Astros Minor League Recap
Alright, so I called that one or both of Henry Sosa and Dallas Keuchel would get promoted and Keuchel was! I said somebody would be released (I didn't want to call anyone out, but Hennessey was my guess) and that happened. There are still six starter in Corpus, and aside from one tweet from Stephen Goff and Lancaster's roster, Jarred Cosart is pitching in AA today. So, that makes seven starters!
I'm predicting more moves today! Personally, I think it makes too much sense for Cosart to stay in A+ ball since he had decent results in a pitchers league and with his stuff, he would be ok in Lancaster. If you count Robert Doran, who has been pitching out of the bullpen since returning from the DL, they have five starters. But, Doran could remain in the pen or Zachary Grimmett could go back to the pen despite showing some ability from the rotation.
I also think Erick Abreu is going to have a change in his role. Whether it's on another team, organization, or the bullpen. I would have thought that Jonnathan Aristil would be pushed to the pen but he started last night. Someone has to go to Lancaster or OkC. Ross Seaton, Paul Clemens, Brett Oberholtzer, Henry Sosa, Jarred Cosart, and apprently Aristil are all given rotation spots, its bound to happen.

Can we just call Brett Oberholtzer, Brett O?
It’s funny because nobody can spell his name right. I’m not even sure if I spelled his name right.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
when half the fanbase
could spell Meyers or Bourne correctly I doubt they can spell Oberheltzor correctly.

We need to call something because I just dont see us calling him BO
"Who's the fool, the fool or the fool who follows?" Obi Wan Kenobi
Erik Castro
Very intrigued by his power and OBP combo. Wasn’t he a 3B? Seems to DH all the time. Maybe he could take Paredes’ spot at CC?
Dan Adamson
Would like to see him promoted. He’s had a great year at Lexington. Great K/BB ratios and phenomenal SLG for a guy that isn’t a masher. He looks to be more of a gap power guy right now but still hits a few out with a good mix of doubles and triples. Great OBP as well!
He has shoulder surgery last year
That’s why he’s DH and playing 1B. I’m thinking he moves back to 3B next year in AA/AAA.

Lucas Harrell
I saw where he got ejected last night. Too pumped up I guess.
I hope Cosart’s game is on milb.tv tonight. I will have to check as soon as I’m done with this. Cosart is definitely my favorite pitcher in the minors now.
Singleton’s off to a good start.
by conroestro on Aug 2, 2011 9:40 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Harrell was ejected on a play at the plate.
I didn’t see it, but apparently he made the tag and it was a bad call. He was ejected immediately.
Chase Davidson
Has been awesome. Striking out a ton though. At least he is walking at a good rate as well.
K rate
is a very scary thing. walk rate (even an enormously high walk rate, which he doesn’t have) doesn’t mitigate K rate at low levels especially with older players. once you make it to the majors, k rate is definitely mitigated by walk rate quite a bit, as patient players are going to be in a lot of walk/strikeout counts and pitchers in the majors have pretty good out pitches, but in the minors, especially below AA ball, K rates over 25% are VERY scary (players really should be under 20% but that isn’t a must). Davidson is at 29% in ROOKIE BALL. Other prospects with scary K rates: Telvin Nash @ 29% in A ball, Mier @ 28% in high A (he was at 22.6 in low A ball where he spent most of his time this season), and Jonathan Villar @ ~27.5 % between A+ and AA.

Yeah, we see one of these every year it feels like
Older, roster filler player at Greeneville, puts up numbers behind an ugly strikeout rate… it’s better not to make too much of these guys.

Back in the days when I posted on the ESPN message boards I tried to warn people that Mitch Einertson’s Rk League K rate was worrisome, and received nothing but vitriol (it was the ESPN boards, of course).

Cosart
When do yal think he will get shut down this year? He threw only 71 innings last year and is already at 108 this year. I think anywhere from 130-150 innings sounds about right
by Astro Dave88 on Aug 2, 2011 9:59 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
The hooks have 33 games left
Doesn’t seem like they will have to shut him down too early, maybe have him skip one start. He could start 5 times and still be around 140 innings. Still a big jump from last year, it’ll be interesting to see what they do with him.
Cosart’s injury background could lead the Astros to be extra careful.
by clack on Aug 2, 2011 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Yes
I think that would be wise. I’d probably only give him two, maybe three more starts, to be honest.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Yeah I completely agree
but I cannot wait to see the article by Richard Justice or the tirade one of the local sports casters will throw… it will happen and we all know it.
Even if he finished the season in a 5 man rotation in Corpus, he’d probably only get 5 or at most 6 more starts, which is less than 40 innings.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Corpus go to a 6 man rotation to finish the year.
I suspect Cosart will finish around 130 innings.
by Snake Diggity on Aug 2, 2011 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions
6 man rotation.
Agreed. That makes the most sense for AA given innings limits and injuries.
I hope Shuck gets a September callup.
Somebody needs to do a detailed profile on Chris Wallace’s defense. A catcher who can hit 30 HRs in a minor league season is a very valuable prospect.
Would LOVE to see Meyer get hot to end the year. If he can finish in the .270 range, his defense and power should allow him to move up to Corpus to start next season. He’d be young for his league and might see his stock rise. Cisnero is a major sleeper. He’ll be totally ignored because of hte other pitching acquisitions, so there should be no pressure. He will likely be the 4th or 5th starter in Corpus next season.
Alaniz is another sleeper. Adamson needs to move up.
Hopefully Meredith gets hot.
Davidson needs to move up.
Had higher expectations for Grills than that. Ouch. Glad to see him in the rotation though.
Grills not really THAT bad
He gave up 4 hits…1 double, 3 singles. I didn’t see him pitch, but most likely they weren’t hitting him too hard. He did walk 2 in an inning and two-thirds, but that isn’t too horrible. The outs were all good ones. 3 Ks, 2 GO. Overall he has 20 K and 4 walks in 20 innings allowing 1 HR. I like him (another prospect I’d rather have than Wikoff).
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 2, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions
It’s very difficult to evaluate pitchers at this level. The defense behind them is terrible, field conditions are horrible, and the strikezone are the worst you will fin in the minors. Makes it very difficult to evaluate.

I wonder if Cosart got moved up to CC to help get him aclimated into a winning environment. Even though CC just lost three of its best hitters they still have the higher chance between them and Lancaster to give the new guys a win everyday. It wouldn’t be smart to bring a top guy over and put him on a crap team, might get him down on the organization.
Agree with the JB Shuck September call up comment. He’s been one of my favorite hitters all year and is finally coming back around.

Would like to these promotions:
Austin Wates to Corpus Christi
Telvin Nash to Lancaster (Bit early but I think he’s ready)
Chase Davidson to Tri-City
Kody Hinze to OKC (Know I’m going to get blasted for this)
Henry Sosa to OKC
Wates to CC has been long overdue. His production has been consistent. No reason to think he wouldn’t be ready for CC.
Nash has been walking quite a bit. His approach at the plate is fantastic, especially his 2 strike approach. Combine that with his great power numbers, and good enough BA (Around .280), I think he’s ready to go to a hitter’s league in the California League.
Davidson has struck out quite a bit, but he’s tearing up Greeneville.
Hinze hasn’t been at CC for awhile, but he’s still putting up big numbers and he’s still walking at a high rate. This move would be for 2 reasons: 1 is because he’s ready for OKC. The other would be to make some room for future call ups.
Sosa is 26, and 2 of his 3 starts have been dominant. See no reason to think he would struggle in AAA.
"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too
close kissin his!"- Sir Charles to Kenny Smith.
Koby Clemens isn't anything special.
Hinze might be.
Brett Wallace could legitimately block Hinze though.
I guess the only way Hinze could be called up is to Houston, not to OKC. I wouldn’t be against that if it were to happen. He’s got a great approach at the plate, and he walks at a high rate. Also add in the power that he brings (which we desperately need), and I think he’s got a legitimate shot at being called up this month. If Paredes can get called up, so can Hinze (IMO, Hinze’s more ready than Paredes).

Paredes
Looked really patient last night well until his last AB. I was impressed lets see if it lasts. I would like to get a look at Hinze as well as Keuchel, Sosa, Harrell at ML Level in September. Can Hinze play anywhere else besides 1B
I was also impressed by Paredes last night.
Like you said, he had a good approach at the plate, and he was patient.
Hinze is more ready because he’s walked and hit homeruns consistently.
Can he play anywhere else besides 1B? Doubt it.
I expect Keuchel and Sosa to get called up this month or next. J.A. Happ will hopefully be sent down.

What are they waiting for??
I am sure Jmike is a good guy but we have 4 young OFers on the team at this time that all need AB’s. He is not going to see the field anymore so at least let him sign with another team or whatever. Then that will open a spot for Hinze, Shuck, Delome
Brad Mills will not allow this.

He’s been walking a lot lately, but he’s also been striking out a ton! 32.7% in July (29.1% overall). I would not promote him this season. He’s only 20. Give him a chance to lower that horrific K rate in an age appropriate league, before pushing him forward. I don’t expect him to ever be anything but a high K guy, but his current rate is a big sign he isn’t ready to move on quite yet.

Abad completed his rehab and was optioned to OKC. I didn’t know that R-S was rehabbing.
by clack on Aug 2, 2011 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
They have. Abad has been acitivated and Hyphen had a rehab start in GCL recently.
I was told a list of names and it would be up to 3 of them. The list included Wolf, Fien, Perez, Arguello, Storey.
Arguello seems like a long shot to be released to me but its possible given that he’s being squeezed out by Wright (better expereince), Abad (same reason), Cedeno and Keuchel whom are younger and actual prospects.
Figgy seems to be safe, as well as Hyphen. Perez probably has a long leash since he was a 2nd round pick.
Wolf and Fein need to be 2 of the 3.
Not ready to see any of the others go just yet.

Confirmed: One of the pitchers is Casy Fien.
Jacob Goebbert promoted from Corpus.
Goebbert call-up is very interesting. They had essentially four guys to play OF with Shuck, Locke, DeLome, and Clemens LF/DH since Wallace and CJ will get 1b/3b time. CC now has three to play as well with Barnes, Steele, Gaston, and Van Ostrand in the Clemens type role for CC.
I doubt we’ll see any corresponding moves from Lancaster though. They only have 3 OFers and then Simunic. With Nash playing a lot of LF and with four OFers on the roster, there may be a move.
If I had a say,
Locke/Navarro would see the bench time. Move Clemens between 3B and LF…he only stands a chance to stick in the big leagues as a corner infielder/LF/DH anyways. Shuck has to play, and DeLome is starting to pick it up as well. Navarro is the only one that basically plays one position, and isn’t hitting the ball at all.
I would cut Navarro first, if given the chance. With CJ and Clemens, Navarro is more than expendable.
I really dont think there is any value in keeping Clemens on board. Unless we do actually go to the dark side.
I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the guys whose value has fallen moved to other position to try and rejuvenate them. Koby Clemens should be in a utility role in AAA playing LF, 3B, 1B, and mix him in once every 5 days at Catcher. Move Brett Wallace back to 3B. Let Brandon Barnes be the every day 2B in AA. Make Erik Castro the everyday 3B in AA.
by Snake Diggity on Aug 2, 2011 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Clemens needs to be released.
He’s not someone that you keep blocking better prospects.
Face it guys, they guy is never going to play in the Majors, ever. He’s not even as good as Chris Shelton.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 2, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Disagree slightly.
Clemens should not be cut yet, but be realistic about his ceiling. He still doesn’t hit a breaking ball well enough, and if he has another year like this one at Triple-A, than saying he should be cut is certainly a fair assesment.

I hope he signs but if he is having elbow tightness then are we really going to give him more than what we have already offered?
Nothing has been offered as far as I know. Armstrong doesn’t want to negotiate until after the Cape Cod season because he doesn’t want to sign and leave his team short a roster spot.
I would have to think with the numbers and the elbow he is not adding value
He is the High school guy?
No the Vandy guy. Tons of talent there. Scouting reports show he hav value with him sitting 94-96 in the Cape this summer.
He’s not adding value but it could be enough to offer him a solid deal and him take it for fear of more injuries that would push him farther back in the draft and with hard slotting looming, this could be his best bet.

Article ideas
I’m finishing up my semester friday and will have 3 weeks off (a few days I’m headed home to see my family in which depending on a few things, I might be able to catch the hooks game on the 19th in LR, not looking likely though). To pass the time I’m gonna try to put out a few articles on the minors/draft. One day I’ll ask for some specific topics ya’ll would want to see covered whether a specific player profiled, anything. I’ll take the ones I like best and try to put them out.
Don’t leave any here because I’ll give ya’ll the opportunity in a few days. Just be thinking about it for when it does come.

I don’t think he can, its just that he has to. They have a total of 8 position players not counting catchers. Kody Hinze 1B, Jose Vallejo 2B, Brandon Wikoff IF, Jonathan Villar SS, Van Ostrand 1B, Gaston OF, Steele OF, Barnes OF. One of them has to DH. Vallejo probably is DHing since he’s been injured a lot.
They have to bring somebody else in from Lancaster or this might be Navarro’s only chance to stay in the organization by being demoted to fill innings.

Video of another interesting HS arm Lucas Giolito. Mid 90’s fastball, perfect frame. Video doesn’t show much other than FB. Also Trey Williams is in it. He doesn’t take a hack at any pitches and K’s so not an impressive look at him, but you do see his mature physical frame.
I would hate to take a prep arm first overall
I’d even be leary of some of the college arms which have been named (Appel, Purke if healthy). Prefer a position player unless the pitcher is an absolute, Strasburg-type no brainer.

I second that. Take the big bat first then go get your prep/collegiate arms

MiLB has Jarred Cosart listed as starter for Hooks! Although, he’s still not listed in hooks roster nor is he in the transactions.
He's with the Hooks.
He tweeted two days ago that he was on his first bus trip with his new team. Didn’t say if it was with the Hooks, but the Hooks are on a road trip right now, and the Jethawks had a bus trip back to Lancaster last night.
He’s in CC.

The question comes from him being listed in Lancaster and Goff tweeting he was going to go to Lancaster becaue of the Braves deal. With the amount of pitchers in AA, it made sense.
yeah definately, maybe thats what they intended to do, but after sending cedeno and keuchel to AAA and releasing the players gh

So does Wates come up in Goebbert's place?

I thought no, but he may be now. They only have 3 OFers including wates, but andrew simunic has been getting a lot of time out there so he could keep in the same role, callup one of the of 4 lexington OFers and move Nash back to LF for the remainder of the season while Tyler Burnett starts at 1B.
I'd love to see Nash promoted to Lancaster.
Some people say he’s not ready, but I think he is.
Very mature approach at the plate.
But, in order for this to happen, Wates has to be promoted to CC first.

None of those 4 really deserve a call up…maybe you could promote Austin back up in hopes it would re-motivate him.
Honestly though, I don’t see the lack of talent behind Wates as being a good reason to hold him in Lancaster.
On last nights pregame show Wade said that Sosa's next could be in AAA

Farmstros has the scoop. Seaton goes tomorrow night followed by Ob and Clemens. That leaves one spot open, which is likely slated for Aristil. Sosa was supposed to start, but he’ll be in OkC apparently. Looks like Erick Abreu will be in the pen or released (he’s 27 or 28 so it won’t hurt my feelings).
Urckfitz has been reassigned to Lancaster

Wow
Yeah he brings the high heat.
No surprise he’s getting Tommy John though.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
The same Rubby ...
… that the Astros pounded for a 9th inning comeback back in the early summer! I don’t see enough movement on his pitches or deception in his delivery. Without those things he’s just serving up fast paced batting practice.

Henry Sosa is currently listed as inactive which lends credence to him being moved up
to OKC soon
