Astros Minor League Recap
BOGEY!!!!!!!!!!! Was that not the most exciting play of the season? Of course it was! It was really fun to see all of the genuine excitement from all of the young guys, all the way to Sergio Escalona jumping around like he was on crack! It's moments like that make you realize how important a farm system is to a team. You have to be able to get those type of moments from guys for cheap, and not rely on "veterany" guys who are getting paid a couple million dollars (I'm looking at you Jason Michaels). It's when the farm guys provide those moments that really get the fan base excited, not the free agent role players. Yes, this is just one game, but it really signals where this organization is headed; youth and building through the farm. Now if we could just get Brad Mills to buy into that and start Bogey more instead of that Michaels guy.
Alright, with that said, I'm heading out of town today. I'm visiting my old roommate and his wife for a day and then I'm headed to Texas to see my family for the first time in a few months. I misread the Hooks schedule, and thought they were going to be in Little Rock this week and I was going to hit up a game, but they are home. So there went that plan. Had I gone a week earlier, I could have made it, but I had prior engagements that I couldn't reschedule. I'll probably be back Monday night, I'm not sure yet, so I won't have any recaps up until Tuesday-ish.

Singleton
Singleton has been walking less and striking out a ton since joining our organization. Have the Astros been messing with his mechanics, or is this just a bump in the road?

Pitching
Bad start for Folty. He had looked good his last couple of outings.
Happ had another eh start for OKC. He looks like he needs a little more time to work on things which means that I would guess we would get a few more starts out of Henry Sosa.
Glad to see Hallock give a good performance for the Astros org in the all star game.
Francis Ramirez was not as dominant as he was in his debut for Greeneville, bit it was still a decent start.
Last but not least, congrats to Bogey.

That's what I was thinking.
But he did go from Low A to High A and he’s 19. I do wonder if they’re telling him to try to make more contact, figuring that the walk capability is already there, but yeah, I’d like to see more walks.
And I really, really don’t want them messing w/ his mechanics – they’re fine the way they are.
Overall ugly day on the farm. Mier looks pretty bad for the 21st overall pick, Kvasnicka looks like crap, and Folty can’t stay consistent -8 ER? Sigh…

Singleton has been in High-A all season. This is a very small sample size, so don’t worry about the differences in his numbers. All, players need adjustments in their mechanics in the minors. Even all-star caliber players have to make adjustments in their mechanics throughout the season.
Do not worry with Folty’s numbers. Cold weather guys take longer to develop. Scouting reports are strong, so don’t fret.
Folty
I’ll trust you Subber. If you say Folty will take longer to adjust because of being a cold weather guy then I believe you. He actually hasn’t pitched that bad this year, but I think we just had really high expectations for him to hit the ground running like Lyles did when in reality not very many do that.
As far as Folty goes though, how long can we keep using the disclaimer that Folty is a cold weather pitcher. Basically, how long would you guess would be a reasonable time to adjust. The biggest thing that I have looked at is that his velocity is still there, so he should be okay, but I was just wondering.
by conroestro on Aug 17, 2011 10:08 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Really kind of depends on his development path which is going to be dependant how much he develops in the off-season. We could start seeing him put up the big numbers next season, or he could never develop at all. Theres no real timeline for it besides, they typically realize potential later than warm weather pitchers.
Gotcha. That’s what I was wondering.
by conroestro on Aug 17, 2011 10:24 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Interesting that Folty has a bad game after Footer wrote such a glowing story about him at Astros.com. It was nice to see such positive quotes from his pitching coach, Borkowski, and his manager.

Mier looked bad as the 21st overall pick? I can’t remember what pick the Astros had that year, but I know they took him before the 21st pick.

I think anyways. Maybe I’m wrong.
by conroestro on Aug 17, 2011 10:04 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Oops my bad. Didn’t know we did that good in 09.
Sorry Yohann. Didn’t mean to doubt you.
by conroestro on Aug 17, 2011 10:09 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
No worries.
I know Mier is still very young, but I’d like to see him start to hit just a bit more. If he ends the year under the mendoza line at Lancaster of all places, that’s not good. He’s still walking though, some, so that’s good. There is hope for him still.
On a positive note DDJ had a good day.
Subber, just curious, a cold weather pitcher is where they grew up? In the East usually? Why do they take longer to develop?

they have a limit on how much baseball they can play.

Exactly. Because of the cold, their seasons begin a lot later that what we’re used to so they lack the experience and polish that most players do at their age. They’ve pitched significantly less than southern boys. The fact that he’s pitching as well as he is, his stuff is as good as it is, and that he has good pitchability is very impressive given his background.
Lancaster doesn’t help overall averages much if anything. You still have to put the ball where they aren’t. Lancaster helps power numbers.
Thats what I figured about cold weather pitchers
Just wanted to make sure. Thanks.
Jio has 1 Hr in Lancaster -would like to see more and a 20/45 bb/k ratio… He’s still just 20 though.

Anderson Hernandez...
as awful of a shortstop as he is, he made two fantastic plays last night. One in the hole behind third base with a jump throw to first, and the other a stab up the middle behind second base. It was the opposite of what we’ve seen from him since Manzella was DFA’d. Happ didn’t look very good and Hernandez helped save him a couple of times. In the first inning, though, Wallace dropped a throw to first for an error, which was followed by a throw into RF by Navarro, but it was a miscommunication between Vallejo and Hernandez that led to the error. The throw was on the bag, but nobody was covering. Back-to-back errors was a really ugly way to start the game.
Even worse, Happ was picked off third base to end a scoring threat early in the game. Runners on the corners and Locke drew a walk…Happ was almost halfway down the baseline and was a dead duck going back to third. He seemed very checked out, and from what I’ve heard he may be the most disgruntled of the three most recent demotees (CJ/Wallace/Happ).

I'm done saying bad things about Kvasnicka
I’ve been one of his biggest boo-birds, but the guy is among the league leaders in doubles. So there is actually some power potential there. I was convinced he had no projectable tools, but there is some underlying power in those numbers one day, I hope.
bogey in the lineup today
Schuck
Altuve
JD
Downs 1b
Paredes
Bogey
Barmes

I really want Schafer to come back though. Shuck does not impress me much besides his OBP skills.

Hard Slotting in 2012?
Is it true that there is a significant chance for hard-slotting in next year’s draft? Teams were certainly spending this year like that was the case.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 17, 2011 10:46 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Gee I hope we can get this sale done
Or else we won’t be able to pay our #1 pick next year.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
That is literally my biggest fear regarding the sale of the team: the deal falling through, and Drayton going cheap and drafting a Matt Bush over a Justin Verlander.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 17, 2011 11:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
That is my fear too.
I think we really lucked out this year in that Armstrong nor Springer were signed for too much money. If they had demanded for more we probably would have lost them because Drayton wasn’t going to pay.
I really hope Crane gets approved.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
I’m undecided on whether hard slotting would be a good thing or a bad thing.

Shelby Miller indefinitely suspended by the Cardinals. That is a terrible development for one of the best pitching prospects in the game.
by clack on Aug 17, 2011 10:46 AM CDT reply actions 1 recs
I wouldn’t mind doing a challenge trade for him. I’m really high on him personally despite his lack of judgement sometimes. Something along the lines of miller for cosart and another piece maybe like the delmon young for bartlet and matt garza deal
by Astro Dave88 on Aug 17, 2011 11:01 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I would be all for that, but I doubt the Cardinals give him up. He is a phenomenal talent.
by Stupendous Man on Aug 17, 2011 11:05 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Wow
I went over to viva el birdos to read up on it, and it doesn’t look like the Cardinals are treating it as a big deal, and that it was for a violation of team policy. For what I could tell he got drunk in an apartment complex and got in a fight. The Cardinals say that the suspension will not be for that long, and that it also conveniently helps the Cardinals achieve the task of limiting his innings on the season. Sounds like the Cardinals are trying to send the young hurler a time to grow up wake up call more than anything else.

Jayson Stark thinks highly of Santana.
• While we’re talking Santanas — but not Johan — the Astros have a chance to hit big on outfielder Domingo Santana, the fourth piece they got as the player to be named later in the Hunter Pence deal. Santana was only hitting .269/.345/.434 at Class A Lakewood. But he was also seventh in the South Atlantic League in doubles (29). He just turned 19 this month. And scouts gush about his raw skills.
“This guy has a chance to be Vlad Guerrero,” one scout said. “He’s still crude right now. But he has the highest ceiling imaginable. You put him in there with the other guys they got, and this has a chance to be like the [Bartolo] Colon deal was for Cleveland.” To refresh your memory, the Indians got back Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips — whoever they are — when they shipped Colon to Montreal in 2002.

makes you wonder
I’m sure Lyles, Altuve, Paredes, JD Martinez won’t be considered rookies after the amount of time they’ll have played this year, but kinda makes you wonder: if BA is saying, as is, right now our farm system is between 15-20… where it could’ve been if our major league team didn’t suck so bad that we had to call up some of these guys fairly early.
by GhostOfGlennDavis on Aug 17, 2011 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions
I just meant minor leaguers by these guys. It’s a review of his pre season top 20:
Houston Astros Top 20 Prospects for 2011
1) Jordan Lyles, RHP, Grade B+: He won’t be a superstar, but he’ll soak innings and throw strikes.
2) Delino DeShields, 2B, Grade B-: If he turns out like his dad, the Astros will be happy. Grade can/should rise once he gets more experience.
3) Mike Foltynewicz, RHP, Grade B-: One of my favorite high school pitchers from the 2010 draft.
4) Austin Wates, OF, Grade B-: I think this guy is underrated. Should hit for average, get on base, and provide steals.
5) J.D. Martinez, OF, Grade B-: Steal from the 2009 draft, has decent tools, knows how to hit, but was just a 20th round pick.
6) Tanner Bushue, RHP, Grade C+: Erratic in the Sally League, but still young and projectable.
7) Aneury Rodriguez, RHP, Grade C+: You know your system is thin when a Rule 5 guy gets into the Top 10. But he has a good arm and should be able to help this year.
8) Mark Melancon, RHP, Grade C+: Like Rodriguez, he’s ready to help now. If he throws enough strikes, he could close eventually.
9) Jonathan Villar, SS, Grade C+: Would rank higher on pure tools, but I have significant worries about his bat.
10) Jimmy Paredes, 2B, Grade C+: Like Villar, he came over in a trade, he’s got the tools, but I’m not sure he’ll hit.
11) Mike Kvasnicka, 3B-C-OF, Grade C+: I don’t think the NY-P numbers reflect his bat fairly, but what position does he play?
12) Jiovanni Mier, SS, Grade C+: One of the big disappointments of the 2010 season. Young enough to rebound.
13) Jose Altuve, 2B, Grade C: You have to love the numbers, but can a 5-5 player really succeed at higher levels? We’ll find out this year.
14) Dallas Keuchel, LHP, Grade C: Throws strikes, gets ground balls, could surprise as fifth starter type.
15) Jay Austin, OF, Grade C: Great tools, but I doubt the bat.
16) Ariel Ovando, OF, Grade C: Great tools, power, cost a lot of money, but hasn’t played in the US yet and I am cautious about such players until we get real data.
17) Douglas Arguello, LHP, Grade C: Older prospect that you won’t see on other lists, but he throws strikes, gets grounders, and could sneak into major league role this year.
18) Brian Bogusevic, OF, Grade C: Perfect fit as a reserve outfielder. Won’t hit for average, but can do everything else decently.
19) Telvin Nash, 1B-OF, Grade C: Excellent power potential but lacks other skills.
20) Carlos Quevedo, RHP, Grade C: Strike-thrower had good year in the New York-Penn League, though doesn’t fan a lot of people.
OTHERS: Jose Cisenro, RHP; Koby Clemens, 1B; Bobby Doran, RHP; Jon Gaston, OF; Jake Goebbert, OF; Ben Heath, C; Roberto Pena, C; Lance Pendleton, RHP; Rodney Quintero, RHP; James Robinson, RHP; Ross Seaton, RHP; Tommy Shirley, LHP; J.B. Shuck, OF; Pat Urckfitz, LHP; Vincent Velasquez, RHP.
The problems with the Houston farm system are well-documented, and most of the blame lies with cheapskate ownership. The situation has improved over the last couple of years, with an influx of projectable arms like Lyles, Folty, and Bushue giving some hope for the future pitching staff. Physical tools are the emphasis on the hitting side, although the results so far with players like Austin aren’t too impressive. Trades this past summer brought in high-ceiling infielders Villar and Paredes, but I’m not sure either of them will hit enough to live up to expectations. The signing of Ovando is a good marker for the future of the system, even if he doesn’t pan out himself.
Overall, things are still very thin, but there are signs of improvement.
Our preseason 2013 top 10 prospect list could be sick...
assuming guys like villar, and others are up, and assuming we get another at least top 5 or 10 pick next year, we could be stacked in the farm at the beginning of 2013…and that’s also after Myers/Wandy are deal which should bring 2+decent spects…

Sorry I did these from my cell so it waste hard to hyperlink, but those are to interesting reads for anyone who has spare time. The Camden depot thing talks about comparing draft and overshot versus international free agents. Basically what I got out of it was that 3rdthe round talent taken in the third round costs about 400k. Third round talent taken in the later rounds cost you about 600k. Third round talent in the IFA costs about 570k. Interesting stuff. So is the fangraphs article as well.

I wouldn't go that far.
It’s just one HR. But damn it, I still like Bogey and I’m pulling for him.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Yeah, I mean
Perhaps he can be the stopgap next year if they don’t want to sign a free agent (avoiding which I think would be wise)… it’s probably between him, Bourg, Shuck, and Goebbert if I guess correctly. With some combination of Bourg, Shuck, Schafer penciled in for CF.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
The grand slam was great, but I am still skeptical that Bogusevic is suited for more than a platoon/bench role in the long term. Bogusevic’s extreme groundball rate at all levels, including the majors, will tend to limit his HR potential—and you would like to see power out of the corner OF positions. That said, though, I wouldn’t have a problem giving Bogusevic most of the playing time in RF, because the alternatives aren’t very good. Neither Bourgeois or Shuck have much power, and Bogey could well be better than either of them.
