There's a great write up on the trade posted on the Crawfish boxes. Read it before this, but there is something that nobody has talked about. What is the direction of the Astros
with the new owner.
Yesterday we saw the direction. If you think Wade acted alone on the trades you are missing the point. It wasn't Mclane either pulling the strings. I'm sure Crane met with Mclane and Wade to talk about a blueprint for the futre and how he saw things going forward.
Here's the clues: He said he was going to build this team through drafting and the minor leagues. Second dropping payroll to 60 million. Third the trades that happened last week, and probably the trades coming this month with Wandy and whoever else goes through the waiver process.
But there is a bigger picture that is not being talked about. Yes we brought in 10 future prospects, but we also made the team much less expensive and have brought the payroll way down. This is important because....
If we are going to be loosing over the next 2-3 seasons, we are going to have a high draft pick. Those picks are very expensive. Let's say we are in the top 5 picks for 3 years. That will be a huge part of the budget. Also, we are going to spend on the international market. If we want to bring in good players that's going to be expensive.
Ed Wade clearly said that we are rebuilding and going to make the team good for a long time. If that's true and we are aiming for a team to really start being productive around 2014, then we are going to have to get very serious on spending on the draft, and the international scene, and on scouts.
There is another change of philosphy happening as well that we are pushing people through the minor leagues faster. This is a new concept for the Astros. We havn't had truelly talented players in abundance for a long time in the minors. We've had a bunch of lifers down there. Note to our current AAA.
For all of the belly aching we've had as fans for a few years, they are finally doing it the right way. We might even have to get used to the idea, that the Pence and Bourn trades might become the way of the future as well just like the Rays
do, so we are continually stocking the minors. Anybody count how many picks the Rays had in the 1st round of the draft last year. It was 9.
Thats how you build a championship team.
This is going to be a unique process going forward and the ownership is going to need to do a great job in educating the fan base in this city if we are going to be a baseball town.
The best thing we could do as fans is encourage this young team into believing they are stars. We need to be like the cardinals or Red Sox
fans and love our team through thick and thin and believe in these young guys. It's going to be a long road.
Btw... all these teams like the phillies etc pouring all their money into expensive players and emptying their minor leagues right now is great for our future. We are the next wave in baseball.
