isnt that bad, He's been the victim of some bad pitching since he got here

to Corpus. Most of it from the pen. He calls a rather good game even while hes working with young raw pitchers. Defense does need some work but not as much as what youre stating.

He’s not a big risk in Lancaster. But skipping him would be too aggressive. Repeat half of the season and re-evaluate is what I would do.

Bushue is very interesting. Velocity is 85-87 sometimes, 87-90, 89-91 others. Curve has very good potential. It seems like the issue (other than injury) is consistency, changeup, fastball location. He controls his stuff (gets it in the zone), but doesn’t command it I think, which is why you see lots of HR’s, he leaves it too high in the zone and his stuff isn’t good enough to do that.

Scouting reports are very positive

But i think a lot depends on how he looks in spring training next year. He is supposedly very thin right now. If he comes into ST with a lot more bulk and better consistency with his breaking ball I could see him moving up to Corpus Christi.

That’s what I was thinking too. Could potentialy be an interesting rotation in Lexington to start the season. Potential candidates: Folty, houser, hallock, velasquez, trope, bushue, and few more I can’t think of off the top of my head

The M’s acquired Chance Ruffin to complete their Doug Fister trade, as the PTBNL. That gives me more hope about the PTBNL in the Pence trade. Ruffin is a very good relief prospect who was taken in the supplemental first round last year.

The way I understand the ptbnl rule is that you can’t trade a player until one year after he signs out of the draft. So They won’t be able to announce until it’s the one year anniversary of the player signing, so I figure the closer it gets to august 15 the better the guy could be if it was an overslot signing

Thats one reason. They also formulate lists for organizations can get more time to scout and choose from the list. They have six months in those cases. This is probably one of those instances since it is supposedly a non impact prospect.

When Oswalt eventually retires, I hope that he does one of those “1 Day contracts”(If they even do that in baseball so he can sign/retire as an Astro.

A lot better than currently, but those players don’t exactly shout “playoff team”. It’s a good group of young players, but not one of the pitchers have really ace stuff other than Cosart, which is disappointing. I think Houser has a chance to be an ace, but he’s pretty far away from pitching in the majors. Vincent Velasquez could also be an ace in my eyes as well, but the further away a player is from the majors, the less predictable they are.

4 years from now we might be seeing some serious progress in working our way to a playoff team once again with our high-upside pitchers making it to the majors by then. And also by then we might have amassed 2 1st overall picks, possibly including Lance McCullers who along with Cosart, Houser, Folty, & Velasquez could make a deadly rotation in the future. That along with Singleton, and some other power hitters would make this team a contender once again.

lotta ifs in there though.. he is an ace if he fully develops

and he is only 3-4 years away from the majors IF he develops enough to make it at all.

Besides most of the stuff I have read on him suggested that he had a #2 ceiling.

I think that it would be sweet sweet sweet if Folty develops into a True ACE pitcher. It ought to be exciting and watch to see how he develops.

For the record, I think that he can add some velo to his fastball as he develops/fills out his frame. Just my opinion…

I don’t think Houser does.

Don’t forget Bud Norris. He’ll be around what, 4-5 more years? I think he could develop into an ace. More likely a number two guy though.

is that our front office realizes that we are trying to increase our “total value” and to do so we need to look at every “asset” as being a means to that end and not an end unto themselves.

I guess my whole thing is

we as fans can fall in love with players… and we can get overly optimistic… and we can think that the the time is now.

Our front office though cannot if we want any kind of sustainable success and championship hopes. They have to look objectivley at every player and every prospect as assets and decide what the best use of those assets is to not only improve the club now but to keep the organizational strength improving now and in the future. By future I mean indefinate future too… I dont want to reach a point where we get back to the upper echelon by sacrificing our farm, I want a system that flows a river of talent for as long as we can conceivably keep it running, and getting that river to a sustainable level could take 5-7 years easily.

I think we see another season similar

to this one and then start playing for .500 in 2013 and improving each year. Of course once Lee’s off the payroll anything is possible.

We arent in need of a college player. This franchise wont be ready to

compete until 2014 at the earliest. The Astros “nucleus” are all 24 and younger. There is no need to select and rush any college player.

Yeah.

I would have to see a major improvement from his season last year to consider getting him. There are so many unknowns about high school pitchers and their development is so early that it’s kinda like selecting a little league player in a draft. The reason why players don’t get drafted & go to the big leagues is because they have things they need to work on. And if they can’t fix current problems, they can’t be a major leaguer.

Would the Astros be willing to take that risk even with everything else on the table? Premium pitchers don’t grow on trees, but their bust rate is pretty high. Luckily there is another year to evaluate talent.

To my knowledge I don’t believe there has been a #1 overall pick that hasn’t signed. It would send a horrible message to the fans, organization etc and would be an absolute nightmare to deal with if you didn’t sign him

Well it would be unlikely with hard slotting... if they cannot go higher than #1

Or make significantly more than you are offering then they are likely to sign.

Now the scary part is with hard slotting we are likely to lose not only the type A/B compensation system but also the unsigned draft pick compensation system.

Meaning if you fail to sign your first round pick… you are SOL, no free pick for you.

Not a fan of McCullers, looks super duper injury prone and uses max effort. Also a highschool rhp has never been taken #1 overall before so history is working against it

We ought to be able to get the best of both worlds. Shouldn’t have to choose. Of course maybe this is a weak enough draft that it comes down to that, but I doubt it.

Nice quote and true, just me personally i value a 5 tool hitter more so than a hs arm like him. I just feel both williams have more potential Now if there was someone with Strasbourg potential at the top of the draft I would take him in a heartbeat.

Of course there still is an entire year left of scouting so let’s hope 1 or 2 guys start separating themselves from the pack to make it a little easier lol my bets would be on mark Appel exploding this year, one of the Williams continue to blow up, and somebody we haven’t seen yet will make a strong run at the pick I believe

Well that’s because this was a rare draft because everyone was so good. You could legitimately argue 4 people could go for that top pick last year and any of them would be the no doubt #1 pick this year

Best case ceiling comps only, not likely outcomes. I’m sure you could plumb through a bunch of replacement level players and find their floors.

For Villar’s ceiling, how about Jose Hernandez with a bit less power, but more speed and better defense?

For Cosart’s best case ceiling, I’ll go with Josh Beckett.

Jose Reyes is a fantastic contact hitter. I can see Villar improving his strikeout rate, but he will never be a good hitter for average.

That seems overly optimistic on the average, HR

I can see 40 steals maybe, but I think .260 with 10 HR seems more realistic as a tip-top best case scenario (still a long way to go to get there). However a shortstop who can bat .260/.330/.370 with 40 stolen bases and gold glove defense is a valuable asset.

I think he'll have to cut down his stroke to lower the Ks

And even reach that .260 number. He swings for the fences too much, he needs to put the ball on the ground and use his speed. It’s an adjustment he’s going to have to make or he will probably be a total bust. Once he adjusts to tone down his swing, I can see him getting just above 10 HR for a handful of seasons in his prime.

He see more FB here in AA than he will at the ML level. Plus the secondary

pitches here generally are not as polished as those of ML pitchers

If you look up the career stats for Shawon Dunston who played for the

Cubs I think you will see Villar’s best comparison. Excellent range, excellent glove, +arm, with an avg bat for SS

I think his best case outcome could be a bit better than Dunston was overall. But that’s a good rough template for what he could become.

because they did not have a collection of high draft picks in consecutive years and they have kept both the major league club competitive and the organization producing.

Tampa has spent plenty of money, do not just pay attention to their MLB payroll

They have an academy in Venezuela, the Dominican, and Brazil … and they go over slot often in mid rounds..

Still you never know how the decisions will change with more money or less. Atlanta operates in a similar market and someone from their front office would theoretically have the same resources to work with here as they would there.

I mean the best game for a full front office feel was the old EA MVP baseball but even it had issues with trades and drafted players being ready to play day 1.
