Astros Minor League Recap
Well the trade deadline has came and passed and we now have a total of nine new minor leaguers (if you count the Keppinger trade). With those trades, we've had a ton of movement between the majors and minors, so lets recap!
Corpus to Houston-Jimmy Paredes, JD Martinez, Jose Altuve
Oklahoma City to Houston-Brian Bogusevic, Luis Durango
Houston to Oklahoma City-Chris Johnson, Brett Wallace
Now, that's just at the major league level. There is going to be a lot more movement as theses minor leaguers begin to filter in to their minor league clubs. The big are where we will likely see a ton of movement is Corpus Christi with the pitching situation. As it stands right now, there are seven starters; Dallas Keuchel, Henry Sosa, Erick Abreu, Ross Seaton, Jonnathan Aristil, Paul Clemens, and Brett Oberholtzer. Plus, the Astros have said that Zach Cosart will also go to Corpus, which sends that group to eight.
Here is what I think is going to happen with some of these guys. I think at least one, if not both, of Keuchel and Sosa will get moved to Oklahoma City pushing Brad Hennessey to the pen, since there are only four starters right now (Wright is spot starting). I then think Erick Abreu or Aristil will be pushed to the pen. There is bound to be some relievers being pushed to Lancaster or Oklahoma City, and I have to think somebody is going to be released between the three levels.

I watched Folty’s start on milb.tv, and it was like you said. Solid but otherwise unimpressive. Of his three strikeouts two of them were looking. Its hard to tell on milb.tv, but it looked like he just threw a fastball, curveball, and no change, or if he did throw a change it wasn’t often. When the announcers spoke of velocity they mentioned 92. They also said he threw 92 in his last inning as well, so it looks like he can sustain his velocity throughout the game.

Why did we take him over Walker, Biddle and Ranuando again?
Oh thats right cause he would sign for slot.

I’m not a fan of ranaudo, I honestly don’t think he’ll make it as a starter. We would have been laughed at for going over drafting biddle there. Biddle was projected to be supplemental/2nd round. Walker was a big signability risk. I love the folty pick still. His ceiling is higher than biddle, just will take more time to develop.

I know.
Im just very impatient. I hope he has a similar path as Jake Orodizzi.

Allegedly the Red Sox were considering drafting Folty with pick #20 if we hadn’t taken him at #19.

True, I completely forgot Singleton was at Lexington.
Despite having no power Shuck is still an interesting player.
Didnt even see the 2 HR for Castro.

Rotations
AAA- Sosa, Keuchel, AVH, Harell, Figgy.
AA- Cosart, Clemens, Oberholtzer, Seaton, Aristil
Did Sergio Perez get released? That’d be a shame, if they kept guys like Hennessey and Fein. Anxious to see how CJ and Wally react to their demotions. Hope Wallace goes Chris Davis down there. Good bullpen arms in Wright/Gervacio/Storey.
Looks like Gaston may be turning it on. Hopefully he makes the most of this last month. In addition to the solid rotation and prospect laden lineup, the CC bullpen is STRONG. Hicks, Zeid, King, Leon, Stoffel, Meszaros, and Urckfitz all have a good shot to end up in Houston eventually.
If Erik Castro could stay healthy, he may be a strong sleeper candidate. ‘stros’ farm is stacked at 1B now (Wallace, Hinze, Singleton, Nash).
Not pleased with Folty’s K rate, but good to see him limit the hits and runs. If he can end the year with an ERA under 4, a K/9 rate of 6+, and a WHIP of <1.40, I’d call his year a success. Ben Orloff keeps hitting.
I dread looking at Tri-Cities’ box scores.
Ovando has cooled, but he’s still doing well enough to justify a promo to full-season next year.
Good crop of infielders in the GCL.
Those W/L records are ugly.
Castro is a 3B who had shoulder surgery, I believe, last year.
Hoepfully he moves back across the diamond in 2012.

Shuck is getting screwed this time around
He’s a better prospect than Bogusevic. He reminds me of what John Cangelosi gave the Astros in 1995-1996. His near 2 to 1 BB/K ratio is outstanding. If anything he should be there over Michaels.
All things equal, give me guys that have some speed and legit OBP skills.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 10:54 AM CDT reply actions 2 recs
The thing about Shuck
Is he has absolutely zero power, and his defense just isn’t that great. I’m not saying he wouldn’t be better than Bogey or Michaels, but none of the three strikes me as a good option to start every day in right field.
Actually I’d probably rather the Astros had called up Jacob Goebbert instead of Jimmy Paredes, and let CJ continue slogging away at third base. Goebbert is a pretty polished hitter and a good defender for a corner outfielder. He doesn’t have that much pop but still a lot more than Shuck.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
or DeLome
who has showed improved plate discipline in AAA this year.
Plus both guys are lefties.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, DeLome would make a bit of sense
I actually think Goebbert might be more ML-ready though, just because his hit tool is a lot better than DeLome’s. I also think Goebbert has a bit more upside, and I’d rather use those plate appearances on the best player possible.
I suspect the real reason they’re using Bogey/Michaels is because when Schafer comes back, he will man center field every day, and they’re going to use RF to take a look at Bourgeois and see what he can do with substantial playing time.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
They better give Bourgeois sustained playing time, because he has definitely earned it.
If Mills plays Jason Michaels gets regular playing time, we better find a new manager.

Well he should play until he gets hurt, because he deserves it.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions
With Durango and Bogey coming up I really dont see room for JMike
Not at the rate of this youth movement
My first post about Shuck/Bogusevic is at the bottom of the page,
but I’ll weigh in on DeLome too. He hasn’t shown much pop, especially when compare this season to his numbers at the lower minor league levels. The patience and improved OBP is huge, and I would think the power will catch up next season.
He’d probably hold his own in the big leagues, but I would call up both Bogusevic and Shuck ahead of him. That said, Durango can not (and will not) hit major league pitching. He can fly, but he’s going to look silly at the plate in the bigs.
Agreed
I’m not making the judgment on his ML numbers. I’m basing them on watching him in AAA. I work for OKC, so I see him play quite a bit. He can barely hit AAA pitching.
In fact, he didn’t start for three straight games over the weekend. He attempts drag bunts at least once every five at-bats, and I’ve seen him try (and fail) to chop the ball over the third baseman’s head quite a few times as well. He’s one of the fastest players I’ve ever seen in my life, and he plays decent defense with a good arm for his size. But he can’t hit. Best case is probably an Endy Chavez-type player.
For right now with this ML team thats fine. He's also still young enough to
improve his hitting a la Bourn when he came over. How are his BS skills?
Pretty much, yeah.
But with less solid contact ability and more speed, I think. Better arm defensively.
He basically takes off everytime he's on first.
He has unbelievable speed, but he doesn’t appear to get great jumps. Just look at his numbers…he was just 13-20 on SB attempts in OKC. He needs to learn when to go and who to run on. The potential for 50+ steals is definitely there, though.
No I know it is what it is
But the way this team is looking like a bunch of slap hitters. I at the least want a guy that can accidentally hit a HR
If Luis Durango hits a ML HR....
this year (or ever, probably), then I’ll jump off a cliff. He stretches singles into doubles, but he doesn’t have enough gap power to hit doubles to stretch into triples. He has 25 doubles in his minor league career. Seven seasons.
Here is a fangraphs’ article on Durango when he was called up by the Padres last year. The article refers to Durango as a clone of Tony Gwynn, Jr. (whom he happened to be replacing). Though it’s a fantasy article, it’s somewhat positive.

Does anyone think that Paredes
could be a poor man’s Howard Johnson?
Switch hitting 3B. I don’t think Paredes has Johnson’s plate discipline or raw power, but he will easily exceed him on the base paths and in the field.
CJ is going no where fast so lets hope Paredes gets off to a hot start and that can be the catalyst for him.
If anything for Paredes this time up in Houston will give him acclimated to ML pitching in
preparation for next season.
His ugly defense will send him back to the minors soon enough. His bat is decent, but nothing special. He does have great speed tho, and can take the extra base or steal a base for you. He’s still a year or two away.
His defense is not that bad considering he was moved to third roughly two months ago.
His bat is better than what his numbers indicate but is still very raw all around especially when you take into account he’s only 22.
Where the hell has Villar's power surge come from?
Hitting a lot of homeruns as of late.
"Hakeem couldn't kick your ass cuz you were too
close kissin his!"- Sir Charles to Kenny Smith.
Same with Martinez
Maybe they both made the adjustments to add a little more loft to their swings.
Both are big guys, and they always say power is the last thing to come.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions
What exactly have you read that indicates this?
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions
Hooks Mgr. Tom Lawless and Astros wanted JD to put more loft to his swing and he did
just that. Villar they worked on his weight transfer and leg kick when hitting and it has led to his increase in not only power but BA and OB numbers.
Everyone ok with Wallace and CJ being sent down?
I don’t know what to think about it…
the man, the myth, the legend.
Twitter: @jyarbrough
CJ was coming along, but this is probably not the worse thing ever. You slow down CJ’s arbitration clock and allow Wallace to work on his mechanics without facing big league pitching.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions
I'd be mildly surprised if CJ gets another shot in the majors
I suppose it’s possible, but since he was never a good prospect in the first place and is already 26, I think he may have just used up his chance. It’s a shame because he seems like a good guy and has real raw power , but the flaws in his pitch recognition and fielding are too great.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
He is terrible at pitch recognition.
Being 26 on such a young team now will hurt him, no doubt.
Hopefully he tears the cover off the ball at OKC and makes Wade bring him back to Houston. I’m curious how much longer Wade will have a job though.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions
Chris Johnson is not a MLB everyday 3B
bad defense and poor plate discipline make for an below average player. He can mash the fastball, but once pitchers figured that out he was done.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions
It most certaintly is a major problem.
It’s not his only problem. If he was a above average defender he would still be in Houston. You can have either one, but when you have neither don’t expect to play in the majors.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions
Goes like this for me:
CJ – Don’t really care either way, guess I’d rather see Downs playing third base.
Wallace – Torn. Not sure it’s best for him to be at AAA right now, but I can understand the decision.
Paredes – Should not be in the majors. Better to have CJ playing every day than rush prospects with legit tools who need a lot more polish.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
I’m don’t necessarily agree with the Paredes move either, but maybe the coaching staff at Corpus saw something that really impressed them. He is already on the 40 man roster too.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions
Paredes
Maybe Paredes sees the opportunity he has and works as hard as he possibly can to seize this opportunity. He should be like a sponge and listen to every piece of advice Barnett and Dave Clark has to offer. It would be nice if veteran guys (Bourn or Pence) could mentor him, but it looks like Carlos Lee and Barmes will have to do. The point is that realistically Paredes was two years away, and was given a shot now. Hopefully he realizes that if he can work hard and seize the opportunity then maybe he can realize his dream sooner. If he falters then it could be awhile before he gets another chance. If he smart then he’s the hardest worker out there the rest of the year. He should feel rejuvenated.
I will just say not a fan of the move but trying to look at the brightside here.
by conroestro on Aug 1, 2011 11:37 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Whether or not he's ready is not the issue
The issue is that the Astros feel, and probably rightly so, that Chris Johnson has earned the right to stay in Houston.
Since the Astros literally have no one in AAA or the majors that have a case to say I deserve to be the everyday 3B, then you go to next guy down the list. That guy happens to be Paredes. Who at 22 is at the age where if he’s worth a damn will so it in the majors.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions
Chris Johnson hasn't earned the right.

CJ's offense is a real problem
It’s non-existant.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Guys that hit .240 with little power and even worse plate discipline
shouldn’t expect to play in the majors for long.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah someone said that he had more plate discipline than Paredes
I dont think CJ has any plate discipline personally
Wallace's demotion came a year too late.
CJ? That’s a tough one because the Astros don’t exactly have a capable guy to put there every day anywhere in the system, from what I can tell (Paredes is the closest, though).
E-5-1-50
What does
Sutil or Wikoff look like? Are they any farther along than Paredes? You could have brought up Manzo to play 3B
Not sure...
But the fact that they keep putting middle infielders at 3B shows just how thin the Astros are at the position.
E-5-1-50
Good defenders, but not enough offense for third base
Although actually, I suspect Wikoff’s current game would translate better to the majors than Paredes.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
The Paredes move seems desperately crazy, doesn’t it?
by MadMartygan on Aug 1, 2011 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
We just overall dont have enough offensive players
So if we bring up a lot of young pitchers next year would rather have someone that is plus defensive 3B man.
Not enough offense
is an understatement.
In AA he has a .266 batting average and a good BABIP… his walk rate is under 4% his strikeout rate is over 20% and his OBP is sub .300… those are bad numbers for the minors not good numbers.
How in hades does anyone expect him to hit major league pitching… he is two years away at least and while he is athletic he needs a lot of work on his defense in general and his work at third base in specific.
We all know that Wade took a shot in the dark and is trying to save his job
He doesnt give a shit if he ruins this guy or not. Same thing Mills with sitting Wallace so much
With much better plate discipline
Keppinger has little to no power so really give me the guy with better defense and OBP skills.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Same here. Wikoff's has an excellent glove in comparison to Keppeinger.
It always seems to make some sort of wicked stop no matter where he is playing in the IF.
Wallace was killing it in AAA before we got him
I dont have a problem with Wallace being on the Astros I dont think he was rushed. What I do have a problem with was how he was treated when he started to struggle. Mills might have ruined him as a ML player
by Nado2036 on Aug 1, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Or Wallace
didn’t take to instruction well, and didn’t make the adjustements necessary to play everyday in the majors. When you are in the majors, it’s your job to stay there, and take instruction. It’s quite obvious that Wallace did neither.
by Neil Leininger on Aug 1, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions
It could also be that Wallace and Barnett/Mills just did not mesh together well.
You also have to consider that Wallace has been bounced around so much inis short pro career he may have become a bit jaded when Mills (dumbass) began benching him in favor of Lee who wasnt really hitting well at the time.
by StrosSouth on Aug 1, 2011 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Lets all hope he does. Im thinking that Wallace just lost his confidence when
he started getting replaced by the then light hitting Lee.
There have been some rumors that Wallace didn’t take well to adjustments suggested by his coaches. Those mostly were of the internet rumor variety, so I didn’t want to mention them in the past. Someone at SnS said over the off-season that Wallace was resistent to Bagwell’s coaching. I have seen similar comments pop up this season, but I don’t know if they are true. After they were sent to AAA, Wade made (what seemed to me) to be a pointed reference to the Astros’ expectation that CJ and Wallace would make adjustments at the ML level. Maybe that lends some truth to the rumors.

by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I dont completely understand the waiver wire thing but if someone picks him up on waivers I wonder if we can get rid of him
Well one the waiver wire, a team can choose to take the player from the team they were on, while taking their entire remaining contract.
When you pass a player over waivers, if a team is interested, the team who initially passed him through waivers can take the player back off waivers.
Alex Rios was put on waivers and the Chi Sox took his contract with a bunch of years remaining.
Was huge for Toronto because they were losing alot and in a presumed rebuilding mode

Close to Rosenberg, but also close to Katy/Sugar Land.
I played softball at those TX instruments fields for awhile. Those leagues weren’t very serious though.
Ok
Here is the link
http://www.teampages.com/organizations/629
I played that marathon game a couple weeks ago
I play on the 30+ with Cardinals and sometimes on the Zephyrs open woodbat in North. When my wife lets me play on the weekends
I made the coach on the Cardinals buy my jersey because there is no way I was going to spend my money on anything from St Loues
Cool
Just know that some guys are still looking to play and softball is painfull to play especially if you have played at the higher levels.
Why is it painful to play? Just curious, I would rather play baseball.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions
For one I cant hit the ball for shit because it is so slow and when I do I launch it and if you hit to many HR’s they start counting as outs. The other is that when you throw the ball the leagues I have played in alot of guys get out of the way. Also hate playing with someone that cant bend over to field the ball.
LOL definitely feel you on that.
It would be an adjustment period for me seeing live pitching, but i can adjust.
What is the fastest velocity you have seen someone out there throw?
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions
There is a lefty that got released by the A’s in the wood bat league throwing around 90. He is coming off an injury and is pretty nasty just lacks control. Fastest in 30 plus 85-88 but most of those guys are on our team.
That is pretty good. The fastest I’ve ever hit was 80-85.
90 without control sounds dangerous lol
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions
It is
I have seen Mid 90’s but it has been about 5 yrs. Got nailed by low 90’s in the head from a guy from UT. Concussion had to miss a week
Never got knocked out in football
Happened 3 times in baseball and took a line drive to the wrist at 3B. Guy pulled back his bunt and tried to catch it but got my wrist instead of glove
The top 6 look great to me
And even with that list you still have surprises that could be huge in Hinze and Cisnero.

Thought this was interesting
I talked with some respected posters on MinorLeagueBall last night and this morning about Folty’s start (they watched it on MilB.TV). I’ll quote what they had to say:
Foltynewicz did have an impressive outing. The announcers only noted his exact velocity twice, once in the first and once in the sixth, but he was clocked at 92 mph both times. He has a very slight build at the moment with a lot of room to fill out, although his delivery made me wonder a little if projection was going to offer him more velocity rather than more movement. He exhibited good sense for pitching with his fastball, with feel for commanding it around the plate while keeping it down in the zone. His primary fastball, as you probably know, is a sinker and it’s a plus pitch that should help him project well to higher levels. There’s the makings of a solid curveball here, with good break, and I thought it had above-average potential as he gets stronger. He flashed a changeup, which is raw but looks like an offering with decent potential, and a slider, which didn’t do too much for me. Very nice package overall, kind of similar to Chris Volstad a few years ago, although 19 year old Volstad was much more developed than Folty is.
-mrkupe
Agree on all with Folty – wrote that up in my excel file, but thought the CB flashed plus, actually 50/65.
-JD Sussman
So apparently his start impressed some people.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
That is great to hear. Chris Volstad was a pretty quick riser through the minors, so that is a pretty compelling comparison.
I always thought his curveball would end up above average to even possibly a plus pitch.
Honestly, I would rather him sit at 92 and work on movement more than building velocity.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Aug 1, 2011 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Love sinkerball pitchers
and with his breaking pitches coming along I stand by my belief that he was a better draft pick than DeShields. Just like I feel Armstrong this season was a better pick that Springer.
Well since we dont have to worry about Paying Bourn or Pence next year
We need to just throw money at armstrong. I mean make it rain
Hey guys, new to the site....
I’m a big Twins fan and over at TT all the time, but I work for the OKC RedHawks and have been in OKC since January. I have to watch the RedHawks nightly, and honestly, its painful. I thought I’d weigh in on some of the Bogusevic vs. Shuck talk.
Shuck is a very good lead-off man or two hitter at the AAA level, mainly due to his amazing OBP and the fact that he essentially never strikes out. Unfortunately, he has zero power…barely even gap power. He only has 9 doubles this year at OKC, but part of that is he’s legged out 7 triples. Still…a .370 SLG% in AAA is nothing to write home about.
Bogusevic will be a good 4th outfielder/1B at the major league level, with his combo of decent power, decent speed and decent defense. He also walks at a high rate, but he doesn’t drive the ball as often as he should. Honestly, both guys are 4th outfielders, but if we didn’t have Shuck in AAA….I don’t even want to think about it.
If you guys have any questions about how the AAA guys look, let me know. Harrell has looked very, very good in his first few starts. He pitches tonight. My favorite position player has been Barnes…he’s going to have a good big league career.
Welcome! Since you offered, I have some ?s:
-What is it about Barnes that you like?
-What are your thoughts on DeLome?
-Why are guys like Hennessey, Fein, and Wolf on the roster?
-What will happen to Clemens now that Wallace is there?
Thanks! With Wally and CJ now in OKC and the likely pending promotions of a couple pitchers from AA, they should at least be more fun to watch.
by Snake Diggity on Aug 1, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions
-What is it about Barnes that you like?
If Barnes can improve on his contact rate and continue to improve his plate patience, he’s basically a five-tool player. Being a Twins fan, he reminds me a lot of Joe Benson (the #4-5 prospect in the Twins system, currently at AA New Britain). He’s a big guy with very good speed, good pop, and a strong arm in the OF. He was going to play college football (like Benson), and absolutely crushes the ball when he gets ahold of one. He hit just .197 this year at OKC, but his SLG% was .402. The best way to describe him is that he has a relatively high ceiling (especially compared to guys like Shuck, Bogusevic, DeLome, etc.), and he didn’t concentrate fully on baseball until later than most. He’s still only 25 years old, and if he cuts back on his strikeouts, look out.
-What are your thoughts on DeLome?
I posted a little about DeLome above, so I’ll pretty much copy and paste…He hasn’t shown as much pop as you would hope, especially when comparing this season to his numbers at the lower minor league levels. The patience and improved OBP is huge, and I would think the power will catch up next season. He’d probably hold his own in the big leagues, but I would call up both Bogusevic and Shuck ahead of him right now. I could see him being a .240/.340/.440 corner outfielder. A borderline everyday player with marginal speed and defense. There just isn’t anything that sticks out about him…he doesn’t really do anything very well, just average.
-Why are guys like Hennessey, Fein, and Wolf on the roster?
Your guess is as good as mine. A little birdy told me Hennessey may be getting the axe any day now, and he should. He was absolutely shelled yesterday. His fastball was consistently 87-88, and I don’t think he touched 89 too often. Fein is bad, and Wolf started the year out very good but has been atrocious since. Your standard AAAA players that are roster-fillers at AAA.
-What will happen to Clemens now that Wallace is there?
Per week, I would say that Clemens plays 3B twice, 1B two-three times, and DHs maybe once. He’s lost some time now that Towles is here and Cancel plays some 1B, and for some reason we’re running Navarro out there at 3B 5-6x per week. Clemens has played some games in LF and looked decent (better than at 3B, for sure). I would look to see a lot of an OF of Clemens/Shuck/Delome, with Drew Locke losing time. Or at least, let’s hope so. Locke does nothing for me. Clemens needs the PT, and he’s looked awful at 3B.
Awesome insight man, thanks! Come back often.

Erik Castro-Jimmy Van O
Castro seems like he’s making a strong case for a look in Spring Training. Given the lack of options at 3B, Id be very intrigued to see what he has to offer.
VanO has just hit too much to not consider him somewhat of a prospect. Just from the recaps it looks like his average should be around .465! I know he’s probably a high two’s or low three’s guy but I’d like to see what he has at AAA.
by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 1, 2011 1:50 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
VanOstrand has been at AA level for two plus seasons and with the fact that he's about to
turn 27 he had BETTER be hitting AA pitching or he should be flat out released.
But he IS hitting...
If he can do this at AAA a september call up is not out of the question. We could use all the OBP guys we can get.
by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 1, 2011 2:22 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Considering hes beating up on AA pitching and being WAY too old for AA I have the
feeling you pit him against AAA or ML pitching that he will fall flat on his ass.
What do we lose by putting him in AAA?
Koby Clemens has failed this year. Miserably. Replacing him with a guy that has done well is the logical choice.

by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 1, 2011 2:32 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I think you could make an argument for Hinze at the back end of the top 10
Last I checked he has the third highest OPS in the Texas League (minumum 70 plate appearances). It’s a small sample, but it suggests that his success at Lancaster was not simply a mirage. I like his chances as much as Wates or Paredes at this point. Late bloomer?
by pacbellpilgrim on Aug 1, 2011 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions
That looks reasonable
I’d put Wates over Paredes, and monkey with the rankings a bit, but other than that, no complaints.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
I also like the balance
You’ve got your toolsy up the middle guys, your big corner bats, your high-ceiling starting pitchers, your near ML-ready inningseaters… little bit of everything. Only thing we don’t see is position players who profile as ML contributors in the near future, and that’s only because Ed has already called all of them up and then some (the "some" being Paredes).
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Not too mention that Ed
has acquired everyone of those guys in the last 2 years. As bad as he’s been giving out bad money to guys like Feliz, Hall, Hampton, and a few others he as acquired pretty much a whole new system since taking over in late 2007.
So I would rate him
C- in managing the 25 man roster, though has a lot do with McLance’s assinine decisions.
but he gets A- in rebuilding the minors.
That would have average out to around a B, while he has he draw backs, if Crane kept him I wouldn’t curse his name.

What pisses me off
These star players that we got were drafted in like the 8th round and what not. Why can’t we have that kind of luck (exclude JD)
by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 1, 2011 2:59 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Because we don't go overslot enough
And don’t have the same caliber scouting department the Phillies have.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Some of it is luck... but most of it is going overslott
players that have top three round talent drop every year because teams are afraid they cannot sign them. Often in the middle rounds someone will take a flier on one of them and the good organizations find a way to get them signed… as long as you are not giving a 20th rounder 1st round money MLB typically does not block over slot bonuses.
I was hoping new ownership would do this since we desperately need the help …. but it is looking like the new CBA will put an end to the practice.
I like this lineup more because it makess the game interesting
When you ask Carlos Lee what his favorite place to play is, and he anwsers with the words, anywhere with a Buffet. You know theirs a real problem.

Someone made the good point
Armstrong could go in the first round next year if he stays healthy, but he’s taking the risk of facing a hard slotting system. He could stand to lose a good bit of money if he doesn’t sign this year. Especially if he continues with the injuries

Since AAA is in no way trying to do anything but hold emergency call ups right now, they’ll try Johnson in LF. I’m telling you guys it could work nicely! Think about it, what do you need to play LF? Good speed, check. Strong arm, check PLUS. Capable of catching a fly ball, if he’s a pro baseball player I hope he can catch a fly ball. If he can get this hitting thing under control he could be a nice LF or maybe even RFer depending on how well he can read balls.
by Its Gonna Happen on Aug 1, 2011 7:12 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Trying Johnson in left could be his only chance
of making it to the majors again.
He is never going to be a good contact hitter or even have an average OBP… so he is not an every day option at any position. However he does have power, it is not enough to make up for his god awful defense at third base… but if he could be a decent left fielder (he does have a strong arm) then he could make a decent power guy off the bench … who can play Left and even 1st or 3rd in a pinch.
