Astros Minor League Recap

HOUSTON - AUGUST 17: Pitcher Bud Norris #20 of the Houstonn Astros tips his hat down after giving up a homerun to Geovany Soto #18 the Chicago Cubs in the first inning at Minute Maid Park on August 17, 2011 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

With Brooks' absence over the next week, David and myself will have the bases covered for you. Apart from good wins for the Hooks and Redhawks, last night saw the Astros affiliates a bit thin on the ground for good pitching performances and offensive outbursts. Still there was plenty going on, with Jordan Schafer making his first rehab start in Oklahoma City, Domingo Santana making his second Lexington start, and the Legends rocking Stephen Strasburg for five early runs.

Behind a wondrous start by Erik Abreu the Hooks put up their third straight win, an incredible turnaround considering their 12 game losing streak, a streak that including three shutouts and 10 games where they scored three runs or less. If Ross Seaton has turned things around, he, Jarred Cosart, Brett Oberholtzer and Paul Clemens should lead them to a strong finish.

The other big story this week has been Joshua Magee's streak of 12 at bats with 12 hits, and he continued this rich vein of form by leading off last night's game with a solo home run. Shame about the three errors he committed for Greeneville. Alex Todd is putting together a nice week at Lancaster, while Kody Hinze and Austin Wates continue their stellar seasons.

While Brooks is away we may also see Jack Armstrong and George Springer debut later in the week, but in the meantime here are last night's lines after the jump.

Chase Davidson hasn't played since Aug 10

Hope he gets back in there as the days are winding down in the season. Would like to see what he can do.

With the additions of Springer and Santana, plus Davidson getting called up along with a healthy Nash, the low A offenses are suddenly pretty dangerous.

I like Lucas Harrell. I hope he gets all of Lyles’ starts when they shut him down.

How old is Joshua Magee?

Is he someone we should be excited about? Also I hope DDJ closes out the season strong.

Austin Wates continues to have a strong season and I think he’s one of those guys w/ no outstanding tool but solid ones across the board.

Teoscar Hernandez looks like a sleeper – power, discipline – liking him a lot.

Don’t know if you guys have seen it yet, but Minor League Ball has this years Top 20 Astros Prospects in Reveiw list up finally.

It’s kind of shocking how much better the farm system is now compared to a month ago.

Does anybody feel brave enough to venture a guess as to what Lexington and Lancaster’s rotation will look like next year.

I say that Velasquez, Houser, and possibly Armstrong as probable candidates at Lexington. Then Hallock, Tropeano, Dufek, possibly Bushier and Folty as Lancaster candidates. Chris Lee, Luis Ordosgoitti, and Francis Ramirez are also more options for Lexington.

by conroestro on Aug 18, 2011 9:17 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

I think folty may start the year in Lexington, but he could be one of the few pitchers to have decent success in Lancaster due to his hard sinker. Bushue I think would be a disaster in Lancaster personally. But I think to start the season Lexington could look like: folty, houser, Velasquez, chris lee, and a few others you mentioned

by Astro Dave88 on Aug 18, 2011 9:24 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree. The Lexington rotation would look solid.

by conroestro on Aug 18, 2011 10:08 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

My current guess for farm rotations next year:

AAA: Harrell, Clemens, Oberholtzer, Keuchel, Van Hekken
AA: Cosart, Cisnero, Seaton, Buchanan, Aristil
A+: Armstrong, Tropeano, Doran, Hallock, Dufek
A: Folty, Bushue, Alaniz, Shirley, Cotton
A-: Houser, Dydalewicz, Walter, and 2 draftees
Rk: Feliz, Lee, Grills, Ramirez, and Perdomo
GCL: Velasquez and 4 draftees

Happ, Perez, Figgy, and Aneury could end up in AAA depending on the big league roster offseason shakeups.
Robinson, Donovan, Greenwalt, or Grimmett may be in Corpus’ instead of Aristil. I’d like to see Hicks moved back to a starter’s role, since none of those names impress me for the 5th spot in Corpus.
Sogard, Quevedo, and Cruz could be in Lancaster’s rotation.
Minaya, Juri Perez, Houser, Dydalewicz, Walter, Ordosgoitti, Quezada, and a host of others could be in Lexington. Bushue, Folty, and Alaniz all might be in Lancaster.
Velasquez is an unknown, he could start anywhere between the GCL and Lexington.

If Velasquez is healthy I would be surprised that they wouldn’t start him in full season ball. Maybe though

by conroestro on Aug 18, 2011 1:50 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

What happened to Dydalwwicz?

Was he injured? I know he got absolutely torched in Lancaster, but I haven’t seen him in a while. Still has potential in my book.

by YohannDookeyblue on Aug 18, 2011 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Bullpen in GCL with sub-par results. Can’t seem to repeat his delivery.

by Subber10 on Aug 18, 2011 5:55 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He’s slowly been given time of and ratcheted down level by level. Essentially he is now in the GCL getting an inning every now and then. He’s continually gotten rocked, but I’m not sure if the issue is mental or physical (or both). Next season will probably be the end of the line.

Paul Clemens?

When you ask Carlos Lee what his favorite place to play is, and he anwsers with the words, anywhere with a Buffet. You know theirs a real problem.

by orangeblood kid on Aug 18, 2011 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

could be a clear spot in rotation come spring training

and Clemens/Oberholtzer/Keuchel may get the chance to fight for it.

Thank you for Sergio Escalona guys!

Im not expecting much from the young pitchers

A lot of them are reaching their career high in innings and are getting worn down. Good to see Cisnero getting K’s, Abreau had an awesome start but I always question the competition when I see these performances.

I get really excited when I look at all the potential in the systems starting rotations. I wonder if Velasquez will start off in the bullpen or in the rotation as he recovers? Probably will wind up in short season regardless.

by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 18, 2011 2:47 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

It's hard to tell where Velasquez will end up.

The Astros may keep him in Florida until TC gets up and running.
